Obama to meet with Romney Thursday

(CNN) – President Barack Obama and his former rival Mitt Romney will meet Thursday for their first get-together since the November 6 election, according to a statement from White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.

"On Thursday, Governor Romney will have a private lunch at the White House with President Obama in the Private Dining Room," Carney wrote. "It will be the first opportunity they have had to visit since the election. There will be no press coverage of the meeting."

In his acceptance speech on election night, Obama congratulated Romney on his campaign, and said he was looking forward "to sitting down with Governor Romney to talk about where we can work together to move this country forward."

And at his first post-election press conference, held November 14, Obama said his goal was to set a meeting before the end of the year.

"There are certain aspects of Governor Romney's record and his ideas that I think could be very helpful," he said, specifically citing Romney's leadership of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games.

Romney has mostly stayed out of the spotlight since his Election Night remarks in Boston. He was spotted taking in the latest installment of the "Twilight" movie franchise with his family, and on Thanksgiving shared a photo with his wife Ann on his official Facebook page. Two Romney aides said Wednesday the former GOP nominee will be subletting space at the offices of his son Tagg's investment firm Solamere Capital in Boston. Mitt Romney won't be joining the firm himself, the aides said.

While Romney hasn't made any public appearances after the election, controversial comments he made on a post-election call with top donors were immediately criticized by both Democrats and Republicans.

"What the president, president's campaign did was focus on certain members of his base coalition, give them extraordinary financial gifts from the government, and then work very aggressively to turn them out to vote," Romney said on the call.

Romney, who lost to Obama by 126 electoral votes, said the president courted voters by offering policies – some of them this election year – that appealed to key constituencies.

"With regards to the young people, for instance, a forgiveness of college loan interest was a big gift," Romney said.

Those remarks caused Republicans – including several who are considered likely candidates for the 2016 GOP nomination – to put distance between themselves and their party's former standard bearer.

While in Washington, Romney will also meet with his former running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, a senior adviser to the former GOP nominee told CNN Wednesday.

In 2008, Obama met with Sen. John McCain after defeating him in the presidential election. The pair met at Obama's transition headquarters in Chicago, and issued a joint statement afterwards saying they hoped to work together on challenges such as the financial crisis, creating a new energy economy and protecting the country's security.

CNN's Jim Acosta, Paul Steinhauser and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

Dave, the President, YOUR President is a class act. That is all.
Everyone has something to contribute. Even you. The President is doing what is traditionally done after you whip someone's butt in a general election, he's sitting down with the loser, making him feel like less of a loser; stroking what little ego the loser has left after all of his "friends" have turned and kicked his losing a– to the curb; he's going to listen to him, feed him, and send his losing a– home feeling a little better, and less like a useless loser.
    That is all.

On a more serious note, Romney may indeed have some viable ideas, and what better time to pick his brain than when all of his so-called friends have disowned him? Not saying that President Obama could be this masterful....but , yeah, maybe I am saying that!
    Forward America.

The President is and has again taken the highroad. The mark of a diplomat is to, surprisingly, too be gracious as a winner or a looser. Mr. Obama has once again placed himself above the pettiness of the Republican Party. Well done Sir! Let's hope that for the Countries sake the Republicans can run the radical right out of town.

If things "turn sour" it will be because the Party of No! refuses to work with the President- and that's why the GOP lost. They put party above our country.

Half of the country voted for Mr. Romney, so have some respect, if not for him, at least for those who voted for him. Mr. Obama was very close to saying goodbye to the WH which is not really normal for an incumbent president. Have some decency.

Mr. President, learn from the majority (folks who voted for you). They didn't trust Romney as he didn't trust them by showing them his Tax Returns. Now, as one person, you want to trust Romney whom people didn't trust!! Please give it another thought.

To see the kind of people who voted for whom, just read CNN comments. You can see through them.

I think this is great idea as an example of putting partisan politics aside and showing that they really do care about the welfare of the country. Obama should give Romney a cabinet post. He has proven leadership when it comes to business and would be a good choice for Secretary of Treasury or Commerce.

I'm not sure the America people can afford to pay for the type of lunch Romney prefers. How much caviar and champaign are we talking about here? Since Romney has already stolen so much wealth from the working class wealth producers, perhaps he should pick up the tab.

    "Could this mean Romney 2016?"

After a sit down, breaking bread luncheon with that mean President Obama?

Romney can kiss any reputation he had left within the GOP good-bye.

This lunch meeting is remarkable as it represents fulfillment of two campaign promises at the same time, one of which was made by a candidate who didn't even win!

    Just saying....

Why would Obama meet with Mitt Romney at all? ... According to Romney – Obama won because he gave special gift to certain group: like stop deportation for Hispanic and contraceptive to Woman in Obamacare ..... Why would I meet with a person that dis-guard 47% percent of the American people when you as the President (Obama) is working for 100% percent

This has become standard protocol, nothing new. 24 hours after this meeting, neither man will recall what was said. Just a photo-op and a final cap on the election.
