(CNN) – It’s one of those legislative showdowns where every vote could count and any vote not cast could be decisive.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called on Saturday for Hawaii’s Democratic governor to appoint “with due haste” a successor to the late Sen. Daniel Inouye, then the body’s most senior member, who died Monday at age 88.
(CNN) – Rep. Tom McClintock, R-California, uses an analogy to explain why he supported Plan B, the alternative to a fiscal cliff deal proposed by House Speaker John Boehner, then scrapped because not enough House Republicans supported it.
“If a lifeguard sees 10 swimmers drowning off his beach and can only reach nine of them to save them, it doesn't mean that he's drowned the 10th one,” McClintock said.
(CNN) - President Barack Obama spoke Friday about the fiscal cliff with House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid before the three men - and the rest of Congress - left town for a long weekend. They'll return after Christmas to pick up where they left off.
Here's a look at the progress and the setbacks in the talks this past week.
(CNN) - President Obama will attend the final memorial service for the late Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii on Sunday, the White House announced.
The service will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Among those buried there are 32 Medal of Honor recipients and at least one former senator.
(CNN) - In the final shopping weekend before Christmas, who will spend more on gifts: husbands or wives?
A new poll shows men will outspend the ladies, and will do so by a significant margin.
Washington (CNN) - For National Rifle Association Vice President Wayne LaPierre and many other pro-gun Americans, the task is clear: The best way to protect children from becoming victims of a slaughter like the one seen last week in Newtown, Connecticut, is to make sure every school in America has "qualified armed security."
For President Barack Obama, many Democratic leaders and a slight majority of the American public, the solution starts with tougher legislation on assault weapons, universal background checks and limits on high-capacity magazines, the first steps needed to begin to make it harder to get at the kinds of firearms that kill thousands of Americans each year.
(CNN) - President Barack Obama continued on Saturday a four-year Christmas tradition of thanking the U.S. military servicemen and women in his weekly address.
"The war in Iraq is over. The transition in Afghanistan is under way. After a decade of war, our heroes are coming home. And all across America, military families are reuniting," he said. "So this week, let's give thanks for our veterans and their families."
(CNN) - It was clear from House Speaker John Boehner's weekly address on Saturday that the fiscal cliff negotiations with President Barack Obama weren't going anywhere soon.
Both men left Washington on Friday, leaving the looming spending cuts and tax increases for after Christmas.
