Jeb Bush at Romney event: State and local response really matter

Tampa, Florida (CNN) - At a campaign stop kicking off a swing through Florida for Mitt Romney, the state's former governor Jeb Bush appeared to take a dig at all of the attention paid to the Obama administration's response to Superstorm Sandy.

"My experience in all this emergency response business is that it is the local level and the state level that really matters," Bush said to a crowd of supporters gathered in a Tampa airport hanger.

"That if they do their job right the federal government part works out pretty good," Bush continued.

Continuing the positive tone he set for his campaign at a storm relief event in Ohio Tuesday, Romney steered clear of his usual stump speech attacks on President Obama.

The GOP nominee called on his supporters to donate to the Red Cross, "if they have a dollar extra."

Romney campaign aides confirmed the Republican candidate made his own personal contribution to the charity on Monday. However, the campaign did not specify the amount of the donation.

In his remarks in Tampa, Romney attempted to tie the nation's response to Sandy to Election Day, saying voters should also "come together" to remove President Obama from office.

“Now people coming together is what’s also going to happen, I believe on November 7th," Romney said.

Joining Romney and Bush on the campaign trail was the state's popular U.S. Senator Marco Rubio. Sticking to what appears to be a concerted effort by the campaign to avoid negative rhetoric, Rubio told the crowd that the current state of the economy does not have to be "the new normal."

Rubio, your family needs you. Do not neglect your family for this clown! He will or will not be elected without you. There are more things important than supporting this fool with money. Remember Jesus was not rich but is more powerful than any man. He blessed you with a beautiful family! Rubio for president 2016!!

    Pander Bear
Obama and FEMA and by extension the Federal Government are looking very good regarding the response to Sandy.
    =====================================================================================
You are clueless. There has been no federal response yet as all response has been at the state and local level, as is the norm in these events. FEMA is designed to come in later. But as usual, the clueless lefties in here think the only solutions come from the federal government when that is FAR from the truth.

The GOP have lost their marbles. We are in serious trouble if we don't get the GOP out of office.

Is there some waste in government?Sure, but the GOP has tried to paint almost all spending by the federal government as necessary; and that's not true.JEB Bush is trying to help Romney with those remarks, but he should know first hand that you can't downplay FEMA's role in disasters.Romney said that states are better equipped to handle disasters, but they don't have the resources to do it, and would bankrupt their states with one serious incident.

Romney has no clue. He has no core, he has no sense of how we are all in this American Experience together and in America we always help those in need.

Here is a good example of how Romney has no clue. On the campaign trail Romney said

"every time you have an occasion to take something including disaster relief from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that's even better."

Are you kidding me. He wants to put the private sector in charge of disaster relief. This man has no moral compass.

He also said in response to federal aid regarding the deadly Joplin, Missouri, tornado, Romney said

"We cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all."

I guess Romney thinks that worrying about the future of our kids is more important than saving the lives of those same kids when a natural disaster strikes. As you can see, this man will put money ahead of anything. ANYTHING! Even helping those suffering and dying from natural disasters. Is this the kind of heartless President we deserve? I think not

At a recent campaign event in Ohio, Romney ignored questions by reporters on whether he supported the Federal Emergency Management Agency's role in disaster relief. I guess he doesn’t thing the average Americans deserve the help of the federal government but rich folks like him does.

Even guys like the outspoken Republican governor of New Jersey knows that the State or the Private Sector cannot provide the help that will be needed in an natural disaster and that is why Christie declared a state of emergency and seek federal help for widespread devastation. Cristie even said in an Interview Tuesday on NBC, Christie described Obama's response as "outstanding," and he told CNN that the president had been "incredibly supportive and helpful to our state."

The choice is clear. Do we want to go back to the exact same policies (Romney/Ryan current policies) that brought America (this great Nation) to its knees or do we want to continue to build on the recovery.

Here's where FEMA matters.....MONEY!!!! States organize and give the locale and input needed for resource and personnel and the federal grovernment the service and funds needed to help Americans!!! Therefore we need FEMA.

A Bush with a sense of humor since it was his party that forced many states to cut first responders.

Christie to GOP....................."I may be a Republican and am on your side, but I am sure as h... glad that Obama is president during this disaster, rather than Romney, because the state of New Jersey does not have the resources to "go it alone".

Coordinating with state and local agencies, the federal emergency management is a vital resource during national disasters.

Romney wants to get rid of FEMA, and Bush should know that's wrong from experience.

Jeb should keep his mouth shut....I have seen him take plenty of hand-outs from FEMA when hurricanes, storms, floods, etc struck FL during his term and he viewed the most affected sites with his own brother and others as presidents.

I think that we're all forgetting the fact that Obama also wants to reduce FEMA! But, of course, this is CNN and no one will ever report that.

I have a question for Jeb Bush:

If the state and the local level are overwhelmed with the huge magnitude of the disaster (as it happened during Katrina), where will they appeal the assistance from if not from federal? And why shouldn't the federal jump onto immediately to save lives and those who are suffering?

If I where Jeb Bush and I have aspirations to be a President He would have tone down rhetoric especially this topic. THE COUNTRY HAS EXPERIENCE THE WORST CASE ABOUT DISASTER AND ATTEMPTS OF FAILED RECOVERY IN HIS BROTHERS ADMINISTRATION AND THE EVIDENCE IS STILL BLATANT IN NEW ORLEANS. But on the other hand brains and logic are not the Bush's best features.

Wonder what W has to say about FEMA? I wish he would come out of hiding and agree with Romney so that we could put all this to rest and let all the victims of Hurricane Sandy take care of things themselves. Maybe the residents of New York can pump all that water out of the subway tunnels with buckets. It's not like they have anything else to do right now. – Sarcasm folks!

That same old GOP response, "Let the states take care of it". That's going to go over well with 9-10 states heavily impacted by Sandy. Anyone with half a brain knows the states could never do inividually what FEMA and the federal government do. It's justanother blatant attempt to inject right-wing politics into a disaster situation (overlooking the one they crreated during thier last 8-year term).

Very interesting coming from a Governor of a state in the path of every hurricane that comes through.
National Guard are always dispatched as well as police and fire immediately. I do recall that plans for the Sandy super storm last Wednesday, when the storm did not show up until Friday on the East Coast.

I am sure Jeb was thankful for all the FEMA money he received when governing Florida. Don't listen to what he is say, listen to what he is NOT saying: That we need to get rid of FEMA. I remember as gov of FL, Jeb had his brother sign those declarations of ER before you could blink an eye. Prez Bush was more than happy to and toured the damage with Jeb – Same as Obama. Signed, former Jeb Bush supporter.

the best thing that can happen to Gov Christie and Gov Jeb Bush is that Romney loses the election.....then they will the GOP frontrunners....althoug we believe Gov Christie is their best shot at regaining the White House....not Romeny...he's already lost....OBAMA 2012
