Obama to make first Sunday show appearance in three years

(CNN) - President Barack Obama will make his first Sunday show appearance in more than three years this week, as he and congressional leaders are down to the wire on reaching a deal to avert the fiscal cliff.

His appearance Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" will be his first Sunday show interview since September 2009, when he appeared on five networks to tout his health care law.

While Obama has sat for a number of formal interviews, the major Sunday shows have a tradition and reputation for pressing newsmakers on tough questions, and because of their length, delve deeper than some other interviews. Many of Obama's interviews during his re-election campaign were with local television and radio stations.

The 2009 appearances were an effort to pressure agreement on health care.

No doubt the White House is making Obama available on Sunday to pressure lawmakers to deal with the looming fiscal cliff.

In a late Friday statement, Obama said he is "modestly optimistic that an agreement can be achieved."

Absent a deal, tax cuts on income of all levels will expire and cuts to both defense and discretionary spending will automatically trigger in the new year.

The onus is now on Republicans in the Senate to reach a deal. Obama said that if one is not reached, he will urge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to call for a vote on a scaled-back package.

The NBC program has been in the spotlight for host David Gregory's display of an empty gun magazine during a discussion of gun control on the program last Sunday. Magazines with a capacity of more than 10 ammunition rounds are illegal in Washington, where the show was broadcast, and police are investigating. NBC has made no comment.

I expect he will get hard hitting questions like:
How hard was it to leave Hawaii this past week?
Did you get a tee off time when you got back?
Who are you blaming this week for your failures?
And other hard hitting questions from his cheer leading section.

The question should play out like this: Mr President, Spalding or Rawlings? What do mean? What brand of softball glove are you using to field these softball questions?

Our President cannot do anything about this mess until Congress votes the Bill in that he gave them. The President cannot sign a Bill into effect until Congress sends one to him to sign. Now, you can sit there in your comfy chair, and make judgements on how our President is failing us, but you'd be wrong .. as usual. Use your head for a change. It is the Republicans in both Houses that are stalling and simply saying no to everything put in front of their onery hides!

From the president on down all those in charge of getting a balanced budget. Oops sorry a budget passed should not have taken a vacation. When a worker has unfinished work to do they have to put in overtime. A student with unfinished lessons does homework in the evening and on weekends. Why should we expect any less from our congressmen. Put the time in Mr. President, quit kicking the problem down the road to future generations. We endured one down grade on your watch, we don't want another one. When your party had a super majority in the house why didn't you get a budget passed then? Even your own party doesn't like all of your rhetoric. No tax increases without real spending cuts.

Obama feels that the solution to all problems is more government, he doesn't understand that government is the problem. Four more and we are Greece.

But will someone actually ask him about his lies? Doubtful. They'll let him continue his derisive campaign of division and lead the DoNothing Democrats in the information war again the other half of America, and his destruction of America through excess spending.

Regan defeated the Soviets through forcing the USSR into bankrupcy. Obama is following the same model against America.

Readers (and leaders) should stop the posturing and for once be pragmatic. Along those lines, David, don't all bills dealing with appropriations have to originate in the House of Representatives? Thus, won't any "deal" have to first pass the House, rather than coming to the House from the Senate?

What exactly is President Obama doing wasting time on a long, drawn out Sunday interview when he and the rest of this ridiculous representation of our country cannot come to an agreement? Raise taxes and cut programs immediately. Make the compromise. Stop bickering, stalling, and pointing fingers. That goes for both sides of the aisle.

Want to talk about deficit and debt reduction and spending cuts??? Well, how about we begin by addressing the $5.2 trillion the GOP wasted on two foreign wars???

What are the chances that NBC will hold the President's feet to the fire on Benghazi? What are the chances that NBC will ask the same biting questions they would ask a Republican? What are the chances that NBC will ever become a truly unbiased news organization? What are the chances that NBC and BH0 will ever break up? Fox viewers want to know.

David, please ask the President why he has not pressured Harry Reid to allow the Senate to debate/vote on all the bills sent to them by the House. The House has been passing bills well in advance of the "cliff deadline", yet the White House and Senate table them AND claim the House is doing nothing. They're lying to the American people.

Any tax bill must originate in the House. Tradition allows a bill proposal to come from the Executive Branch and then it gets turned into a bill in the House. Bills are not supposed originate in the Senate, although this has happened in the past and the House allows the bill to progress without flagging the issue – a sign of good faith and cooperation.

I will be watching our President on Sunday morning. I'm glad he is making an appearance and I hope there is a deal to avoid the cliff by Monday afternoon. I'm a Republican, but it sort of seems like my own party is sometimes happy when deadlock occurs. It's as if our party wants the government to stop functioning. You can see this sentiment being expressed in comments even on this page.

But government infrastructure is critical to our daily lives. We depend on good government. It's not an option. We cease to be a country without a government. Someone will govern us, no matter what. I'd rather have an elected government in charge, not a military junta and not a big business board of directors. Our system of government is good, so lets just ask our representatives to start doing their job.

First question should be asked is where is the missing budget since last four years. Meet the press will be pal pal with president and there will be no hard core questions asked.

More "Campaigner in Chief" – it would be interesting if Obama would actually try and LEAD and COMPROMISE instead of bullying to get his own way in true Chicago thug-style politics.

Not to lecture on Constitutional law, but- The power of the purse lies with Congress, not the President. He can't spend a dime that they haven't approved. He also can't stop spending that they have authorized. He is the Commander in Chief of the Military, he sets foreign policy and he can sign or veto a bill passed by Congress. He cannot, though, sign one that hasn't been passed. If you truly love your country (and current tax rates) I suggest you call your local congressman and demand they get something done and soon.
