Huckabee: Lack of religion in classroom leads to violence in schools

(CNN) - Responding to the deadly mass shooting Friday in Newtown, Connecticut, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said new laws regulating guns won't deter such shootings, linking a lack of religious discussion in the classroom to increased violence in schools.

"We ask why there's violence in our school but we've systematically removed God from our schools," Huckabee said on Fox News. "Should we be so surprised that schools have become such a place of carnage? Because we've made it a place where we don't want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability."

"That we're not just gonna have to be accountable to the police if they catch us but one day we stand before a holy God in judgment. If we don't believe that, then we don't fear that," he said.

"People are going to want to pass new laws," Huckabee continued. "This is a heart issue ... laws don't change this kind of thing."

Huckabee made similar comments following the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, earlier this year saying violent acts should not be a surprise considering the removal of religion from public forums.

"We don't have a crime problem, or a gun problem, or even a violence problem. What we have is a sin problem," he said after the July shooting on Fox News. "And since we've ordered God out of our schools and communities; the military and public conversations... we really shouldn't act so surprised when all hell breaks loose."

Friday morning a gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and opened fire killing 20 students and six adults before apparently killing himself. The tragedy has intensified the debate over gun laws in the U.S.

I was raised a Christian and I will forever believe in those religious tenants. This is NOT A MATTER of religion. This is a matter of mental illness. So I guess it stands to reason, the GOP/Tea folks push the idea they need to take over our schools and teach the kids religion so that when they get murdered, we are all assured the little ones will be in the bossom of our Lord in the after life. Bologna!

CNN you are failing miserably. This is a faux news story, right behind a commerical brought to us courtesy of the NRA. Buy more guns and pray the little children have been taught enough religion to afford them an afterlife in glory

No one should take Mike Huckabee serious when he tries to blame this horrific event upon atheists. He seems to be uneducated since he seems to forget about Muslim terrorists or the Christian crusades. And Hitler, Stalin, and Mao weren't atheist! Not one person in history has committed murder in the name of atheism (which is as much a religion as anti-astrology), and it won't take anyone long to find murderers who did it in the name of some religion.

Ah, that explains why the Middle East is so peaceful; they have plenty of religion in their schools!

What we don't have is enough parents who have enough time to devote to their kids, usually because both parents have to work.

PRAY THE MURDERS AWAY. Even though the biggest mass killing at a school in the US was way before religion was pushed out of schools.

Ignorance, insensitivity, hypocrisy knows no bounds for the Party of GOP/Tea vangelicals. Absolutely incredible these people believe that a lack of religion in schools is cited as the reason this occurred. A total lack of empathy for the parents that lost their babies. Listen Mikey.....Its possible these parents and their victim children were devote members of their church. the genius and intellect of the GOP/tea-tards is mind numbing.

The problem is crazy people having access to guns! Guns are serious things so a more serious process to acquire them is needed. If you're crazy, no matter how much god you are subjected to you will do crazy things. If he's suggesting similar to Michelle Bachman but in this case praying the crazy away I guess it's worth a shot, no pun intended!

Translation: God is so petty he'd allow these children to be killed because people weren't giving him enough attention in schools? Keep your God – he's apparently a monster.

Huckabee's theory certainly explains why more secular countries like the Netherlands, UK, etc. have such major problems with violence, right? Except these less religious countries have a vanishingly small per-capita death rate from violence, as compared to the US. Major fail on your theory, Mike! Better luck next time.

What an insensitive baffoon! His party, the GOP/Tea Tards never cease to amaze. This phoney doesn't know God's plan for each on of the little babies that lost their lives. There is no way the God I serve would say, .....because you guys don't have religion in schools, I'm going to allow this carnage on the little ones. ....Uh? What?

I have nothing but respect for everyone that commits their lives to the ministry of the gospel, but stupid is stupid and "God is not mocked" ever....This guy is a phoney.

So taking reasonable steps to help staunch the flow of guns and stepping back our gun culture ("more guns are the solution") will not deter this, but imposing Christianity on people will? Keep going Mike, won't be too long before your side is completely irrelevant and it will be easier to stand up to the NRA.

Huckabee, you would try to use this tragedy for political gains.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure pelosi will do the same.

"Guns don't kill people. Right wing nut jobs with guns kill people."
We don't need to outlaw guns. We need to outlaw nut jobs.
Of course, that might put half the congress (both parties) behind bars or in padded rooms.
But would that really be a bad thing?

Obviously, Mr. Huckabee does not believe in "responsible parenting".
Whatever happened to parents teaching responsibility in the home?
And BTW, I believe this shooter was mentally ill – BIGTIME. So no amount of religious teaching in any school would have cured this guy of his mental problems.

So if you have religion in schools you will never suffer from mental illness?

It never ceases to amaze me how people like Huckabee stand on their soap box about religion when some thing like this happens in our society but fail to apply Christian theology when it comes to providing assistance to the least amongst us in our society. By the way, he is more than likely one of those that's running around say that the POTUS is trying to take away our rights to bear arms. Yeah, like we need assault weapons, for what?

I have written a couple of blogs, and tried to explain what is being said in this artical, but I feel these blogs are falling on deaf ears. No matter what some other people may say, JESUS is our LORD and SAVIOR," NOT OBAMMA" If we are to solve any of the problems that plague us, we will have to return to the principles on which this nation was founded.

A sin problem? Huckabee would be a great leader of the inquisition.
BTW: wonder why we don't see more of this in northern Europe? They don't even go to church, so according to this "analysis" it should be way worse.

This kind of incendiary and cruel line of thinking should be as illegal as shouting "FIRE" in a crowded theater. "Christians" like Huckabee do NOTHING to add to the discourse, but only to twist a knife in the victims and survivors. Shame on him, and people like him, for using a tragedy to advance his political and religious leanings and to make more MONEY from his sheep! Sickening.

It is this type of right wing thinking that will prevent the Nation from confronting the real issues. Why do average American citizen need military style assault weapons? WHY DOES the right want anyone,,and everyone walking around armed as if the nation is at war?,,Funny how as long as gun violence is in the inner city, where young black men, or Hispanics are killing each other,, not one of you gives a damn,,, but my lord how you sing for help when the victim is white.
Now let me say this what happened yesterday is one of the saddest days in American history...But everyday in America,, there are more people killed by guns,, that the sad deaths that happened yesterday. One death by guns, is one too many,,it is time to change the laws to insure that no one , no family member should get a call that they have lost a family member due to some out dated,,, NRA supported law.

Sure. Because every child raised by an atheist, agnostic or other persons not involved in organized religion ALL become killers, and every child raised by a Jew, Christian, or Muslim NEVER kills anybody EVER.

Sure. You just keep believing that Huckabee.

And here's another food for thought: I've often heard my Christian peers talk about those who "got away from God" as the reason they committed a crime in trying to explain why a fellow Christian did something horrible. If people can "turn away from God" or "backslide" or, like myself, change religions or become agnostic or atheist, doesn't this mean that putting religion in schools is futile? Saying that a lack of religion in schools generates crime implies that those inculcated in religion will somehow never change their mind, yet clearly people do. I renounced Christianity when I finally read the bible from page 1 to its very last page. Obviously, having me raised religiously did not set my beliefs in stone, and becoming agnostic did not make me a criminal. There are also plenty of children raised by nonbelievers that are perfectly fine adults and are not criminals.
