(CNN) - Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy called for federal legislators to act on gun control legislation in the wake of shootings at the Sandy Hook Elementary School and said laws could have been in place which may have prevented this shooting.
"Do I think Washington, D.C., needs to get its act together and enact stricter gun control laws at the federal level?" he asked. "You bet I do."

Speaking at a press conference in the state's capitol, the Connecticut Democrat said he was encouraged by President Barack Obama's comments on the matter.
"These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change. We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true," Obama said at a vigil in Newtown, Connecticut Sunday night. "No single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world, or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. But that can't be an excuse for inaction. Surely, we can do better than this."
A White House official said the president had discussions with Vice President Joe Biden, some members of his cabinet, and seniors White House staffers about how the country can respond to the tragedy. The cabinet members included Attorney General Eric Holder, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
Malloy said, "The public policy debate is already playing out at the national level and if Connecticut or I can be a voice of assistance in that matter, we are as Connecticut citizens [and] I as the governor, prepared to enter that debate as well. But my focus right now is on helping our community and our state get through this very terrible and difficult time."
He expressed the need for both further legislation and more "from a mental health perspective to reach out to kids and families who are obviously in trouble."
Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union," Malloy told chief political correspondent Candy Crowley, "One can only hope that we'll find a way to limit these weapons that really only have one purpose."

I am through reading and commenting on ANY articles related to this shooting or guns. Nothing will change so why bother?
everyone pointing fingers at the adam l who open fired in conn school nobody knows what happen not even the police people saying they dont want prayer in school ok then how can people fix these types of problems before it happen in schools and in the malls
YOU PEOPLE IN THE U.S. HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH GUNS. Ban all guns that shoot multiple rounds in seconds. Never mind if the killer was sick or not, of course he had some mental problems, but if did not access to those kind of weapons, there would be less dead. Until you people get that gun mentality out of your head, there will be more of the same happening.
Nobody knows the horror those children suffered and I pray they will speak from the arms of God about gun control. Will we be listening to their voices or will we ignore them?
Good job, Malloy. It is high time that sensible people stop ceding the gun control argument to the gun nuts.
By the way, if you didn't take the time to see the President's speech at Newton this weekend, please do so - emotional, profound, and on-point. I can only hope changes actually occur to prevent at least SOME of these senseless tragedies going forward.
Too much controversy over the weapons used here and too little empathy for the victims and their grieving families. This is a nightmare of the greatest magnitude for all who are involved and I think everyone should take a few moments to think best wishes for them (pray if you will). The perpetrator will never use a gun against anyone again, so why he had them, how he got them etc. are mute points. Guns are a way of American life as is violence, promiscuity, disrespect, political pandering and rampant prescriptiion and illegal drug use. So where do the lawmakers start their banning process?
Perhaps one of the stenographers could explain how banning the Bushmaster when the kid had two 10 round semi-automatic pistols on him would have prevented this nightmare. Please, Libs think through this and use logic not emotion. Here it is, ask yourself whether your solution would have prevented the massacre?
