This country needs "gun people control." That's what it needs. Since it has been demonstrated that they cannot exhibit responsibility to accept what some of our more reckless gun laws do in this country, then it is time to force control onto the "gun people."

@Rudy NYC. What? Your statement doesn't even make sense. What we need is for the existing gun laws to be better enforced from state to state and mental illness checks before being issued a permit. New gun owners should be required to go a training course on how to properly handle and store a weapon before the purchase. But, this will only help those that acquire their weapons legally and have enough self control to follow the training once they are home. This again will do nothing for those that illegally purchase weapons.

@Monk – The recent proliferation of mass shootings and increased violent crimes invovling guns can traced to the expiration of gun laws and succesful challenges to them.

Requiring "new gun owners to go to a training course" is an example of "gun people control", but one that I think goes in the wrong direction and misses the mark. We need laws on the books that hold gun owners more accountable for the purchases and collections.

Food for thought. Why are guns so easy to purchase illegally? Because they are so easy to purchase legally.

Most crimes are not purchased with illegally purchased guns. Here in NYC, most violent crimes involving fire arms show that the weapons were legally purchased in other states and then brought across state lines to NYC. In fact, most gun violence is committed with legally purchased weapons. Owning a gun makes you nearly 20 times more likely to be killed by gun violence. That's worse than smoking cigarrettes.

Let's face it, if you're nuts, and you want to kill lots of people, there is no easier place in the civilized world than the USA to be able to do it. The more barriers you can put up to these people from obtaining weapons that can be used to mass murder the less likely they will do it. Either they will just give up, or they will be caught because of suspicious activity. It's just way too easy for people right now to take the country by surprise.

There needs to be a more aggressive move to get the guns off the streets. I agree that there needs to be more done to have those applying for weapons permits to have psychological testing. There also needs to be some assurances that only the responsible adults in a house that has weapons will have access to them such as a gun vault. If that were the case, that might have prevented the CT shooting. An ordinary civilian doesn't need an assault style weapon; who hunts with that?

The liberal left has stooped to a new low. Riding the deaths of 20 babies to advance their political agenda of gun control.
They cry not so but they also say that they never let a good crisis pass without pushing their goals.

  7. The REAL Truth...

This is not rocket science folks! Easy access to and massive proliferation of our "gun culture" coupled with 2nd AM legal challenges have ensured that tragedies such as this and the recent deaths in Connecticut are going to continue to happen. Consider it collateral damage, a by-product of our gun-toting, wild-west, mine's bigger than yours, I have the right to defend myself forum.

Judging by the deafening silence coming from stage right, its' pretty obvious that the right wing just simply doesn't give a hoot. Instead of pity, the right offers up ideas like, "the teachers shoulda' been armed."

The mother was armed and all of her guns didn't help her. In fact, her guns, her reckless use of them, and all of her other reckless, LAWFUL, behaviors with her guns didn't help anyone.

A gun is an inanimate object. Inanimate objects do not kill people. People kill people. We need to understand this is all media hype, and gun control is impossible. Think about it.

    Rudy,
Even if all the guns disappeared today, mass murders will still happen.

    Rudy,
Even if ALL guns, military and personal, disappear today, mass murder will still happen. People bent on murder will do it. I seem to remember in Oklahoma, a whole bunch of people were killed and no gun was used.

If no conversation now when? We need to address issues when they arise or they don't get addressed. This will no be resolved today or tomorrow or in 5 years....but it can begin to get better with conversations divulging ideas ....pretending It's not a problem and saying people kill people, and the guy was crazy and cars kill people is sticking you head in the sand. Responsible people address problems and to say we don't have a problem is wrong.

Rudy NYC, please give me examples of Criminals who obey the law. Legislating against guns is not the fix. Enforcing the law is.

We don't need to have new immigration laws. Illegal immigrants are not following the laws anyway. We just need to enforce the laws on the books.

It is quite funny to see how conservatives views on things like government control change per the issue. We didn't need new voting laws either. We just needed to enforce the laws already on the books. But you were told to fight for those.

Let me repeat myself. "Gun OWNER Control" It is time to impose laws that hold the owners more responsible for the disposition of their weapons.

If it is illegal for me to allow my 12 year old to drive my automobile, then why is it not illegal for me to allow someone without a gun license to have access to, or use, my weapons?

Guess what? IF we got rid of all guns today, that would be one less method of mass murder. Is that not a good thing? Probably not as the ends doesn't justify the means. Nor is that what anyone is suggesting.

Guess what else? If there is another OKC type event, it probably won't be using fertilizer. Because we were smart enough to start tracking large fertilizer sales to non-farming folks. I don't recall the farming lobby getting upset. And other types of explosives are also monitored. Try and google how to make a bomb and don't be surprised to hear the sound of heavy boots kicking in your door.
