Washington voters pass same-sex marriage, CNN projects

(CNN) – The lunch hour is usually hectic at Duos Catering in Seattle. But Thursday the phone was ringing off the hook.

In between orders of crab cakes and pan seared scallops, many people wanted to congratulate Benjamin Jury and Joshua Cooper. The longtime couple could finally get married legally in Washington, according to ballots tallied from Tuesday's election.

BREAKING: CIA Director Petraeus resigns

(CNN) - CIA Director David Petraeus submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama, citing personal reasons, a U.S. government source told CNN.

The source said Petreaus admitted to an extra-marital affair.

In a statement issued Friday, he said: "After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation."

Obama calls on House to pass tax hikes for wealthy

Washington (CNN) - Flush with re-election vigor, President Barack Obama called Friday for House Republicans to immediately pass a bill already approved by the Senate to extend current tax rates for middle class Americans while allowing a tax hike for wealthier citizens.

In his first public comments since winning Tuesday's vote, Obama expressed openness to negotiate with Congress on how to deal with pending tax hikes and spending cuts that create the so-called fiscal cliff facing the economy at the end of the year.

RNC chairman mulls second term as party begins major review

Washington (CNN) – As a major review by the Republican National Committee of what went wrong, and right, in the 2012 election gets underway, we may soon learn if the party committee's chairman will run for a second term.

RNC officials tell CNN that by the end of next week Reince Preibus will probably make a decision on whether he runs or not for another two years as chairman of the party committee. The RNC will hold its election for chairman in January.

Obama invites congressional leaders to White House

(CNN) - President Barack Obama is inviting bipartisan leaders from the Senate and the House of Representatives for a White House meeting, a senior administration official confirmed Friday.

A Democratic aide says the invitation was extended for next Friday to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Rubio trip to Iowa stirring talk of '16

(CNN) - Word of Republican Sen. Marco Rubio's trip to Iowa next weekend has many people who cover campaign politics buzzing.

The popular freshman senator from Florida will headline a birthday fundraiser for Terry Branstad, the Hawkeye State's GOP governor. Since Iowa holds the first contest in the caucus and primary calendar, Thursday's announcement is stirring talk of a possible bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

Boehner calls on president to lead in debt talks

Washington (CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner declined to give any details on what ground Republicans could give in negotiations with the White House on the fiscal cliff, but continued his post-election emphasis that he is willing to compromise.

"I don't want to box myself in and I don't want to box anyone else in," Boehner told reporters on Capitol Hill at his first news conference since Tuesday's election.

Another Bush flirts with office in Texas

(CNN) - George P. Bush, the nephew of former President George W. Bush and son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, this week filed paperwork required to run for office in the state of Texas.

The 36-year-old attorney hand-delivered the document Wednesday to the Texas Ethics Commission, the agency that oversees campaigns for state offices, including state senators, state legislators and statewide positions.

Business group blows $29 million on election losers

Washington (CNNMoney) – Most of the $36 million that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce spent on its pro-business agenda this election went down the drain.

According to federal records compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, a watchdog group, $29 million of the money was spent in races that the Chamber's favored candidate lost.
