'Marriage penalty' could make costly return

New York (CNNMoney) – The return of the so-called marriage penalty could cost many couples more than $2,000 in higher 2013 taxes if Congress doesn't get its act together and fix the fiscal cliff.

As a result of the Bush tax cuts, married couples get a standard deduction that's exactly twice that of individuals. And the income ranges for the 10% and 15% tax brackets are also doubled. Prior to 2001, many married couples had paid a "penalty" because their standard deduction and income tax brackets were less than twice those of singles.

The return of the marriage penalty. One would think that the same people who claim to stand for religious and moral values, traditional marriage, and low taxes would be against the marriage penalty. Strangely enough they're not, though, because it is more useful as a means to funnel wealth out of the middle class.

Some interesting news has broken in the wake of the latest push for gun control by President Obama and Senate Democrats: Obama sends his kids to a school where armed guards are used as a matter of fact.

The school, Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC, has 11 security officers and is seeking to hire a new police officer as we speak.

If you dismiss this by saying, "Of course they have armed guards - they get Secret Service protection," then you've missed the larger point.

The larger point is that this is standard operating procedure for the school, period. And this is the reason people like NBC's David Gregory send their kids to Sidwell, they know their kids will be protected from the carnage that befell kids at a school where armed guards weren't used (and weren't even allowed).

Shame on President Obama for seeking more gun control and for trying to prevent the parents of other school children from doing what he has clearly done for his own. His children sit under the protection guns afford, while the children of regular Americans are sacrificed.

Only the idiotic government makes is more expensive to do what is best for society and families. Liberal politicians do not believe in marriage so anyway they can suck taxes out of the citizens is okay.

Isn't that a private school? If you wish your kids educated in that type of environment, then I suggest home schooling or a private school, one that uses underground bunkers for classrooms.

It would've been nice to keep the tax breaks for working folks, married or otherwise.

Not the end of the world, though. We have a deficit problem, after all: gotta pay our bills. Right, Tea Partiers?

Do you really live in NYC??? I thought NYC public schools had armed police on the premises? Aren't they euphamistically called "Resource Officers" in order to pretend they are not there as armed guards?

Democrats have been pushing to end the Bush Tax Cuts so I say give Democrats what they want and get rid of the Bush Tax Cuts even if it means more taxes for the middle class. Democrats this year have demonstrated to not have a true understanding of taxes, how business run.

It is time that we pay for our republican created national debt. $12 trillion for unfunded wars, tax breaks, TARP, and a near depression with record unemployment. Republicans have created a depression, a near depression, and a deep recession.

In an earlier post, Nanny State Ray pointed out that many companies from the blue states are relocating in red states because of the right to work laws. Yet, many companies are leaving red nanny states and moving to Mexico and China because the work force in the south leaves a lot to be desired.

Does spending what you take in also include taking no more than what you contribute? Red states are notorious the leading offenders when it comes to taking in more federal dollars than what they contribute....all so that their GOP leaders can brag about their lack of state income taxes.
