NRA president: Schools should have choice on how to arm

(CNN) - National Rifle Association President David Keene said Thursday that schools across the country should decide how best to defend students and faculty.

"Some will want police officers there. Others of them will want private security guards," he said in a CNN interview. "There may be some place they want volunteers to do it. We're willing to work with everybody on those questions."

With the exception of Cho(VA Tech), maybe we should start profiling white men between the ages of 15-25. They're primarily the ones who commit these mass shootings/domestic terrorism. I know this will cause a stir, but hey, it is what it is. I just call it like I see it. As far as the schools go, armed guards/police aren't going to stop someone strapped to a T, who has a plan & is hellbent on carnage.

Ah, no you don't Don't back down now, pal. You made some remarks a week ago, and now every Republican coward in the country is backing them up. Did you finally realize that your suggestion to require armed guards was perceived as openly self-serving? Eh? Whatever happened to an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? Hmm?

I see police officers in front of or near most public schools where I live. I have two sons in private school where they have armed policeman in the school. Political correctness should not come into play when protecting our children. I want someone there that will shoot if necessary and am happy to pay extra for it just like most of these hypocritical politicians do for their kids.

The N.R.A. was once, long ago, an organization with an honorable purpose. As the salaries of it's executives got larger, and the organization got more into bed with gun manufacturers and retailers, it became a voice for radical, and often militant, right-wing gun nuts. They refused to participate in reasonable dialogue and now are reviled by the majority of Americans for the blood on their hands and the ridiculous gun culture they've promoted. They do not deserve to be a part of the conversation and politicians who bow to their pressure must be identified for removal from office in the next election.

Clearly the best thing for schools to do to enhance their security is to keep idiots like this one and "crazy" Wayne LaPierre away from their grounds.

Where is the NRA's plan to fund this??? Who does this guy think is going to pay for thousands of police officers and/or armed guards?

Now that the NRA has succeeded in fear mongering of the worst degree, the NRA is going to work with school districts to "protect the children"? What an awful, awful group of folks these NRA leaders are. Scare the bejesus out of folks .... all the while promoting more guns - better guns. Makes one want to vomit at the destruction caused by these gun manufacturing self promoters. Best thing that could happen in America is to keep the NRA out of our schools. Period.

But, hey. God is A-OK with guns. Indeed, God promotes death and destruction ... even in schools. Or so says the gun manufacturing lobbyists. Nothing but profiteers. And fools.

    EVERY. ONE. OF. THEM.

Correct! Political correctness should not come into play. Emotional, knee jerk reactions should not come into play. Profits for gun manufacturers should definitely NOT come into play. Reason should be the guiding factor.

If we were talking about "baseball bats" instead of "assault weapons" would we still be talking about giving everyone a bat to repulse an attacker wielding a baseball bat? I don't think so. Most especially not if we were talking about a type of baseball bat that can deliver mulitple blows with one swing!

I agree with Larry L in part. The NRA lost its credibility for me back in the early 90s when LaPierre made the comment about Jack-booted, Nazi-Helmet UN Troops coming to take our guns in his opposition to a proposal that would have increased the number of police, and could have provided the numbers for increased security in our schools. Now he is backtracking on his previous statements forgetting that we could look them up whenever we want.
As for schools determining the type of security they want or don't want, I have no problem with professionals. I do have a problem with volunteers. The last thing I want to see is the same type of guys associated with the "Minutemen" who play at being border patrol along our border with Mexico. While they would probably be better armed than the police (and THAT really bothers me), they have no actual training in law-enforcement or personal security, and are probably at greater risk for causing an incident than they would be at preventing or stopping one.

Leave it to the states they say. Now leave it to the schools. What's next? Leave it to individual students to protect themselves? I guess the ultimate plan of the NRA would be for every man woman and child to be carrying 2 or 3 guns all day long so shouldn't be surprised.

Why are Democrats against Police Officers securing schools?????? What do Democrats have against having a police officer guarding schools????? Is there something going on in schools that Democrats don't want the police to see or know about???? Does it have to do with selling drugs to kids or even sex in schools????

Don't you see where this is headed? The NRA is sending out "feelers" to get the public to endorse what is to come for the NRA a very lucrative endeavor. A NRA sponsored, NRA controlled militia ... paid for by the United States government. A gun manufacturer wet dream come true.

I think this is a perfect opportunity for CNN to investigate why Democrats fear having police officers patroling our schools. Does it have to do with the selling of drugs, sex in the schools or even fights???????? I hope CNN researches this.

schools, business establishments, colleges, football stadiums, cinema halls, night clubs, temples should not decide how to protect their studens or members, public and outside environment should decide that. this is only possible through gun control and treatment of mental illness, which covers this country by 60%. guns cause mental illness for public by 60%.

I didn't realise this was a partisan issue. Most sane, rational people want less guns in school, not more.

The Obama administration is attempting to use tactics and methods of gun control that will inflict major damage to our 2nd Amendment before US citizens even understand what has happened. Obama can appear before the public and tell them that he does not intend to pursue any legislation (in the United States) that will lead to new gun control laws, while cloaked in secrecy, his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton is committing the US to international treaties and foreign gun control laws. Does that mean Obama is telling the truth?

I watched this entire segment and I have to say the interviewer looked like the crazy one. The NRA Pres answered every question with completely logical answers and she seemed miffed that she could not get him to screw up and I was very dissapponted in the way she seemed to try her hardest to make him and his organization look bad but, she could not. The majority of crimes are commited with stolen guns people. So many of you seem to think that outlawing guns and ammo will fix crimes! That's crazy! the only people who mind the laws are the good people. The bad people do not care about a law. Lets look at drugs, outlawed but still people get them, DUI, outlawed, still people do it. Murder, Stealing, Rape, outlawed and yet still happens. I believe someone or a lot of people in schools should be armed. The reason schools are targeted and movie theaters are targeted and not a courthouse is because they know where guns are and are not. I truly can not see a parent choosing to take thier child out of a school with armed people to but them in a school with no protection, Really?????

    --------------
Democrats are not opposed to the idea, the right wing is. Name one who's against it. Democrats are actually surprised to hear Republicans calling for more police officers when the right wing has been against hiring more officers or rehiring laid off ones for the past four years. Democrats are also opposed to the notion that putting armed guards in schools as being the only viable solution open to discussion.

If you want your kid educated in that type of environment, then I strongly suggest home schooling or a private school. End of story. My kid will not be exposed to that type of volatile situation, simply inviting someone to challenge the precautions.

Have you ever heard this before? "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?"
