Obama remains committed to assault weapons ban, White House says

Washington (CNN) - The White House said President Barack Obama supports reinstatement of a federal ban on assault weapons - a position he took in the 2008 campaign but failed to press during his first term.

"It does remain a commitment of his," presidential spokesman Jay Carney told reporters as the nation reeled from a mass shooting in Connecticut that mainly killed school children.

Why is he treading lightly. Ask for the assault weapons ban and it either gets voted up or voted down. We have seen too many of these mass killings – it's time to do something!

Today is a day of mourning....a day of focus....a day to search for who we are as a people and what we value. Cancel all public events ,sporting and otherwise. We don't need diversions,we need to feel this moment so we never experience this again.

No. None were killed, so stop with the misinformation. Know why none were killed? Because he didn't have a gun.

What about the Constitution? We have a 2nd Amendment. I guess it's an afterthought these days. Maybe we should ban hammers or kitchen knives too. People use firearms to kill people just like knives or hammers. Banning those types of firearms is not the answer and it won't stop people from using them to do horrifying and heartless things to other people.

No average citizen ....NOT ONE.... needs an automatic assualt weapon. Get rid of them! How can you defend this craziness when you look at the lives destroyed almost on a regular basis. Is this one more thing we should just get used to hearing about. ENOUGH! God bless those families and class mates. This breaks my heart.

Not a gun issue, it's a crazy person issue. Crazy/bad people will find a way to hurt/kill people, with or without a gun.

The NRA is just WAITING for this...in fact their president had been predicting that President Obama was going to try to change gun laws. Now they use their best tactic to get support which is FEAR..tell their supporters that Obama is going to take away everyone's guns (something he can't do) and then the gun sales go up. You get the right wing nutjobs like Hank Williams, Jr and Ted Nugent holding rallies all due to fear and misinformation. Truth is yes there are some lefties that want every gun in America to vanish, but a majority are not only in favor of firearm ownership but want better background checks of who can purchase them. Plus why does an average citizen need a AK-47 with clips unless they plan to kill people. You don't go skeet shooting or hunting with them. But if you bring up that subject you are a "bleeding heart liberal" and want to deny ALL gun ownership.
