Romney: Economy at 'virtual standstill'

(CNN) - Republican nominee Mitt Romney released the following statement on the October unemployment report:

“Today’s increase in the unemployment rate is a sad reminder that the economy is at a virtual standstill. The jobless rate is higher than it was when President Obama took office, and there are still 23 million Americans struggling for work. On Tuesday, America will make a choice between stagnation and prosperity. For four years, President Obama’s policies have crushed America’s middle class. For four years, President Obama has told us that things are getting better and that we’re making progress. For too many American families, those words ring hollow. We can do better. We can have real economic growth, create millions of good-paying jobs, and give middle-class families the security and opportunity they deserve. When I’m president, I’m going to make real changes that lead to a real recovery, so that the next four years are better than the last.”

"23 million Americans struggling for work" many of those jobs are you personally responsible for outsourcing to India and China through your brainchild Bain Capital?

Show us your tax returns Willard. You are a criminal for not disclosing income from your off-shore accounts on your tax returns. THAT's why you don't show them!!!!!!!!

The economy could have added 800,000 jobs and this guy with his GOP's would say the same thing.

Oh please... We added 40% more jobs, meaning more people are able to HAVE a job.... and the increase was insignificant in that it went from 7.8 to 7.9... There are 3 million jobs out right now that are in the "hiring" process... that is PROGRESS mitt! Progress that you want credit for... I really hate a liar

Romney's campaign could not say anything different about the most recent jobs report. He has campaigned from the start by saying that everything that has happened in the economy in the last four years is solely the responsibility of Obama. The world is not that simple. Had Romney been President the last four years, maybe we would be in the same place we are now, but more likely we would be worse off. Not since the 1930s has the economy been through such a wild ride, and the current recovery has been faster and more dramatic than happened back then. But Obama also should not take credit for this. We really have Helicopter Ben to thank for the economic charts. The next President, whoever that will be, will have to cope with the almost certainty of part two of a double dip recession and a Fed that is out of options.

There he goes again....Mitt was just dying for some insignificant sliver of something to crow about and he got it. Although it isnt much to, he and his right wingnuts will try to spin the hell out of this. Even if this report showed unemployment at 10% it wouldnt affect the outcome of this election, as alot of well informed people have already voted for our President. Forward! Obama/Biden 2012

Well Romney can add all the employees at Sensata Technologies in Freeport, Illinois this coming monday on Nov. 5th to the 23 million Americans struggling for work when Bain Capital shuts down the company and outsource all of it's jobs to China a day before the presidential election. Romney will profit millions off of this deal. Tell your supporters that Romney!

Same stump speech from Romney. He just hates that the economy is getting better and we are headed in the right direction. Look at his record as Governor of Massachusetts for job growth. Proudly cast my vote for Obama two days ago.

  11. Recovering republican voter: Never again!

Mitt, you can't spin this. Does the economy matter? Yes. Is it all that matters to voters? No. The economy is getting better. Seasonal jobs (such as those at resorts and country clubs) in places w/ four seasons will always play a role in the unemployment rate this time of year. They always have and always will. Did you smile, Mitt, when you saw the report?

I plan to vote for a congress and senate that will get the hell out of the way! I'm also voting for my right to have a choice. My right to fair pay for equal work. Equality for all. And stop the fear and hate. Just stop.

I'm voting against the likes of Grover Norquist who stated he doesn't need a president to use his God-given brain; just one with 5 digits to sign on the dotted line. Are you kidding me? And you fit the bill, Mitt. You are a serial liar and fear monger. In short, I'm voting for the man I feel has been unjustly raked over the coals by the republican party. President Obama.

"I'm going to make real changes"... care to share? Why won't this man tell us his plans!!!??? why won"t he give DETAILS?? would a company hire a CEO who just told them "Trust me, I know what"s right for your company. You'll have to hire me first before you get what I plan to do".? HE'D GUT THE COMPANY AND RUN! Don't let him do that to the U.S.!

"change" back to the old Duh Duh Duh-bya days when we were bleeding jobs. Of course the T-B'ers never heard of that until Obama took office. THEN they cared

  16. Enough of Romney

Romney is grumpy! "virtual standstill" is code for "I (Romney) got nothing." Romney can't make his 8% claim anymore. I was hoping today that Romney would step down and let Chris Christie take over. Romney is now irrelevant, again. MR. ROMNEY, MORE PEOPLE ARE WORKING THAN EXPECTED, AND THAT IS A GOOD THING. Maybe Chris Christie in 2016. We wanted Gov Christie anyway and this week Gov Christies reminded US why.

It is not at a standstill- months of continuous jobs growth, rising consumer confidence, more jobs, increasing wages, more new housing starts- an almost 100% increase in the stock market.

But look, here's the thing: think of how much better it would be if the Republicans actually got to work. All they have done is sit on the sidelines and snipe. No jobs bills, just ultra-radical TEA Party inspired anti-abortion and anti-birth control bills.

That is what you'll get by voting Republican- a return to Bush-o-nomics, and a Taliban-like society where fundametalist religion inspires our laws.

  18. Just an observation..

The report says that unemployment rate is contingent upon the number of unemployed people that are ACTUALLY looking for jobs. Since there are more businesses hiring right now (i.e. MORE JOBS AVAILABLE), people who previously gave up are starting to be hopeful again and are actually looking for these jobs. Good news and very exciting.

We are moving forward! I love progress!!

Give it up Romney, the key word is added. Why do you think that you could have done better? Oh that's right Congress & the Tea Party would have bent over backwards to help one of their own. President Obama has been doing this without any help. Imagine what he could have gotten done with some help! If the Republicans weren't so bent out of shape to make our President a one term President we would be well on our way to a better recovery. So it is happening slower then we want but it is happening. Our President deserves a second term!!!

  20. ThinkAgain: All of the GOP's policies are PROVEN FAILURES

Sure, Mittens would get the economy moving again – STRAIGHT DOWN THE TOILET! David Stockman, Reagan's former budget director, has called Munster's budget (which Mittens supports), an "empty conservative sermon" and "fairy tale" and says it will "do nothing to reverse the nation's economic decline and arrest its fiscal collapse."

The economy is at a "virtual standstill" says the former one term governor of Massachusettes who's job performance included being 47th and out 50th in job creation in the nation during his tenure.

  23. ThinkAgain: All of the GOP's policies are PROVEN FAILURES

Sure, Mittens would get the economy moving again – STRAIGHT DOWN THE TOILET!

David Stockman, Reagan's budget director, has said of Mittens he was not a businessman; he was a master financial speculator who bought, sold, flipped, and stripped businesses.

Mittens did not build businesses the old-fashioned way; instead, Mittens spent his 15 years raising huge amount of debt on Wall Street so that Bain Capital could purchase the "pots and pans and castoffs of corporate America,
leverage them to the hilt, gussy them up as reborn roll-ups,” and then deliver them back to Wall Street for resale—the faster the better.

We still do not know what his plan means. He is not giving us the info we need to make a clear choice, We do know that he thanked his wealthy backers and that he does not support the 43%. He will govern for the 53% I guess. He will allow others to play bad cop even when they do not tell the truth and continue to do so even when the truth is told to them. He does not know how to surround himself with people with new ideas.

His background is not in growing jobs but in corporate mergers and takeovers. In those situations he was responsible for pink slip and more unemployment. He did not start any job retraining organizations. He did not grown jobs in MA when he was governor. The Western portion of the start continued to show an increase in unemployment and the area did not grow.
