Rep. Bono Mack concedes House race to Democratic foe

(CNN) - The Democrats picked up another seat in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday after longtime Rep. Mary Bono Mack conceded defeat three days after the election.

Bono Mack - who in 1998 succeeded her late husband Sonny Bono, one half of the famous Sonny and Cher singing duo before he went into politics - said Friday in a statement that she had called Democrat Raul Ruiz "and congratulated him on his impressive victory."

"After 25 years of public life in the beautiful desert, it is now time for me to start a new chapter in my life," said Bono Mack, who resides in the Palm Springs area of southern California.

With Ruiz's win, Democrats now have at least 195 seats in the House. Republicans are still guaranteed a majority, with at least 234 seats, while six contests remain too close to call.

Bono Mack won't have to look to find someone who understands what it feels like to lose this election cycle. Her current husband, former Rep. Connie Mack IV, lost his bid for a Senate seat against incumbent Bill Nelson in Florida.

CNN's Robert Yoon contributed to this report.

Given all the GOP represents, the more they are diminished, the better for America because they personify the worst of us and all while being so holier-than-thou about themselves. Despite all their best efforts at fear, voter suppression, race baiting, pandering to small minds and a myriad of other vile antics they were handed their behinds on a big platter. The REAL majority in America has spoken. Let's hope this signals a change in public discourse fromlacking civility to civil. From lying to speaking with more honesty, from seeking out the worst in others to looking for the best and from understanding that we achieve the most with positive pursuit not manifesting such destructive negativity.

What?! The Widow Bono, who glommed onto Sonny Bono's political coat-tails after his death, is married to Connie Mack, who just tried and failed to glom onto his father's political coat-tails in Florida?! Wow! Peas in a pod, eh?

When is Florida EVER going to finish? Or will it?

Those people need some new folks in charge of elections. What they have had for 12 years is a MESS. Republicans, you say? Surprise.

Sonny Bono was a joke, she was a joke, and her latest husband was a joke.

    3 jokers gone. Good riddance.

Sorry that Sonny died, but glad he's no longer in DC.

Democrats would have had more congressional seats if red state GOP governors did not gerrymandered districts to favor their candidates.

I'm here in Palm Springs where Mary Bono Mack lost the election. Mary Bono Mack has displayed a relentless disconcern for the people of this district on all levels. Her vow was to the extreme T-Party movement and did nothing for the last 6 years to support her community. He record in congress and achievements are not there. The people in this valley have been ignored and not herd for a very long time. Dr Ruiz who won the election is a great asset to us and we look forward to a representive who will see that everyone here gets a fair shake and everybodys voices are herd on all issues. Thank God she is now GONE!
