Democrats try to stop Michigan 'right-to-work' law

(CNNMoney) - Several prominent Michigan Democrats met with Republican Gov. Rick Snyder on Monday in an effort to convince him not to sign the "right-to-work" bill expected to pass the legislature.

The legislation, which cleared some legislative hurdles last week, is expected to get final approval Tuesday. It would allow workers at union-represented employers to not pay dues even though the union would be bargaining on their behalf.

Unions are dinosaurs. Time to relegate them to the dust bin of history. They are nothing but organized extortion clubs that are driving companies and states bankrupt with their insane demands. They got greedy and killed the goose that laid the golden egg.

The Holy Grail for GOPhers: neutering the UAW. And now it's going to happen, and not with a bang but with a whimper. You should've voted in the last mid-terms, Democrats.

Donna, an very uninformed opinion, this is a power grab by repubs. right to work states are among the lowest wage earning . most unions are not what the stereotype potray, why are rich guys for it and people in their respective industries for it? its ot just about high wages, i make 3 or4 dollars an hour more than most, but still not all in my area, its about collective bargaining, if you dont recognize the fact that we worked hard for rights should not be so easily dismissed, unions are what brought a higher standard of living for many, and are heavily involved in local charities, and protect you from being wrongfully terminated, does not mean you cant get fired, just for no good reason

Wonder how many union 'haters' would be willing to take those "former" union jobs if they paid minimum wage and no benefits......or are they wanting the union pay and all of the benefits but have "someone else" pay for the cost of negotiating the contracts.......
You can bet your butt if the unions are gone, there will be NO contracts, NO good pay NOR benefits, just profits and bonuses for the management

get rid of the unions and there would be no problems.unions are out dated and only give money to those who know they dont have to work hard because the unions will protect them.many workers do there work but many take off and still get payed drink on the job and dont care because the unions wont let them get fired.its time for right to work.

Democrats shouldn't try to stop Michigan's right to work law... this is Michigan's fault. This what they get for hiring Republicans or not showing up at midterm elections.
The people get the government they deserve!
If Michigan didn't want right to work laws they should have voted Democrat!

Unions are the last hurdle to complete servitude. rich want this, workers should know better, tell me how this creates jobs? it does not! how does this protect collective bargaining? it does not, yet republicns run ads saying exactly that, why cant they tell the truth? and why is big money backing this if it is so good for the average joe?. when is the last time big money spent money representing you? unions are not big money dems were not the ones pushing citizens united, the single most devastating blow to democracy, like the last election? adelson gave over 100 million, thats a 50 k a year job, for 2000 years

While the GOP "autopsies" its loss in the most recent election, the Michigan GOP is doing everything it can to ensure blue collar America won't vote for them-ever.

    Does this make sense?

The GOP is still so busy trying to rule for just the 2% that they likely won't notice the error of their ways until they lose a few more elections.

The Michigan Republicans have already broken state law with this law because they never held the required minimu 5 days of public comment. One day they simply introduced the bill into the State House and voted on it.

"Right-to-work", what an oxy moron. This is another conservative power grab to take more jobs, money, benefits and worker protections away from us. The Republicans won't stop until all of us who have to earn a paycheck every week are relegated to a serf status.

Yeah Greg, you do understand what this is about. hostess blamed the union for their current position, but some know, the managment that is pushing for this closing, are set to get very generous severance packages, aka golden parachute, get facts befor you vote, if not before you speak. people are being sold on that they will get my wages, without a union, thats why employers want this, they wont pay you decent wages without collective bargaining. once you have been around the negotiations, you know who has the money, and they will always tell you theycant afford it, just like big oil cant afford to update their refineries, yet post 11.8 billion in profit, in a three month span, poor guys, how do they eat, why even work for that price right?

Eventually, the people of Michigan will challenge the Michigan Governor and vote on this. Michigan being mostly an Automotive state, I say the people of Michigan will vote to uphold the Auto Unions.

Phil, thats the exact uninformed ideaology the rich want you to have, unions do not protect workers caught drinking, that is just a union thing, hardly, the opposite is what ive experienced, this job has more skilled, and responsible employees than any of the dozen i worked in my life, RTW states have lowest wages, union enroolment and household income rise and fall together. ive worked at two union shops. collective bargaining is what bought us out of poverty, they are disappearing, and good wages with them.sad but true. anyone who says they would rather work without union representation, has never had any

It sounds like Snyder's a little mad he let Mitt Romney lose his home state. I hope he enjoys his power while it lasts.

@James Bond – does it cost companies more or less to hire people represented by unions? If you say "less", please check your inputs and circle back. If you say "more", you will understand why companies are deciding to move their operations overseas in search of cheaper labor. Unions cause widgets to cost more money – which in turns makes your dollar buy less.

The question is why would the governor stop this? He is a Republican which begs the question: which business interest is he beholden to now? There are many people elected office that were "financed" by some source. Which is this governor's?

There will be some that view this as a gain for the workers. They couldn't be more misguided if they tried. The workers lose, while the companies gain. After the companies gain the upper hand, they become more and more greedy. The workers get pushed further and further down the ladder, while the fat cats get fatter and fatter. The republicans love this because they get to keep their pockets lined with corporate cash.

Danny, if cheaper labor results is cheaper products, explain to us why Nike shoes cost $200, IPad's hundreds of dollars, etc.

Because in the search for ever increasing profits, lower costs (wages) equal more profits. But never in lower prices for their goods and services.

Hows those comments danny, why are nikes so expensive they use the cheapest labor on the planet? and how much profit is that per shoe, the use this money on lobbyist, to do just this thing, when is enough enough. greed is the single most motivating factor. sending jobs overseas does not mean the company cant afford our labor, just dont care about fellow americans when there is a profit to be had, bad for country, good for them, sound familiar
