(CNN) - Call it a bigger, bolder version of the deadline-driven congressional stalemates over taxes and spending that have come to define Washington dysfunction of the past two years.
The latest edition of political "blinksmanship" pits President Barack Obama and Democrats against Speaker John Boehner and Republicans on how to avoid the fiscal cliff - automatic tax increases for everyone and deep spending cuts including the military that will be triggered in the new year without an agreement.
Every Congressman who signed the "Nordquist Pledge" should be tried for treason. They are elected to office by the people and swear an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution, not some jerk-wad lobbyist or some uber-rich elitist base they pander to. That only accounts for .1% of their vote after all ....
And the GOP wins again - the tenuous progress our ecnomomy is making, no thanks to them AT ALL, once again falls victim to their games, that they hope we will blame on Obama. Well I got news for them, there was an election a few weeks back and we told them in no uncertain terms their games are over.
When the dictator demands, is unwilling to make any compromise, and indeed seeks to deceive you that he even wants a deal at all, you should realize..........no deal is possible.
Grover is a man so married and committed to the notion of taxes being the enemy that he is completely unable to see past his delusion. Taxes are not inherently bad, although no one wants them too high; what's too high, well there's the problem.
Our economy did ok in the fifties and sixties when taxes were extremely high compared to now. But, in those days there weren't as many millionaires who hate paying them. President Reagan poisoned the Kool Aid and Grover drank allot!
He should be ignored, as should all of the ideologues on both sides.
We need to start electing smart people who care about the future, not people "committed to principle"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! on oour leaders in government (bar none). They have known for 4 years that this fiscal conclusion was coming on Jan 1 2013 and haven't done a thing about it. Now with mere days left they all go on vacation and hold the american people and economy hostage, paralizing business decisions, creating havac, putting the gains on the economy at risk. Itxs not enough that they designed their own health care system (unique to them alone) and a retirement system outside the federal employees (and of course much more liberal), now they want to screw with our system with huge cuts in benefits in Medicare and SS. Bainor says cut benefits off at 85, then what? All the middle income and poor who are lucky enough to still be living are legislated to die because they can't live on charity alone. So here we are, right in the midst of the holiday season, without resolution and our leaders, because they haven't done their job are allowed and get paid for a vacation. I say no one goes on vacation nor gets paid until there is an agreement on thiese issues. I think that a good standard for our government is "do your job or no pay". Our economy in the real wourld is based on that standard, why shouldn't our leaders have to perform too.. Gosh, there is a novel idea! I find it personally discussing that for the pay they get and the benefits, they forget they are OUR employees, voted by us, and paid by us to do a JOB, not place themselves on pedestal and give themselves a cushey set of benefits and pay raises that exceed the other federal employees, then doon't perform and get the job done.
Republicans apparently NEVER had any desire to help America out of the financial crisis they played a significant role in creating. They are too blinded by their so-called "principles" to do anything for anyone they haven't pledged to. I have no clue what their motivation is at this point unless they wish to go down in history as the most hated and inept political party in History. If that is the case they are doing a wonderful job at it!
