Votes to be retabulated in Florida congressional race

(CNN) – Republican Rep. Allen West's push to have votes recounted in his Florida congressional race against Democrat Patrick Murphy was granted late Friday when the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections ordered a retabulation of all eight days of early voting to begin Saturday morning.

In Florida's 18th district, Murphy continues to have a slight lead over West. He declared a victory in the race last week, but West, who has been lobbying for a recount citing issues in the way the ballots were counted and a slim margin of votes between the two, has yet to concede.

According to the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections' website, the retabulation was to start at 9 a.m. Saturday.

West's campaign filed a complaint Tuesday in St. Lucie County, calling for the court to order a recount of all early votes in the county in his race for re-election. Allen's request was initially denied Friday afternoon, but later that evening a canvassing board ordered the retabulation, citing sufficient concern to grant the re-examination of the votes, according to CNN affiliate WPBF in West Palm Beach.

Murphy's campaign communications director Erin Moffet released a statement regarding an injunction filed on behalf of the campaign Saturday to prevent recount.

"The votes were counted on Election Day, recounted last Sunday, and this would be the third time many of these votes have been counted. You can't keep counting until you get the answer you like. The law is clear in what margin requires a recount and Patrick Murphy's lead is outside of that margin," said Moffet.

A statement released Saturday by West's campaign manager Tim Edison said their opponent's effort to stop the retabulation "demonstrates a complete lack of respect and utter disregard for the voters of St. Lucie County."

West, a first-term Republican congressman and retired Army lieutenant colonel, and his Democratic challenger Murphy were locked in one of the country's most expensive races for a U.S. House seat, according to a ranking prepared by the Center for Responsive Politics. West raised $17 million through mid-October and Murphy brought in $3.7 million, according for Federal Election Commission records.

As of Saturday, Murphy leads West by just over 1,900 votes.

The votes are considered unofficial until November 20, when state election officials have said the results will be certified. But West's campaign has argued the certification date should be postponed until all the early ballots are counted.

CNN's Dana Davidsen, Kevin Bohn, Gregory Wallace, Kevin Liptak and Robert Yoon contributed to this report.

Seems West has the lack of respect for voters and a great many other things. The guy has serious mental issues as well. Where was all this concern about the voters when Republican Gov. Rick Scott suppressed the vote by cutting back on early voting in the state of FL, thereby disenfranchising many of those very same voters?? Now West is crying foul, because the vote didn't turn out the way he wanted it too??

Why doesn't this clown just go away? He must be worried about the government check he will no longer get. He could collect unemployment or pension. But, wouldn't make one of part of society that he utterly despises? My bet is this hypocritical idiot would not turn it down.

Is ther any integrity in Florida's voting results? Murphy won. West should be confident. Gore won Florida, too.

Congress would be better off without the toxic Mr West, BUT the things I heard about this race are outright scary. Like Soviet Union type scary. Just because you don't like a politician does not give someone the right to manipulate an election. They would eventually vote this guy out anyway, but stealing it is just wrong.

You know if Scott let Florida have their 14 days of voting instead of cutting it back to 8 this wouldn't be a contest and West would be going home!!Now Scott is calling on an investigation into the supression scam he created, that's like a fox asking the farmer to find out who really ate his chickens ,that assinine ..But that's republicans in all republican led states because they almost all got beaten and it'll be worst come this midterm if these same republicans don't get going and do something for the people, the ones who voted them there!!

FL seems again poised to steal an election from a Dem candidate. Is the state covered by the Voting Rights Act?

This story really should be updated with some of the problems. They double counted votes? The forgot to count hundreds of votes? Amazingly, the County Elections Supervisor had to check into a hospital for "some tests." Is this a 3rd world country or something? Just county the votes. Then West will have nothing to complain about if he loses. If an election that had a candidate losing by over 2,000 votes is changed because there was that much fraud, the County Supervisor needs to go to jail.

It will be good for the nation if this radical obstructionist is defeated. We need people in congress who are problem solvers, not loud mouthed publicity seekers.

Oh please-West is a POOR loser. I think his name calling of his colleagues in Congress is a sign that he shouldn't be representing anyone. He is a lose cannon.

I doubt he can win on recount. Murphy's lead was originally over 1,000 votes. 1000 votes is alot in a district race
