On Capitol Hill, lights are on and cliff negotiations continue

Washington (CNN) - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and staffers were on Capitol Hill on Saturday as negotiations to avoid the fiscal cliff continued.

There were no major developments at midday, Senate aides from both parties said.

They expected no details would be announced until Sunday afternoon, when Democratic and Republican members were scheduled to hold private conference meetings.

House Speaker John Boehner was in the Capitol building for a meeting Saturday morning, a senior aide to the speaker told CNN. He had a meeting with his chief of staff, the aide said, and was not planning to return to the Capitol later in the day.

President Barack Obama was working at the White House, a senior administration official said, and was in close contact with the negotiators on Capitol Hill.

Negotiations to avert the cliff - tax increases and spending cuts that Congress designed to trigger automatically in the new year - were renewed Friday when McConnell, Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi met for an hour behind closed doors with President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

Negotiators were not the only people in the Capitol: The rotunda was crowded with tourists who had ducked indoors to avoid a wet snowstorm.

The sooner the GOP representatives compitulate to the will of the people (i.e. who won the 2012 elections), the quicker we can move forward!

They should be working in the dark because taxpayers pay for those D lights while they aren't doing a D thing. In fact, if they have to use the potty, it should be a coin operated potty because they shouldn't be allowed to you know what for free.

I have doubts the GOP will come to it's senses. They made the debt, they made the deficit, the made the fiscal cliff- this is what they want. The only "work" for the rich. They have tried voter intimidation, changed voting laws, curtailed civil and voting rights and are monkeying with the electoral college and have gerrymandered districts. They have huge csh donors, but it didn't work. There just aren't enough rich, white people, or enough angry radicals to get them through elections.

As soon as they figure THAT out, they'll negotiate on fixing America. Until then, they'll work on their "slow-walk" suicide.

And you know what's funny is that Pres.Carter put solar panels to conserve energy and a republican in Bush took them done...That's just the tip of the ice berg of how republicans see things in the real world through rose colored glasses like Bush before the bottom falling out in 2008,he should of been impeached for that economic screwup shouldn't he!!

I'm confused. Am I supposed to feel sorry for the idiots inside doing the negotiating? They're getting paid, and very well to be there. They had many an opportunity to do the right thing months ago, but failed to do so. The fact that they had to cut short their holiday makes no difference to me. They've never cared about the inconvenience put on the citizenry, why should we really care whether they had to return to their cushy lives a little before they anticipated the need? Boo Hoo Hoo.

Three things block implementation of a balanced plan; lobbyist Grover Norquist, the Tea Party right-wingers and unlimited billionaire funds that join them in threatening the re-election hopes of any GOP member voting for revenue from rich people like them.
