Washington (CNNMoney) - The tab for the 2012 election is breaking records, with $4.2 billion raised through Sunday on the races for the White House and Congress.
When all the numbers roll in, some $6 billion could be spent on the election, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

GREAT!! More freedom of speech is ALWAYS the best alternative. Only leftists want to restrict free speech in order for their propaganda to go unchallenged. THANK YOU USSC!!! Freedom of speech RULES!!
This election is a win-win for crazy right wingnuts. If President Obama wins tomorrow the right wingnuts also win because they get to keep their social security, medicare and veterans benefits, their tax cuts, their equal pay for women, our troops coming home from Afghanistan, and a growing economy. If the lying Mittens wins, they lose all of the above, we head to a major depression, but a black guy will not be president.
Think of all the good that money could have done if it was spent on charity rather than hateful, misleading and obnoxious political ads!
Democracy dies not with a whimper, but a donation.
mark zuckerberg could have paid for that
Sniffit - Democracy dies not with a whimper, but a donation.
But you din't say this when Bill Maher gave Obama's Super PAC one millions dollars. Please Sniffy! Cover up... your hypocrisy is showing.
This is a disgrace to the american people. Thiis is why politics is for the rich and the middle class pays for it in the end. I have no faith in government any of them. We don't need the black guy to be the president as WIRE stated above. We need a true American to lead the american people, black and white!!!!!
That money could have gone a long way in helping those that need it. Sounds like legalized corruption to me, people buying election results.
Mitt is spending in USA to take money to CHINA. Idiot.
Nothing speaks louder for a change to a one six year term for president than the amount of money spent ....this money went into the pockets of who exactly? Advertising? marketing experts? TV conglomerates? None of those ads inform you like a debate or town hall meetings do. Televise that and only that, no re-election fundraising for tv propaganda ads, only real information for free. Now that's change!!!
there needs to be a law that triples or more the cost of political ads in the last 1-2 months of the election cycles. The extra money goes to charity.
Wake up people. Focus on the big picture. This type of spending should tell the middle class whose interests our politians will actually serve: The international banking cartel's who continue to ruin our
country's economy to ensure their power and influence over us all. Jesse Ventura 2016.
"But you din't say this when Bill Maher gave Obama's Super PAC one millions dollars."
Oh for crying out loud, would you stop with the knee-jerk attempts to "oh yeah?" people by claiming they didn't criticize their "team" for the same crap they critize the "opponent" for? I dont' think anyone should be allowed to attempt to influence our elections solely by throwing their wealth around. I happen to not like ANYONE being able to give money like that to anything involved in elections processes that are supposed to be "one person, one vote." Especially, non-people like corporations, and in this case PACs, shouldn't also have the right to drown out the rest of the populace's participation in the election process with "free speech" when they don't also have the right to vote. The right to participate in elections should be connected at the navel with the right to vote. Corporations don't have a freekin navel.
"Thiis is why politics is for the rich and the middle class pays for it in the end."
Indeed. What do you think happens to the prive of goods at Wal-Mart when the Walton family is forced to spend billions tryign to get more tax cuts?
BDC - This is a disgrace to the american people
Get a grip.... this is peanuts. Many large corporation spend this much in a year to sell their products. Just which speech/ads would you censor? All of Obama's personal attack ads on Romney?
"2012 election priciest to date: $4.2 billion tab and rising"
And you know who benefits in the end, people? That's right: the MSM, major networks and the advertising industry. CNN's ad department walls were covered in skeet the day the Citizens United decision came out, as were the campaign headquarters for major candidates around the country. "They get to pay us unlimited amounts of money for advertising? Skeet skeet skeet!!!!" What better situation could the partisans from both parties have possibly hoped for than the opportunity to influence "news" coverage of their candidates via their ad spending? Heck, there was just a report a couple weeks ago about some GOPer, I think it was in New York, who literally sent a letter to a tv station threatening to pull his advertising money if they didn't start covering his opponent in a more negative manner. You think that's an isolated incident from either party? You think the threat isn't 100% implicit? How much money do you think Crossroads paid to CNN this election and how much do you think it influenced the palpable shift towards leaning right that objective observers have noticed from CNN?
Thank goodness, Romney has lots of money to spend for his campaign.
Sniffit - Corporations don't have a freekin navel
You're right, not A navel, but thousands maybe MILLIONS of navels that are connected to their employees, shareholders and bondholders. I know you leftists just want to attack, tax, regulate, demonize, takeover an duse corporations for your ends or for a piggy bank without allowing them the ability to spend money to defend their own interests. Without that ability, YOU control them completely.
Like any good commie revolutionary knows, the first order of business when taking over a country is to take control of the means of communication. What you advoate here with regards to corporations is no different.
Think of the number of Americans that can feed their families, clothe them and provide homes for them with that money. We need to change the process of elections and limit the amount one can spend and get rid of the electorial college. Make it all a grassroot proposition with only a popular vote.
@truth hurts: If Rawmoney would stop attacking President Obama, the Democrats would stop attackiing the GOP. Experience has taught the Democrats that if they try to be polite, they are perceived as weak, so they have to act like barbarians like the GOP. Insults, lies, snide remarks. These all have to be answered or people will believe them. I love that the moderator of the second debate stopped Mittens from spreading the lie about when the president said the Benghazi attack was a terriorist attack. Wow! What a slap in the face for the Republican enablers to be fact-checked on the spot. Mittens didn't even know what to say after that. I loved it!
Truth is most corporations are now world wide. Money from Russia and China come into American politics buying advertising. So this is why Romney wants to be president?
"You're right, not A navel, but thousands maybe MILLIONS of navels that are connected to their employees, shareholders and bondholders."
And those people can vote for themselves and do their own best to protect their own interests. The corporation cannot vote for them, so it should not be allowed to spend for them.
I hope the same people who scream about freedom of speech will scream as loud about allowing people to vote!!!! How about it truth hurts?
"Like any good commie revolutionary knows, the first order of business when taking over a country is to take control of the means of communication. What you advoate here with regards to corporations is no different."
You clearly have zero idea what you're talking about. Go read some books. Maybe start with Anatomy of a Revolution...in particular, the French Revolution and how it evolved and what caused it to come to a head. As for the constant refrain about communism and socialism, you're a very very sad little troll of a human being who clearly thinks that your McCartyhist nonsense works on people outside of the GOP/Teatroll base. It's not even remotely accurate. Nobody is arguing for the gov't to take over the means of production, etc. regulation is not a take over. Setting the rules under which the game must be played is not a take over. Creating limits to what is allowed in order to protect the integrity of the free market system and the interests of the millions and millions of participants there is not a take over. You've simply got nothing left but a fervent return to 1950's fear mongering.
Sniffit, so agree with you on the Corporations/Navels junk
The other day the Koch Bros sent a letter to each current and laid off employee they have.
It said they must vote for Robmey or they could lose their jobs.
