Obama goes Christmas shopping

(CNN) – After millions flocked to superstores for mega-deals on Black Friday, President Barack Obama took part in the third annual Small Business Saturday by stopping at a bookstore near Washington.

The president and his two daughters - Sasha and Malia - departed the White House Saturday afternoon to One More Page Books, a shop in the Washington suburb of Arlington, Virginia.

With his Blackberry in hand, Obama appeared to be looking at a list as he spoke with the store’s owner, Eileen McGervey, according to pool reports.

"Preparation," the president said. "That's how I shop."

Obama gave the clerk a stack of titles, shook hands with employees and walked around the store.

Asked about the so-called fiscal cliff, with its looming budget slicing, by a pool reporter, the president said: "We're doing Christmas shopping…Happy Thanksgiving, folks."

As he came out of the bookstore, he walked up to supporters who were applauding and cheering along two ropelines.

“Aren’t you cold out here?” he asked.

The White House later reported that Obama bought 15 children's books meant to be offered as gifts to family for Christmas.

Last year, the Obamas shopped at a different book store - Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café in the District of Columbia -— on Small Business Saturday, a tradition started by American Express in 2010.

- CNN's Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

Today Republicans criticized President Obama of spending time shopping instead of thinking of ways to help the economy which hasn't recovered yet.

I understand that Romney and Ryan are just giving people little notes saying "stop being a socialist mooch expecting me to give you gifts."

    @jpeagle21 :
George W Bush never finished reading a book let alone visited a B&N! You seem to have done even less reading...

Good for the President and his family. They are donating the books to those with less.
That is what it's all about NOT how much money you have!

To: jpeagle21 ... the press didn't follow President George W Bush to a Barnes & Noble, because he probably
never went to a Barnes & Noble. He probably let his wife, or one of his assistants do it for him.

The man has time for everything except what he should be doing and it's probably because he still has no clue on how to do it and thats running a country. That unless you consider running a country into the ground then he is doing a wonderful job. Back to the social circuit and the heck with the middle east in turmoil, a unemployment rate unheard of and a country divided. The sick of the sickest mentally writing dribble on here about how he is warming their holiday spirits. Tell that to all the families in the last 4 years who lost their homes and wealth and still do not have a job. Tell that to the 47 million on food stamps, Tell that to the families of the 4 dead americans in Benghazi or the many who suffered in the Fort Hood shooting. Doesn't matter as long as you all get your government assistance, your freebies, your entitlements. Yes santa clause is alive and well for you and he lives in the white house.

It is a well known fact that George Bush is illiterate. Note the Little Golden book he was holding upside down while the Trade Center fell.

I AM GALD THAT I HEARTFELT CAMPAIGNED FOR THIS PRESIDENT FOR THIS NATION. He is selfless. Hats off to him.

I think you confusing turnover of a small business , with the profit of the business , or how much the owner pays himself . If the owner of an independent bookstore makes a profit (that is sales minus costs) of over $250,000 per year then they would be extraordinary business people , most would struggle to get a proft of between $50,000-$80,000. They generally keep the doors open because they love books , not to make a fortune.

Hey DT, do you work 24/7? You expect POTUS to? How much vacation time did Dubya take as he murdered tens of thousands and spent trillions on wars engineered by Cheney and his henchmen? Tell the families of the 4000+ US servicemen killed in Iraq that an illiterate facist started a useless war costing them their loved ones. Tell the millions who lost jobs and homes under Bush that he somehow cared. You are right about one thing though, Dubya was not a Santa Claus because he didn't give a rats butt about anyone other than his rich cronies. Your political mentality is one its way out my friend....

You right-wingers are a miserable bunch. If the President hadn't gone out shopping, you'd all be whining about how he's not spending any of his money to help out on small business Saturday. You're ignorance and derangement is a sickening thing to behold.

I'm proud that our President is out shopping at a small business, and a BOOKstore. His actions really do set a model, children and people learn from reading, not from video games or TV... GW always took so much time off at Camp David or his Ranch that the time he spent actually working probably fit into one 4 year term.

ONE GREAT PRESIDENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The GOP is never going to win again unless they stop being the party of ignorant xstian A holes. I too gave thanks on thanksgiving that Obama will continue to be our president, that the GOP is in shambles, and that Romney will now just fade into history.

Rick, you are spot on. (CNN, must be slow news days!) And, we the people ARE paying for his shopping as well as for Moochelle's!!! Does HE really care about small business? I think NOT.

HE only cares about the large corporations that HE can coerce into pumping huge sums of "dolares" into HIS dream projects, i.e.. HIS upcoming lavish inauguration. After HE insults the business community on an almost daily basis; he expects the struggling businesses to to pick up the tab for HIS lavish pretenses. This MAN has no respect for the business community or the citizens of the U.S.

OK, so he goes to the bookstore to buy the book. Did he tell the owner that they better never make over $250K or he is planning to nail them with taxes? $250K is not rich it is upper middle class and that is a threshold that small business owners can reach. Mr. President if you are truly reaching out to small business then you need to raise the ceiling you are putting them under to $400K for a family.

I wonder if he wouldn't mind including a repair to my wheelchair. I spent all of my money, which was about $50, on medical cost and now I cannot afford to fix my chair. Maybe I should look forward to my own expiration date for the holidays. Please, Mr. President... help?
