Florida governor orders voting process review

(CNN) - Gov. Rick Scott of Florida on Saturday said he requested a review of his state's voting processes with a particular emphasis on areas where voters waited four hours or longer to cast their ballots.

"We are glad that so many voters made their voices heard in this election, but as we go forward we must see improvements in our election process," Scott said in a statement. "I have asked Secretary of State Ken Detzner to review this general election and report on ways we can improve the process after all the races are certified.”

More than 8.5 million votes were cast this year, Scott said, an increase from the approximately 8.3 million Florida ballots cast in 2008.

But last cycle, the state allowed two weeks of early voting, which was shortened this year to eight days. Election boards were permitted to schedule as little as 48 hours of early voting.

"As part of this evaluation, Secretary Detzner will meet with county election supervisors, who are elected or appointed to their position - especially those who ran elections in counties where voters experienced long lines of four hours or more," the Florida Republican said in his statement. "We need to make improvements for Florida voters and it is important to look at processes on the state and the county level. We will carefully review suggestions for bettering the voting process in our state."

President Barack Obama noted the long lines encountered by voters in several states in his election night remarks.

"I want to thank every American who participated in this election," he said in Chicago early Wednesday morning. “Whether you voted for the very first time or waited in line for a very long time - by the way, we have to fix that."

A previous review ordered by Scott drew controversy over the summer.

The governor directed that local election boards review their voter rolls and remove names of people who appeared to be ineligible.

CNN projected earlier on Saturday that Obama narrowly won the presidential race in the state.

The Republican Governor waits until AFTER the election to review the voting process in heavy Democratic Counties???? This problem has been known for several years now. I live in a different part of Florida and had no problem voting! Governor Scott has to go!

Time to make a name for yourself here, Mr. Scott. The nation will be watching, as well as the President.... how well a job YOU do, the man in charge of Florida.... Make this right. U don't want this state to be the mocked a third time do you?
If you accomplish anything during your current term, THIS will stand out in history: "Florida, is finally one of the first states with ALL it's ballots counted, within hours of the polls closing."-Presidential Election, 2016.
Good Luck to you, Gov. Rick Scott

It's about time someone in power said something. But until they actually DO something I'm going to remain skeptical that anything will ever be done.

  10. Oh please

The governor was one of the people involved in cutting down the number of early voting days. They need to investigate the governor himself.

Any way we can give Florida to Cuba? What an embarrassment again 10 years later after the "chad" debacle. I never understand the allure of Florida...people are dumb as stones, they smell with all the heat and humidty that persists most of the year, the services suck, people are crabby and they cannot even get a major election right! The "sandheads" are in the sun too much and it is baking their brains...Sunshine State? More like Sunstroke State!

  12. GOP = Greed Over People!

Scott and the GOP voter suppression attempt in FL may have cost them votes instead of President O.

Has he ever tried voting after leaning on a walker for 7 hours?

I just moved here last year and so far I'm amazed at the level of non-sense that permeates just about every aspect of Florida – from it's governmental capabilities (whether municipal, county or state levels). And it's not like I had just come from a shining example of what represents good government – Shelby County, TN for 7 years!

Oh, how I want to turn the clock back and never leave Colorado again.

Glad the GOP sponsored voter suppression efforts failed in Florida and Ohio and every where else. The people realized what was going on and worked around the BS and easily throttled Florida's election process. Now this governor needs to clean it up, expand voting hours and stop the rightwind control chicanery. everyone gets a vote and in this country, everyone should be able to do it.

If the governor is serious about improving the state's voting system the very first thing he must do is remove politicians from having any control over the system.

Scott tried to suppress the minority votes that's why he cut the early voting from 2 weeks to just 1. Well his racist plan back fired, making minorities stand thier ground by waiting for ow ever long it took. It was the seniors whom tend to back Romney whom couldn't resist standing on those long lines. Either way that was wrong, everyone should be allowed to cast thier ballot without waiting 6 hours like some people did in Orange and Dade counties.

Florida voters should have a special election for this subject to determine if they want to keep Rick Scott and everyone associates with the voting arrangement.

Gov Rick Scott you are the one to blame. If you want to understand what happen just look at yourself in the mirror. It is a shame that you cut advance voting days and made people wait soon in line.

What is this a joke? Scott shortened the early voting time on purpose in order to suppress early voters from voting and wonder why the voting this year was a nightmare for the state? Why is this happening year after year? Why is it that parties in control for the state keep manipulating rules so that they can favor/suppress particular voters? They really should have a national agency overseeing the voting process and standardize it across the nation so that this does not happen again.
