Obama to make first Sunday show appearance in three years

(CNN) - President Barack Obama will make his first Sunday show appearance in more than three years this week, as he and congressional leaders are down to the wire on reaching a deal to avert the fiscal cliff.

His appearance Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" will be his first Sunday show interview since September 2009, when he appeared on five networks to tout his health care law.

While Obama has sat for a number of formal interviews, the major Sunday shows have a tradition and reputation for pressing newsmakers on tough questions, and because of their length, delve deeper than some other interviews. Many of Obama's interviews during his re-election campaign were with local television and radio stations.

The 2009 appearances were an effort to pressure agreement on health care.

No doubt the White House is making Obama available on Sunday to pressure lawmakers to deal with the looming fiscal cliff.

In a late Friday statement, Obama said he is "modestly optimistic that an agreement can be achieved."

Absent a deal, tax cuts on income of all levels will expire and cuts to both defense and discretionary spending will automatically trigger in the new year.

The onus is now on Republicans in the Senate to reach a deal. Obama said that if one is not reached, he will urge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to call for a vote on a scaled-back package.

The NBC program has been in the spotlight for host David Gregory's display of an empty gun magazine during a discussion of gun control on the program last Sunday. Magazines with a capacity of more than 10 ammunition rounds are illegal in Washington, where the show was broadcast, and police are investigating. NBC has made no comment.

Jeff – you would be wise to check your facts before posting.
Let me ask you ask you a question. If I owed you money, and said I needed to borrow more, would you give it to me?

Economics 101: – raising taxes is not a good way to raise revenue. It works for a short period of time, then the source of money runs out. Lower the tax rates for everyone (even keeping the Bush tax cuts) and let the people spend the money the way they need to, to live.

Why is it necessary for people who are successful to have to pay more taxes? They already pay 70% of the total tax revenue received by the Federal Government. And how much more do you think they should pay? What tax rate do you think is a fair rate for people who have worked hard for their money, and earned more than the general populace?

Where did you come up with the expression Tea Party no compromise Republicans? The Republicans will compromise, once there is something to compromise on. obama wants things his way: no debt limit, additional taxes on everyone, especially the rich. Once he gets that, then he might consider compromising on a few of the things that haven't been touched on.

In the past, Democrats have said give us what we want, and next year we will talk about compromising. That talk has never happened. It's like Lucy telling Charlie Brown, I won't move the ball on you Charlie Brown.

Who are these idiots? We need to raise taxes NOW on everyone who has a job. I don't have a job and don't plan on looking, because it is not fair. Just because you work and contribute to society doesn't mean you should have more than me. Now, with that said, Judge Judy is on. You all should get back to work. I am counting on you.

Let me get this straight. Just the other day pay raises were authorized for a government that has gotten less done in the entire history of the USA! Shocking!

If there is any question as to why the GOP and their rabid right-wing followers are so despised by us hard-working, sane, middle-class American patriots, just read the hate, lies, ignorance, and racism they spew here on the Ticker.

I love how liberals blame the tea party, republicans and Boehner but never the sleaze ball Harry Reid ( a known and confirmed liar). I saw one post where a guy said if we had sent the Tea Party people packing none of this would be happening. As a conservative white male, there is a part of me that wishes that the Democrats had control of the house and the Senate so we could all watch this country come to a grinding halt without any shadow of a doubt it is the result of failed liberal policies and a overwhlemed, ill informed, arrogant man that never had the intelligence, experience or morality to be president. Of course if that happened they would still blame someone else and we would all live in anarchry but let's face it, that is coming anyway it's just a matter of time.

I am happy that the President will be on Meet the Press. Most Republicans and Tea Party member must be millionaires because they sure are defending them and not the common everyday person. It disgusts me the hatred that they have for the people receiving any kind of assistance. They are so afraid of Norquist if they go against his pledge they will not get re-elected. So there it shows where their loyalty is not to the people but to Norquist. Children are starving in this country and the Repubs want to cut nutrition programs and food stamps. Elderly have to decide if they want food or medicine because they do not have money for both. Do the millionaires have to worry about this? No. They care less about the common folk. The Weeper of the House needs to go. Wait until the 2014 elections and the people will speak again and the Repubs and the Tea Party will go. I am a staunch supporter of our President and I am not on any kind of assistance.

I think that we should just go over the cliff. First, it cracks me up to hear all of the people who complained about the "Bush tax cuts for the rich" now complaining about how they will be impacted if they expire. I guess that whole tax cuts for the rich was just a big lie, huh? Second, let all of the people who voted for the Dems and bigger government pay for what they voted for. As they like to say, elections have consequences. You all want the huge nanny government – as long as someone else is paying for it!!

It may be the first Sunday in 3-years, but the guy is on TV, every talk show, day and night time – this guy loves TV ! He has a real "me" complex. I voted for him so this is not a rant except to say get to work. Campaign over.

Time for him to stop dividing Americans, pointing out faults, poiting fingers at others and get to work. Other Presidents led

Wonder if he will be asked about this...

President Barack Obama issued an executive order to end the pay freeze on federal employees, in effect giving some federal workers a raise. One federal worker now to receive a pay increase is Vice President Joe Biden.

According to disclosure forms, Biden made a cool $225,521 last year. After the pay increase, he'll now make $231,900 per year.

Members of Congress, from the House and Senate, also will receive a little bump, as their annual salary will go from $174,000 to 174,900. Leadership in Congress, including the speaker of the House, will likewise get an increase.

Here's a question we know they won't ask, "Why are you threatening to cut Social Security and at the same time you give Biden and Congress a raise?" The Government forces people to pay into Social Security, the gov't spends the money and then cuts the benefits. Thanks Obama. Way to look out for the little guys...or maybe in your mind only rich people get Social Security and this is part of your penalty on the rich? Politicians s u c k! All of them.

    @Jeff - Don't confuse the GOTP trolls w/facts!

Yes, we are going over this "fiscal cliff" unless some miracle out of scripture occurs. Even if the Dems and Reps in the Senate arrived at some small deal that kicks this issue down the road for another 6 months how could they hope to get it past a Tea Party filibuster in the House?! For crying out loud, Boehner has no control over his own caucus, the House of Representatives is out of control...

The White House is not making Obama available- it sounds like he just works there, like Bush- he is making himself available as the president. All presidents should be available to answer questions from the free press, but few choose to.

I am not surprised that the TEA BAGGERS are again using the Limbaugh and FAKE NEWS talking points blaming the "liberal media" and Obama. The TEA BAGGERS have been obstructionists from the get go and will continue to do so because their agenda has and continues to be God, Guns, Gays, and Gynecology!
