(CNN) – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will testify on January 23 before the House Foreign Affairs Committee about the U.S. Consulate attack in Benghazi, Libya, the office of Chairman Ed Royce announced Monday.
Clinton was scheduled to appear on Capitol Hill in December but canceled her testimony while being treated for illness, a concussion and a blood clot near her brain. The country's top diplomat returned to work last week.
Four State Department officials were disciplined last month after an independent review of the September 11, 2012, consulate attack revealed "systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies" at the State Department. The violence left four Americans dead, including the U.S. ambassador.
After the report, one official resigned, while three others were placed on administrative leave and relieved of their duties, said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.
Clinton likely will face questions about the State Department's handling of security for diplomatic personnel.
In a statement, Royce, a California Republican, said his intention for the hearing is "to focus on why this attack was not better anticipated, what leadership failures at the State Department existed and what management deficiencies need to be corrected in order to better secure our diplomatic facilities abroad and protect our diplomats serving in them."
The committee has held two hearings on Benghazi: one on December 20 with Deputy Secretary William J. Burns and Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Thomas R. Nides; the other on November 15 with testimony from security experts, including the Government Accountability Office and former CIA personnel.
"It is important to learn all we can about what happened in Benghazi because at the end of the day, it could happen again," Royce added. "After all, al-Qaeda plans attacks over and over again.”
Clinton is also expected to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but a date for that appearance has not been announced.
Will Sen. Graham be happy now? He has been on Mrs. Clinton's back for a long time and just about accused her of malingering. Hopefully Sen. Graham will not be on the front pages any longer. He is angry and accusatory and it is time we dealt with Senators who know how to bring people together not split them apart.
We know one thing........we still won't get any straight answers for the lies that were told about Benghazi.
Go ahead hillary clinton an make your voice heard, you have a right.
She will follow exactly what has already been given in evidence. There will after a month of ability to review and consider all wht other at senate hearings have said be nothing to make Clinton accountable as such as the head she has already admitted her " responsibility" and thats as far as this will get.
Frankly the corrective measures needed are already clear. One of which is if you wanna avoid this kind of issue you need a bigger security buidget for consulate and embassies in places like libya and id those " sovreign staes wont allow that you cant have a consulate or embassy which is not totally a good thing either especially if we want to be the worlds policeman and saviour of global rights.
congress has better things to do than grill Clinton. it will be worse than a lousy b grade movie in terms of attention and effect.
All the pubbers are looking for is a Watergate-class scandal, and they're not going to find it. First off, Hillary is an experienced pol, and can avoid answering questions with the best of them. Second, she really doesn't give a, err, hoot about what the right wing thinks. And finally, the people who really care about this issue won't be voting in the demmie presidential primaries in 2016 and wouldn't vote for Hillary on a bet. They won't destroy her, won't damage Obama, and won't derail her presidential plans if she wants to run. Have fun!
Part of this problem in Bengazai was made by the abassador because he was outside the embassy. There was some lax security in the area. I don't know if Clinton can really provide any more information that hasn't already been said.
She should have come forward long ago, before her illnesses and injuries. It reeks of lies, gross negligence, crime, and guilt. She and the president have some dirty and deadly secrets between them. It will end her reign as Sec of State in shame, and cloud the inauguration. One can't escape their sins.
I occasionally listen to right-wing radio (Levin, Hannity and the like) and I can tell you now that it won't matter what Sec. Clinton says, the right-wing nuts won't believe a word.
Pretty pathetic that the GOP has devolved into a bunch of paranoid lunatics...
There are a number of reasons why I voted for Obama in 2008 to keep Hillary Clinton out of office. I will do the same thing in 2016 if I have to. If the Democratic party is destined to win the 2016 race, because of the Republican parties lack of intelligence and common sense, then I will ask all my Republican and Independent Moderate friends to switch to the Democratic party to make sure this woman never becomes POTUS.
Where was the GOP's zest for truth and understanding after 9/11? The hypocrisy is staggering.
