'Fiscal cliff' talks stall in final hours

(CNN) - Senate Republicans and Democrats remain far apart in their effort to avert a year-end combination of spending cuts and tax increases that could trigger a new recession, Majority Leader Harry Reid said Sunday.

"There's still significant distance between the two sides, but negotiations continue," Reid said as Congress held a rare Sunday session in a bid to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. "There's still time left to reach an agreement, and we intend to continue negotiations."

    Boehner didn't have the backbone to do his job and offer a proprosal because he is afraid he will lose his speakership. my first thought was no big loss if boehner voted out. The scarey part is if Boehner out who takes over. Cantor or some other T Troll. Now there is a sqabble over a few billion dollars. Norquist is holding tight. If fiscal cliff happens Norquist can't do a thing about it as taxes go up for every one. Including defense cuts and other cuts for all.

    The GOP don't trust the democrats to reign in spending if they get tax increases and the democrats don't trust the GOP to put the interests of the economy over tax cuts for the rich. If they'd just compromise between the two positions it could be solved.

    The best things about going over the cliff are that the military budget and the farm subsidies get slashed. Now everyone feels the pain. Very surprised that the two pet projects of the republican agenda are being gutted.....

    I dislike these useless politicians which view their jobs as a game and work like its a win or lose game.
    For God sake the whole government is a game , which I interpret as a joke. 50 or 60 year olds acting like 5 or 6 year olds.
    Ex. A little kid bitching just because he didnt get his way, and getting back at his little brother, then later the little brother thinking up an elaborate plan to get back at the older brother.
    Its just useless and quite silly. The Government should restructure completely and seriously screen every candidate and I mean seriously because most of the candidates for the senate tend to move up regardless of intelectual ability. I would suggest to change the law so younger college students without the radical, biased, and vigot ideas that the older genleman and women tend to have.

    EMPHASIS – By no means am I calling to overthrow the government, I don't want to see a civil war in this country ever again, nor more bitterness and hatred among the citizens that make up this One great Nation Under God. JUST ASKING THEM TO REPRESENT THOSE THEY GOVERN FAIRLY AND TAKE SERIOUSLY THE DUTIES AND OBLIGATIONS THEY ARE CALLED TO UPHOLD. And also looking carefully at what is called for if they don't represent those they govern equally. Look closely at what the Declaration of Independence states!!!

    This paragraph from the Declaration of Independence really sums it up. Please do their job fairly and to their utmost ability to get it done in a manner that doesn't punish the lesser and give to the more powerful unequal power or assets.
    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.     May our government gain hearts similar to those who actually wrote our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.     Instead of pretending to do something why dont they just take the holidays that are not due to end until 4th January.
    Based on the usual non or total under achievement they can't possibly make it any worse but let em see how not doing anything which is the norm actually works out just like the economists are saying only worse.
    I suggest we should be able to have re-call votes for senators and representatives on major crisis votes like these where if they vote down what we want 2% of voters in any district or senate area can be re-called on the basis of any one specific vote. That for sure would make em think before assuring us they were elected not to vote for tax increases when clearly it is in the national interest and approved in a national election.

    I am in shock and disbelief. the republicans have the power (tis true) in the house to prepare the legislation to deal with this, and they know that it is futile to draft a bill that wont get passed. the democrats, and liberal minds dont seem to understand that they have to agree, and while they maintain the Senate and majority elsewhere, the House is where it counts. personally, i dont understand why people need to rely on the govn for welfare and foodstamps, etc as much. i make just over the Poverty line, and dont qualify for any assistance, whether energy, foodstamps, medical/dental, or welfare. for all of these services i have been paying for for 15 years, i dont qualify for any.
