Not to be frozen out: Pelosi explains 'Photoshopped' photo

(CNN) - It's a historical photo which shows the 61 Democratic Congresswomen who were sworn in on Thursday.

Except it never (fully) happened.

Pelosi explained why the photo her office released and posted online shows four more faces - all members of Congress - than does one taken by other photographers at the photo opportunity.

"Is that what they did?" she asked when a reporter questioned her about the apparent technical addition - "Photoshopping" - of (left to right) Reps. Yvette Clarke, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Shelia Jackson Lee, and Corrine Brown to the official photo.

Pressed further as to whether the photo she distributed was an accurate historical record, she said, "Yeah, but [it's a] historical record of who the Democratic women of Congress are.

"And also is an accurate record that it was freezing cold, and our members had been waiting a long time for everyone to arrive, and that I had to get back into the building to greet constituents, family members to get ready to the - go to the floor," she said a press conference. "It wasn't like we had the rest of the day to stand there."

Instead of holding the entire group for the absent four members, Reps. Clarke, Wasserman Schultz, Lee, and Brown posed for a separate photo together, which was apparently added to the official photo.

From the Facebook page of Rep. Yvette Clarke

Pelosi said the photo "was an accurate reflection of who the 61 members - the Democratic women members of Congress are."

"And not only were they women, but they reflected the beautiful diversity of our - our country. Women who are - from every community, as well as every religious faith. So we were pretty excited about it," she said.

The newly inaugurated Congress includes 78 women voting members. Nineteen of the congresswomen are freshmen. Pelosi's count included three non-voting delegates to Congress.

The GOP had a problem giving aid to the Hurricane victims because it bears a womans name, SANDY.

Not even a good Photoshop job. The four that were added are too big and too high up compared with the subjects in the original.

Wow, Claudia. Did you just get out of grade school, come home, and post that pithy thought all by your little self? Impressive.

The only thing certain here us that the photo on the right was not 'photoshopped' to produce the photo on the left; the two are completly separat photos taked from a different angle. If the photo on the left is photoshopped, it's not clear whether four women were added in the rear or whether the four are the real photo and the other women were added down front.

"It's not factual, but it's accurate..." Seriously though, it does show an annoying mindset among our "betters." They could have just added a separate picture of the four absent members, and said these are also female congresspersons, but they were not present for the group photo. The truth would not have have hurt. Usually doesn't, if memory serves. If I can still remember when we heard the truth. Guess we can still say, "When Photoshop lied, no one died" this time. Move on people, nothing to see here. Or less than meets the eye anyway.

Claudia, I loved your post. I hope the new female Senators give the male GOP bozos a fight for their money. Luckily, they are not tainted by testosterone so they can actually think instead of react. I am woman, hear me roar! :-)

You are correct, Harper. The one on the right is not the one that was Photoshopped.

maybe someone should ask that bimbo about the holocaust. she will probably revise that history lesson too.

why do we or actually those rhodes scholars in california continue to elect such a nitwit ?

she is a perfect example of why we should enact strict term limits on all public offices.

give them three terms and throw them out.

that is the type of history this country really needs.

Look, I'm not a photographer, and frankly I don't care that they were added (sounds like there was a good reason), but I would like to say that both photos are so different for each person that the added women aren't really the biggest difference. In one, all heads are turned inward instead of off into the distance. There are some women who are not visible because they are behind others, etc... they actually look like two entirely different photos and so I would say "photoshopped? What about the fact they aren't even the same photo at all?"

Fifty seven Congresswomen standing around outside in freezing weather. None had the common sense to say "Hey let's all wait inside where it’s warm".

This trend of photoshopping is not right. How can we believe anything we see on line these days?

Should I mention that Stalin used to do similar work, albeit in reverse fashion by taking people out rather than putting them in (except himself, that is, he put himself in many a historic photo he'd been absent for).

People laugh at such a shoddy phony photo, but the real point is how ALL of our government officials ,Republicans & Democrats alike, lie to us and go on as if nothing is wrong and do it again & again..... Lets all wake-up and kick all the crooks out.

Right, and nor is the picture of the four women the same that was inserted in the big one on the left. The angles there are also clearly different. In any case, it's an amateurish job. The four added could have been reduced to match the others.

this pic was touched up a lot more than the 4 people being added. take a good look at the pic on the right and people that are blocked out are moved or squeezed in so you can see them. lousy photo editing...
