RNC chairman mulls second term as party begins major review

Washington (CNN) – As a major review by the Republican National Committee of what went wrong, and right, in the 2012 election gets underway, we may soon learn if the party committee's chairman will run for a second term.

RNC officials tell CNN that by the end of next week Reince Preibus will probably make a decision on whether he runs or not for another two years as chairman of the party committee. The RNC will hold its election for chairman in January.

Had Mitt Romney won Tuesday's presidential election, he would have handpicked a chairman. But since he lost, the decision now falls to RNC voting members.

Priebus, the former head of the Wisconsin Republican party, two years ago came out on top of a crowded field of candidates, which included then RNC chairman Michael Steele. He is credited with turning the committee around, especially financially, after the controversies of the Steele years.

While Preibus mulls his future, the RNC's review is underway, with surveys of voters in the battleground states already taking place.

"Win lose or draw, we need to do this. It needs to start right away," RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer tells CNN. "While the election is still top of mind, we need to get the best data possible."

The two-month long review will also include focus groups, meetings with constituency group leaders, in-depth discussions with party staff members, donors, and volunteers.

"There's a lot of things that we did extremely well. We need to continue to do them. We made more voter contacts than ever before. Our research, our videos, were second to none. Our fundraising was phenomenal," adds Spicer. "But there were things that didn't work as well. We need to improve on those things. We need to ask ourselves what we can do better."

The review will also study what President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee did during the election.

Spicer says the review was going to happen whether Romney won or lost: "This was going to be a win or lose thing. It was going to happen either way."

The Obama campaign conducted such a wide-scale review four years ago after Obama first won the White House, and it was helpful in keeping the campaign's field organization, known as Organizing for America, alive over the past four years.

The RNC did not conduct such a review after the 2008 election.

Spicer says this is why they are now doing such a proper analysis, to help determine "what would it cost to maintain such a permanent apparatus in the states, and what benefit would we get out of this."

@The Real Tom Paine.........flat-earthers? I love it! I wonder how many of them there are.......I'm guessing about half the party. After Tuesday's results, you'd think they would start running those folks out.......but I see no signs of it yet. Boehner needs to man up or the GOP is headed the way of the dinosaurs. It's an entertaining thing to watch......

Boehner won't man up, because he knows Cantor is stalking him. He'll keep tacking to the right because he is more terrified of the Tea Party than he is of President Obama. The Neanderthals that gave us Alan West, Richard Mourdock and others will never admit they have been operating from a flawed premise, and they will keep doubling down on their ignorance because they have accepted a theology that does not accept dissent. They are a barely secular Taliban.

Wow, I cannot believe that everyone is not trying to throw this guy under the nearest bus. Does anyone wonder why this guy is surviving and Michael Steele didn't (even though Steele delivered in 2010)? The reasoning is so obvious it is plain why the Republican party has such a problem with any voter who is not over 55 and white. All through the election the Republican party kept saying that if Obama was in charge of a corporation he would be fired. Well, if this guy was in charge of a corporation after the recent dismal performance he would have been fired. This would be funny if it was not so sad. The Republican party cannot even see how foolish they look when they pull this nonsense.

Prairiebus is the worst little, naive, corny, bureaucrat the GOP has ever hired. He is losing votes for the GOP every
time he shows his stupid face. Indeed, he is as bad as McConnell.

Reince Priebus is a fake name for a very fake person. Just remove the vowels – RNC PR BS

Vote him OUT – he was even more adept at lies than Mitt the Twitt.

Send Mr. Caterpillar to where he came from. He didn't deliver to the party. Folks don't reward do-nothing people like him.

If Boehner and his baggers don't help produce good jobs in the next 12 to 18 months, I see a lot of them being replaced by reasonable democrats in 2014. Watch them very closely. We have at least one we're watching like a hawk, and he will probably be gone in 2014 unless he tears up his agreement with Norquist in front of us.

As a Democrat, I wholeheartedly endorse a second term for the RNC chairman who presided over their embarrassing defeat in this election.

If the Reps. continue on their same course, come 2014 the Dems. should be able to clear the house and senate of these moronic T-partiers as they are obviously responsible for the re-election of our pres.

The RNC will not let Preibus go because that would come far too close to ADMITTING defeat and that some mistakes were made.

This RNC press release is just sniff test and to plant the seed of an idea in your head that Preibus is staying on. I think the post lasts for two years. Trust me, he'll get nominated and re-elected as RNC Chairman.

Prebius is a weanie of the lowest order. We need a viable Repub party, which they haven't been for many years, and the first step is to cut loose the whimpy whiners – start with Prebius.

Let's see, Michael Steele was out on his keester after the 2010 shellacking, and they won! Shouldn't the guy at the helm when the GOP looses seat s be shown the door? I'm a Democrat so I would like to see him stay because 2014 will be fun, since the Repubs feel they only have to get a few tokens from each group and they will be good.

Don't forget to duck.....the next time we see this little monkee in public he will be throwing his feces at selected targets, just like all the other [R] monkees are at this point. Apparently everyone ELSE is to blame for their election losses, except for them, except for their backwards idiology, except for their anti-intellectual approach to the world.

Look at it this way, when you are so stupid that you believe that women can CHOOSE to shutdown pregnancy after rape, is it any wonder that you can also believe that it is not necessary to pay any serious attention to the reasons for your election FAILURES, and CHOOSE to blame someone else???? Let's just say that the 'stupid' is so ingrained and interbred into [R]s these days that you couldn't beat it out of them with a 40oz bat. But I'll volunteer to try.

BREAKING NEWS: Steel's term as chairman was riddled with scandals related to wasting donations on expensive junkets. Remember the "conference" they had flown to that was held at a strip joint? The only reason Steele was not fired sooner was because he was on such a roll with his fund raising and coordination efforts.

Indeed. It's "turtles all the way down" and the very first one that needs to go is Minority Leader Beaker.
