Feinstein says she'll push for Petraeus to testify

(CNN) – Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman, said she hopes to talk to Gen. David Petraeus and will urge him to testify on the Benghazi, Libya attacks as previously scheduled.

"I believe he will. I think he's a responsible person and I believe he will come. We are going to try to set that up today," she said in an interview to air Tuesday on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."

Feinstein said the former CIA director's testimony is relevant because news of his extramarital affair broke after his recent trip to Libya, where he discussed the violence and other issues with the CIA station chief there.

In a separate interview with CNN Senior Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash, Feinstein said Tuesday the committee could call Petraeus to appear on Capitol Hill as early as Friday morning, adding that his lack of testimony would be a very big stone left unturned.

Feinstein told CNN that she and Sen. Saxby Chambliss, the vice chairman of the committee, are meeting with Michael Morell, the acting director of the CIA who took over after Petraeus resigned Friday, and other intelligence officials as part of an "inquiry" into September's U.S. consulate attack in Libya that killed four Americans.

"(Petraeus) was actually in Benghazi, and actually spoke to people involved in the incident. I think that's important for us to hear," she said on "The Situation Room."

She later added: "There's only one way to ascertain (his trip), and that is to talk directly with Petraeus and do it in a classified setting with the committee present."

The California senator has been vocal in her disappointment of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for its handling of the Petraeus scandal, as well as a second investigation involving Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, and "potentially inappropriate" e-mails he exchanged with Jill Kelley, a friend of Petraeus.

Feinstein questioned why the FBI did not notify oversight committees in Congress about the investigations beforehand, given that classified information could be at risk.

"It's rather shocking to find out candidly that we weren't briefed and that we find out from the press in the way in which we did, with no heads up, with no opportunity to ask questions, or put together any information," she said. "So we have been coming from behind on this."

She continued: "I have many questions about the nature of the FBI investigation, how it was instituted, and we'll be asking those questions."

if petraeus testifies it'll be the end of hillary clintons career for not providing proper security after several requests and many attacks proving how dangerous it was.

obama and many others should be removed for incompetence if he was previously briefed and didn't order better security. and where was he while the actual attack was happening? flying to the vegas camapign fund raiser?

3am call came and both clinton and obama didn't answer. results, 4 americans dead.

it is hysterical all the mud that Fox is throwing around thinking about things it could be.
Petraeus is a hard core GOP, if he was invloved in the Benghazi terrorism then he would look like a fool.
He does not agree with the President on many of his polices.

Good luck Feinstein if you think he will testify. When Capitol Hill called on Carl Rove, you all thought he would testify also, but he didn't.

If he's truly a patriot and cares about the country, he'll testify. I don't care who he screwed, that's between him and his family. But he owes it to the country as the CIA head during that time to testify.

So, according to right winguts, Obama should not have placed a right wingnut like Patraeus in charge of anything. Now that makes sense.

    @Oliver

Wilson, is it such a crazy idea to think that the government may have assisted me along the way in my life? I went to public schools, I use public transportation to and from work and yes, Obama's Pell grant gave me 8k to help pay off my student loans. That doesn't mean I have not had to work for everything I have. It means that in America, people are given opportunities, but they must reach out for them. Earning scholarships is not a handout.

I am not a socialist. I actually read the likes of Ayn Rand instead of simply quoting her. I believe that capitalism and becoming exceptional is something you must fight for every day. Capitalism is the only system that I will ever believe in. But I'm not so naieve to think that capitalism can exist unchecked. I've read John Locke's state of capitalism, I understand that it must have oversight. I also believe government exists to help people, as it has helped all of us throughout our lives. You can take advantage of the help it has to offer or not. Personally, as long as I am paying 30% in taxes, I am going to get something for my investment. I am going to take advantage of social security when I retire, medicare when I need it, these are systems I have paid into. And if Obama wants to put kids to school instead of into graves in Iraq, I'm all for it.
    ---------------------------------------------
If you believe as you say, then you have no business voting socialist.

This all blew up after Cantor got a tip from an FBI employee, funny how it all came in the last weeks of Oct...just before the elections.....looks to me like Cantor tried to leak this out just before the election so their man could win.....Cantor needs to be investigated.....why would he have all this information before anyone else......take about a conspiracy.......

"@justsayin" what at necon wingnut from a alternative universe with no clue, still grapsing for straws after the election, a typical "loser mentality!" If President Obama or Hillary Clinton is to be brought up on charges regarding the Bengazi attack; why didn't neocon conservative republican socalled patriots looking for justice when Bush was president! Bush had many Embassy attacks under his watch and 10 Americans killed, so let bring him, Cheney and Rice back for criminal prosecution! Also, since we are in the criminal prosecuting mood, let us not forget 9/11 where almost 3,00 American lives were lost on the homeland, over 4,000 military dead, over 38,000 wounded and over 100,000 Iraqi lives lost due to lies, cover up, and repulican war mongers in the pockets of defense contractors! LETS GET ANSWERS ABOUT A REAL BLACK EYE ON AMERICAN LIBERTY AND OUR REPUTATION AROUND THE WORLD!

And to think while all of this bad behavior was taking place we were worried about the potential negative affects of repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell. Maybe we should have been paying extra attention to the straight married men in the military, CIA, & FBI.

Everyone needs to testify. Four Americans were brutally murdered, while possibly our president watched in real time. Patraeus is just one in a long line of testimonies needed. And, please – two days after the election this news breaks?? Even the Obama suporters have to know this is more than a coincidence.

Funny how Cantors involvement just weeks out from the eletions from an FBI employee that had been taken off the case because of inappropiate photos sent to Kelly....ended up telling Cantor who has no affliation what so ever over National Security......looks like a conspricy alright......Cantor was hoping this would open a pandora's box before the election so the Republicans could win.....but it didn't work out that way.....but it did ruin a Generals career.....a Republican at that.......Republicans will take down even their owe to just win an election......the General should testify and set the record straight and I think when all is said and done......the republicans are going to come out on the down again.....their WATERGATE blew up in their face and this one will too

Obama has been in office for four years now. The horrific acts in Benghazi and the scandal with Patreaus happened on his watch – not on Bush's or Nixon's. He also spent more than any other president ever, and astronomically increased the deficit. Is it not in a democrat's DNA to be accountable?

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. needs to do the honorable thing and step down .

For him to recover he needs to focus on himself and family . You can't lead others when ones mental health is in question and ones recovery is of priority. It world be selfish of him to stay in office . He can always run again , the work of the day can't wait ..

I wish you all the best Mr. Jackson , and hope you do the right thing !
