Romney uses welfare attack in new ad

(CNN) – Mitt Romney's campaign has brought back a widely-discredited welfare claim in a new television ad, one week before Election Day.

In the ad--which was unannounced by the campaign but posted Tuesday on Romney's YouTube site–the narrator lists the "gutting" of the work requirement in welfare as one of President Barack Obama's so-called failed policies in his first term.

Along with high unemployment and a rise in food stamps, the Romney ad paints Obama as a threat to future generations.

"We may have made it through President Obama's first term," the narrator concludes, as footage of children are featured on the screen. "It's our children who cannot afford a second."

The ad, "Can't Afford Another Term," attacks an Obama administration directive that allows individual states–which have received a waiver from the Health and Human Services Department–to experiment with changes to their federally-funded welfare-to-work programs.

The intent, according to the directive, is to "challenge states to engage in a new round of innovation that seeks to find more effective mechanisms for helping families succeed in employment." But it also requires a 20% increase in the number of people moving from welfare to work in exchange for more flexibility granted by the waiver.

When Romney released a string of ads making the welfare attack this summer, an independent and non-partisan fact-checking organization, PolitiFact, rated Romney's offensive as "Pants on Fire." And the Obama campaign, the White House and former President Bill Clinton, who signed the original legislation into law, all hit back against the Romney spots, saying the claims were false and misleading.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith responded Tuesday night to the latest ad.

"Mitt Romney's desperation has brought him back to his old welfare lie – showing once again that there's nothing he won't say to win this election," she said in a statement. "If the American people can't trust Mitt Romney's words in his campaign ads, how could they ever trust him with the presidency?"

When pressed about the welfare ads in September by CNN National Political Correspondent Jim Acosta, Romney defended his campaign's commercials, saying they've been "absolutely spot on."

"Anytime there's been anything that's amiss we correct it or remove it," Romney said in the interview.

Romney's campaign did not respond to requests for more information about the new ad. According to CNN's ad tracker Kantar Media CMAG, the commercial has already aired in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, and Virginia.

Jon, Romney is behind by 8 points in Wisconsin, according to the latest Marquette University Poll. This poll correctly predicted Scott Walker's winning margin in the Wisconsin recall election. According to RealClearPolitics poll of polls, Obama leads by 1 point in New Hampshire and ties Romney in Colorado. Romney does not have 271 electoral votes. It won't change on Election Day.

Why do ignorant fundiot nutters lie? Another ad from the right wing that merits the dreaded "liar liar pants on fire" status. Is there a reason Mittens needs to lie in his ads? Does Mittens think his version of a god is pleased to see these blatent lies being broadcast over and over?

Doesn't Romney know a large percent of his supporters are on welfare. Race baiting doesn't work anymore for intelligent hard working people. If Romney lies before he is elected just think what would happen if he is elected-Indicted and Impeached. Save Our Country Obama/Biden.

    @allequal
I agree with Four and the Door. Obama is not living up to his promises and he needs to be fired. Clinton worked with the other side to enact welfare reform and it was needed. WHY SHOULDN'T EVERYONE WHO CAN WORK HAVE TO WORK. Heaven knows there is plenty to do! Besides, YOU SIMPLY CAN NOT SPEND MONEY YOU DON'T HAVE. AND THIS NATION DOESN'T HAVE THE $ TO DO EVERYTHING AND TAKE CARE OF EVERYONE ANYMORE. EVERYONE NEEDS TO START TAKING SOME PERSONNAL RESPOSIBILITY.

    =======

Of course you agree with Four and the Door , you both work for Karl Rove , why else would you post here ?

I think America is showing it's true colors! We have not gotten over racism! They have hated the POTUS since day one! Romney has lied over and over. Regardless of Romney being proved a liar...people still will vote for him to get the black man out of office. What a shame!

It seems like Obama supporters are the ones who are desperate. The man has done a terrible job as President of this Country. Even Hillary and Bill now have to try to help him win the election. Bill was the hit of the convention and Hillary has taken the blame for the Libyia mess. I don't understand why. Further,, I'd like to respond to the person who is complaining about music class and art class and some classrooms without supplies. Are you kidding me? Go buy some and nonate them or volunteer to teach the children in your neighborhood music and art in the evenings or on the weekends. I do. And I don't even get any deductions for my donations or my child's education (no earned child care cerdit) becasue Obama says I make too much money. While I'm at WALMART buying supplies during my lunch break a lot of other mothers (all using food stamp cards) are spedning the day with their children eating the cupcakes they've purchased and talking on their I Phones. Give me a break!

The claim that Romney is desparate .. lets think about this ... Romney leads in Flordia, Virginia, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and Colorado ... that adds up to 271 electorial votes ... As for Ohio, that is not a must win state for Romney, IT IS for Obama ... If Obama does not win Ohio, he will loose the election ... on the other hand Romney does not have to win Ohio to win the election.

    October 31, 2012 02:33 pm at 2:33 pm |

You fool, no way Romney leads in Wisconsin or NH The average of all the polls according to RCP has Obama up by 2.3 1.0. Virginia and Colorado, he is tied. To believe that Romney doesn't have to win Ohio is crazy.

You also may want to add that no GOP president has won the WH with Ohio. If Ohio goes back to Obama, it's game set match for Mitts since he will not be able to break the wall of the Big Ten States of Ohio, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Keep living in your fantasy world that Mitts doesn't need Ohio to win.

Romney will say anything to get elected. First he is pro-choice, then pro-life. Hates coal, now loves coal. Opposed hunting down bin Laden, now says it was a good idea. This guy is a liar, plain and simple. Obama has made some mistakes, but he is clearly the best option in this election.

Romney is getting desperate and low... running ads that have been widely debunked. Heck, at least McCain was a patriot and never reached a level of depravity that Mitt and co. have now sunk to.

Amen to that. I wonder how many "pants on fire" ratings Romney has to get before America wakes up and its too
late. He does lie and will lie, because he has no character, core, or real beliefs about anything but his bank
    accounts.
They claim to be concerned about children, yet their "drill, baby, drill" without concern for the environment
is proof one. Deregulation of clean air and water laws is not caring about our children's future.
How many natural disasters that we cannot control does it take before we start caring about the pollution
    we can control?
People who make fun of the science, or who call some of us "tree huggers" are just as dim-witted as their
    candidates.
Then we have them threatening to get rid of the Department of Education, taking away health care from
children, stopping monies that would help give these children food and shelter, stop school lunch programs.
These are not caring people, they are Republicans, pretending to care. (Some actually do, but they ran them
    out of Congress).

Governor Romney had a chance to make inroads into the problems of those on welfare, food stamps, etc. He had the means to bring CEO's together to begin a program in Massachusetts which does have a lot of people on food stamps. That did not happen. Parents who needed food stamps to stretch their pay checks never got the help. Things did not change. Instead he turned his attention to the national stage and began his bid to be President two years into his term. At the end of his term he left the job, left the state in rather poor condition and pronounced how happy he was to be in his home in New Hampshire. He came, he saw and he left. He did upset the Republican Party of Massachusetts.
