Longtime Texas congressman Jack Brooks dead at 89

(CNN) – Jack Brooks, a former U.S. congressman from Texas, died Tuesday night in Beaumont Baptist Hospital after a sudden illness, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

At 89, Brooks passed away two weeks shy of his 90th birthday.

New York Poll: Clinton yes, Cuomo no, on White House runs

(CNN) – A majority of New Yorkers say they would like to see Hillary Clinton run for president in 2016, according to a new poll.

And while a Siena College Research Institute survey indicates that most New Yorkers think that Andrew Cuomo, their governor, is doing a good job in office and are prepared to re-elect him in 2014, a plurality don't want him to run for the White House in 2016.

CNN: Ryan encourages GOP to focus on the future in first major post-election speech
U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan urged his party to advance a forward-looking vision in his first high-profile speech since his failed bid for the White House alongside Mitt Romney. The Wisconsin Republican also acknowledged that that he and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who would speak at the dinner and receive an award, are seen as 2016 presidential contenders themselves.

Gingrich's 'fiscal cliff' lessons from budget battles with Clinton

(CNN) - Newt Gingrich, a former Republican House speaker who knows something of negotiating with a Democratic president over budget issues, laid out his "fiscal cliff" advice to Republicans Tuesday on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight:” if necessary, go over the cliff without a deal.

"I am frankly not at all encouraged by what I see and a little bit worried by it," he said, assessing the negotiations - apparently now in impasse - in Washington to avert the tax increases and spending cuts which lay ahead in the new year.
