Treasury Department rules out $1 trillion coin

(CNN) - The Treasury Department does not plan to mint a $1 trillion platinum coin to avert federal government default, a spokesman said Saturday.

The statement from Deputy Assistant Treasury Secretary Anthony Coley effectively puts to bed speculation that the administration would act unilaterally to avert default. It also puts the onus on Congress – specifically Republicans in the House - to act.

Rubio lays out proposal to 'modernize' immigration

(CNN) - Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, is laying out elements of his proposal to reform the immigration system, which he pitches as much-needed modernization for the outdated system.

Rubio, who was elected in 2010 to his first U.S. Senate term, told The Wall Street Journal in an interview published Saturday that his plan would include a permanent residency provision and a route to citizenship for those undocumented immigrants currently in the United States, but he stressed that the plan was “not blanket amnesty or a special pathway to citizenship.”

Obama visits the clinic

(CNN) - President Barack Obama stopped in a Pentagon clinic for a checkup on Saturday, but it wasn't for a case of the flu.

The White House said the president underwent a "routine fitness evaluation" which was conducted at the Fit to Win Clinic at the Pentagon.

One in seven Americans approve of Congress

(CNN) - It's really no surprise: Americans aren't thrilled with Congress.

That's the finding of a new poll from Gallup, which shows the legislative branch has an approval rating of 14%.

Freshman senator calls for 'serious action' in Washington

(CNN) - Sen. Deb Fischer, who was sworn into her first term just over a week ago, laid out a path for the Republican Party to follow through the debt limit and spending battles ahead in the next few months.

"These hardworking taxpayers are tired of petty 'beltway battles' and they're frustrated with the lack of progress from their elected leaders," the Nebraskan said in her party's weekly address.
