(CNN) – President Barack Obama and congressional leaders wrapped up their first "fiscal cliff" meeting since the election with a confident tone that had both sides suggesting an agreement could be reached before January 1, when hefty federal spending cuts and tax raises are scheduled to take effect.
"My hope is that this will be the beginning of a fruitful process," said Obama, just prior to the meeting meant to avert the so-called fiscal cliff, which some economists warn could push the country into recession.
That simply isn't going to happen. The divide is too great.
Obama has succeeded in creating the camps of war.
If Boehner agrees to any amount of tax increases, he will be seen by tea party idiots and the majority of brainwashed Republicans as a failure. Obama will be considered the winner. This scenario would mean another loss and the end of the Republican party of the past 12 years. It will be interesting to see if Boehner and the House wise-up and move forward with the majority of the country or continue going backwards and alienating themselves. I don't believe they have the insight or intelligence to survive.
First and foremost, Social Security should be off the table. Democrats, DO NOT BUDGE ON THAT!!!! Medicare reform IS necessary. Just over the last year or two there's been billions of dollars of fraud that the DOJ has discovered. The solution to making Medicare solvent for the future is to offer more Medicare Advantage Plans such as Humana or the BCBS Medicare HMO. My parents for example are well off financially. Seniors such as them should not be eligible to get traditional Medicare, but be mandated to get a Medicare Replacement Plan. The defense budget needs to be trimmed down. You want to talk about waste, fraud and abuse, look no further than the defense budget. Money being allocated for tanks and jets that the military does not need. You can also decommission some of these bases. In Virginia, we shut down Ft. Monroe as we did with Ft. Story. The Bush tax cuts need to expire for the top 2%. NO BUDGING ON THIS ISSUE!!!
this whole thing doesn't make sense to me – I've got a very small business – ( and I mean small) have 3 employees working only part ime for me – but my Business is only seasonal – from March through the end of October – then I lay my part time people off from November thru Feb. btw – I don't mind paying a little bit more in Taxes.
Warren Buffett is a Billionaire – If he doesn't mind paying a little bit more in Taxes, then what's the big deal for the CEO's and huge owners of big Corporations ?
If I taxed the people that I'm paying only minimum wage More – Then They Won't Spend as Much. The people that makes the Least, are the people that will Spend the Most.
Don't get me wrong, money is flowing in Texas fairly well. But the rest of this country is really Hurting.
am I missing something here ?
CNN – if you don't print this – then Shame on You !
If congress doesn't know the extent of frustration the American people have in their inability to resolve this issue....every member is ignorant!!! The members who show any realization that this is the time to step up and do the hard work of compromise need to take center stage ,while the insolent need to be shown to be just that....regardless of party. We don't need a hero...just members doing what they are paid to do! Run our country. Yes the country that we all built, the country this congress and everyone in it can ruin by ignorance.
People on this blog continues to blame Obama for the divide, like congress has nothing to do with it. Repubs are pathetic!! Obama won the election, most of the american people voted for his policies so Obama should have the upper hand just like every other president had in negotiations.
onlyfacts, the SENATE under the leadership of senile Reid is supposed to produce a budget, which they have not in over FOUR years, so put blame on those who are at fault. But the you're so biased you can't see straight.
The democrats need to pry about three dozen republicans away from the Tea Party domination to pull off a deal. A lot of republican members have seen that voting as a bloc at the direction of the Tea Party has been good for neither party nor nation. This is getting interesting!
Larry in Houston, most people would not mind paying more taxes IF the government would not use it to pay of their supporters, Unions, pick winners and losers in business, but use the money to pay down the Natl.Debt.
Warren Buffet does mind paying more taxes, why do you think he pays himself NOT a salary but takes his income in form of capital gain.
Why are NFL teems considered non profit , why are the owners of NFL teams exempt from paying taxes . Is Football a religion ?
