Could the GOP block Rice for secretary of state?

(CNN) – Some Republican senators have openly stated they would work to block a nomination of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice to the position of secretary of state. But what happens if President Barack Obama decides to nominate her, anyway? CNN National Political Correspondent John King explains.

The Republicans are playing a great game here that many sore losers tend to play. They would really rather see Obama pick John Kerry for SOS because that would open the Senate seat in Massachusetts and they will try their darnest to get Brown back into that seat. Plus if the president decides to pick Kerry over Rice they'll claim a victory saying they forced him NOT to pick her. The GOP needs some sort of victory over Obama because so far nothing they have tried has worked. They are actually forcing him in a way to pick Rice so they can block his pick. This is another war that more than likely they will not win either.

Rice should not be confirmed as Secretary of State. She is too political; too partisan; and she knew preciely what she was doing when she went on all the talk shows a few days before the election – she was assisting Obama's campaign -and she did so while serving as an Ambassador to the UN - totally inappropriate behavior for a diplomat

From an outsider I could tell you that her commits at that time were unfounded. She is nothing more than a puppet and as zero intellect to be Security of State.

Rice is incompetent. Obama should remember Harriet Meiers. Wonder if Obama is sleeping with Rice?

Republicans can continue to do small petty things that only make them look childish and incapable of depth in reason! That's not a way to broaden your base!!! Their base is shrinking ,with time as an ally to democrats. The older generations, and the old way of categorizing people different from themselves is dieing away. Education is saving the day.

Republicans say they are "troubled" by Rice, etc. etc. Honestly, I am very troubled by Sen. McCain, Graham, Corker and the GOP herd that is causing constant issues in our political system. Maybe the democrats should pool their resources and boot them out. Instead on focusing on the issues affecting the middle class, these clowns are being nothing but obsessive obstructionists. First Romney, now the GOP house and senators. Democrats should focus on taking the house back, and increase their senate majority, come next elections.

Republicans are so transparent! They are waging war against Susan Rice to force John Kerry's candidacy for Secretary of State. They have big dreams about running Scott Brown for his seat and recover the lost senate place. Dear Repubs: it's not going to happen. Some honesty could go a long way, if you only tried it.

If they get it done, it's been achieved due to sour grapes over the presidential election.

The President should be able to nominate who ever he thinks would do the best job for America. If Republicans want to have a scape goat and put someone on the cross, why aren't they looking at Senator McCane, C. Rice, Bush, Cheney, and the rest of them that lied to Americans about WMD What about the GIs that have been killed and mained? What about the Repubs that DENIED more funding for embassies? Why not put Cheney on trial for his involvement with Haliburton???> The Republicans lost the election, they should get ver it, but because they can't, they will lose in 2014 as well

Well they'll cetainly try. She's a woman. And she's a minority. And young compared to her colleagues. The GOP TEA Party RINO have a vendetta out against the electorate that gave President Obama a second term.

It is important that the lunacy behind the RIGHT`s attack on Susan Rice be revealed by thw Whitehouse, whether she get`s nominated or not. Too often, the Dems don`t put enough energy into winning the "bumpersticker" communications contest with the GOP and they need to. Make the GOP look like fools to the American public. Don`t give the GOP the benefit of the doubt on anything.

I believe the President only needs 51 Seantors to confirm Rice as Sec of State and he has more than 55 members of the Democratic caucus so he will win the fight. Republicans bluster all they want to no avail but Mr. Obama should totally pimp slap them; both Publically and in the halls of Senatorial power.

Obama and team assembled a great grassroots machine, which I am apart of, to defeat both McCain and Romney. We will defend and support Amb. Rice.

As a voter/citizen of Maine, I will working to put pressure on Sent. Collins, a new, unfounded critic of Amb. Rice. As we said in the campaign, I am all fired up and ready to fight.

Susan Rice is very qualified. Sen. Mccain should be ashamed of himself for saying that Amb. Rice is not bright. Mccain who was last in his graduating class from the US Naval Academy. And by the way what was his position when then National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice was nominated as Secretary of State after lying on behalf of Bush and Cheney that Iraq had Nuclear weapons. Mccain and the republican senators who are against Susan Rice's nomination are the worst hypocrites in modern memory and need to be confronted on national TV.

First off the Senate committee would have to reject the candidate by one vote. Not sure that would happen.
Then in the senate vote Republicans need 60 votes to win.
Whether what she was briefed to say was right wrong or indiferent, she was US ambassador to the UN not a SEC of State employee, nor an insider on its policies nor necessarily in the loop on CIA evaluation reports.
Whatever outstanding questions they ( McCain, Graham, Ayotte,) have about Rice she agreed wiht hindsight her staements on TV shows were misleading... but she was unaware. Whether the exclusion was by the FBI or CIA re al Qaeda links can in no way land on her... FBI CIA maybe.
The conspiracy theories of a Democratic political cover up will never, ever be proved.
Trying to avoid her nomination by the President before the whole investigation is complete is the opposite of innocent until proven guilty means this is unadulterated Republican politcs and an attempted usurpation of presidential power... I wish I could cry treason ( cant) but it is close.
One CNN commentator was correct when she said in summary its not what Rice said or her involvement.
The investigative need is why so few guards, military, CIA (lightly armed) at this consulate; ( I have speculated that Stevens style was part of the reason) especially as the outside people of all kinds were toting militarty grade weapons, including so called friendlies.
Similary why also the " safe house" with more fire power but not all they wanted was and how:-
a ) known to what were eventually identiied FOR SURE as terrorists?
    b) why it took so long for a safe hous force to respond to the consulate and they were complaining of insufficient weapons to go to the consulate.
    c) How they managed eventually to terminate the " terrorist attack" with 2 more lives lost at the safe house?
The rotten answer is they had thier prize the Ambassdor Stevens.
    Amen and great man.
I think McCain, Graham and Ayotte would better spend thier time with colleagues and Democrats on how to fix the fiscal cliff. Then go back over Benghazi failings if any to improve things for the future.
Whatever the outcome of this investigation 4 lives were lost and past is past and any political gain is miniscule and soon forgotten. Never will the loss of these souls or any service man or woman in the military be compensation to families whether what was done was reasonable or done badly or well.
Possibly and hopefully some policies will be helpfully amended but Ambassador Stevens + 3 will be dead and unfortunately we are not perfect and more will follow.

The GOP will do there best to try. And they will look foolish after the country compares Condoleezza Rice with Susan Rice .

    Bagdad Vs Benghazi .

I wouldn't be suprised if Coni gives her support to Susan , just to keep the comparison low key.

Obama should appoint Susan Rice just to let the American public witness first hand how the GOP wastes there time and money.
