Source: Obama and Boehner speak for first time in a week

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner spoke on the phone Wednesday afternoon, according to a source familiar with the call.

The conversation, the first between the two in a week, did not result in a breakthrough in the ongoing "fiscal cliff" stalemate.

According to one source familiar with the conversation, Republicans have not agreed to move on tax rate increases for the top 2% of income earners, a point the Obama administration considers non-negotiable.

Poor poor simple-minded Mike, there is never just ONE single issue, one has to look at the BIG PICTURE.

Boehner needs to stop assuming that he speaks on behalf of the GOP. He doesn't. He is giving away the farm.

Obama needs to stop assuming that he speaks on behalf of the Democrats. He doesn't. Not a single Democrat in the Senate supports his budget.

Now let's get down to business as cut $500 billion a year from our budget starting in 2013, with NO tax increases, and nothing off limits.

Mike, I must commend you on your ablility to recant fox news and Mitt Romney talking points verbadum, congrats! I just want to know Mike, since you are a Tea Party patriot, do you support businesses getting tax giveaways to ship jobs overseas, keep YOUR wages low, oil company giveaways, big pharma, big agra, big ethanol giveaways, do you support capital gains and carried interest loopholes, do you support tax breaks for second and third mansions and private jets and yachts? Thats where the big money is at sir. Just remember that when it is you and yours who will get the short end of the stick, Happy Holidays to you and yours even though I fundamentally disagree with your assessment.

Good call Mike. It amazes me that 5% of our country covers 60% of our income taxes and cry baby liberals think they owe more. They don't care because it doesn't hurt them (won't help either). I don't believe that many of them would admit that they are jealous of people who EARN more money than them, but it kind of looks that way. Still can't believe this guy got re-elected after crapping all over the majority of his voters with all of the lies and broken promises from 4 years ago. He is a celebrity, not a president. He needs to resign and go sell sham wows or oxi-clean. What a joke.

I can only hope that Boehner told the President that he is going to get ZERO help from Republicans for his arrogance and reckless leadership of the country....that is what I would say...well, I just did.

If by the 20th Dec 2012, there is no deal, the masses should move to washington and send all members of congress on indefinite leave, withold their salaries, take over congress, hold seatings, pass bills and forward the bills to the president for signature. The peoples power is derived from the constitution-remember "we the people".Until all members of congress sign a pledge to "we the people",they should not be allowed to come back to washington.
There comes a time when, the masses can no longer be taken for a ride and the time has come.

President Obama, Get the Federal Mediators involved so that negotiations with Boehner and the Republicans get their attention. You won the election. Let's get this done so that Americans can have a decent Holiday without all the drama. ENOUGH ALREADY.

Sorry TeaParty Miike. The redumblicans are going down because they don't know how to compromise. They lost this election-will lose bigger if they don't get their act together. Obama WON this, plain & simple. redumblicans want to flee from their pledge to Norquist and are scared to do so–and sorry to say-I hold this as treason to our country. These people were elected to uphold the constitution not some bimbo like Norquist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All I can say is they better get er done!!!!!!!!! No more blaming--come together for the country already............

The president ran with a pledge to raise taxes on the 1%. He was elected. He wants to do what the people elected him to do, raise taxes on the rich. Pretty simple. No political theater form the president. The party of NO continues to say they represent the people. They represent the money that is behind the idea that the failed trickle down theory continues to be supported by the 99%. It is not. Let's go ever the cliff and see who gets the blame. 2014 cannot come soon enough. Vote these teapublicans out and get this country going!

Teaparty dear. We all have "skin in the game" for one thing because unless we get some revenue increases, the spending cuts will be a lot more. Then the retired and disabled and under/un employed, who make up much of the 47% who don't pay federal income tax, will have their benefits cut.

I voted for Romney and I support the Repubs in the House, but we NEED something NOW or many of us (myself included) WILL lose our jobs and our families will be the ones paying for it. JUST COME TO SOME COMPROMISE!

@TeaParty Mike: Stop watching FOX. try a real news organization. If the congress had not gone home, they certainly could have passed an emergency bill for all those making under $250K .. Obama would have signed it... if he hadn't he would have to spend his last 2 years with Repubs running everything. The way it is now, he will have comeplete control in 2014 because the house repubs have decided they have nothing to do.

The GOP "leadership" cares not one whit about our country or its people. It cares less about the domestic and global economies.

What the despicable despots DO care about is extending the declared war on our President and our very way of life. This group of un-American, anti-American officials will not be swayed by fact or reason.

The GOP extremists are driven by self-serving, power-grabbing greed. Any destruction and degradation of our country lays at the feet of these thugs: Kyl, Boehner, McConnell, Graham, ad nauseum.

    Case Closed.

You may disagree with the President's platform or his process but you are show complete lack of class to call thise who voted for him as fools. I do not agree with everything done by either party; however we are each entitled to our own opinions. If your approach is to blast those who disagree with you, then you will never be respected. And, you show your ignorance when you cannot understand why he is not willing to accept a bandaid on this issue rather than a cure.

Not telling the truth.Everyone pays federal and state tax that works. What you get back is after taking tax deductions and overpayment.Mostly beneficial to fed refunds.Everyone should pay their fair share.Rock do. Not from the start.Own a business of one-tax rate before dedutions 15%.You do the math.I glad Pres.Obama is speaking for everyone.

The republican doomsday plan did absolutely nothing about the deficit and only differed from the fiscal cliff by cutting social programs instead of cutting our "defense" budget.

It should NOT be news that the President of the United States and the Speaker of the House have a telephone conversation. This is a sad commentary on the state of dysfunction in the US Government in at least 2 of the 3 branches.....

President Obama says he wakes up every single day, thinking about us. LMAO what a joke. The president's actions and how he's actually spending his time tell a much different story. A Government Accountability Institute's study showed that Obama's actual total work time in his 1st 3 1/2 yrs in office spent on the economy & jobs was a WHOPPING 4%!! WOW! Not only that people but almost 6% of his time was spent on his golf game, this yr alone as of july already 107 fundraising events and NO meetings with his jobs council and 1 cabinet meeting. Now i dont know about you but this sure dont sound like a man worried about us. AND THEY VOTE HIM BACK IN!!! This is crazy!!

Obama has had 4yrs to do sumthing & did nothing but spend his time working to get re-elected, in 2012, President Obama has spent 24 total hours in economic meetings of any
kind! The training wheels are off now people and he said the buck stops with him so when this term is over and we are in WORSE shape guess what.... I guess it will be the republicans fault right?? WRONG!! We had our chance to get sum1 in there to actually do sumthing and change the players in this game but noooooooo we put the same players in the game expecting a different outcome, how dumb is that? Sorry but your gonna get what you voted for, alot more of nothing so i dont understand why everyone is so upset. Just a thought.

teaparty mike if he allowed the tax cut for the middle class and not the raise for the rich it wouldnt balance out down the line and we would fall right over the cliff so Obama is right in what hes doing GET YOUR FACTS
