NRA airs new TV ad criticizing Obama on eve of White House gun announcement

Washington (CNN) - The National Rifle Association released a new television commercial Tuesday night charging President Barack Obama of hypocrisy for being "skeptical" about placing armed guards at schools, while his own two daughters are protected by the U.S. Secret Service.

"Are the president's kids more important than yours?" a narrator says in the 30 second ad. "Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools, when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school."

The commercial is running on the Sportsman Channel, a cable network focused on outdoors programming such as hunting and fishing. It is also posted on a dedicated web site "Stand and Fight."

On Wednesday, Obama is set to unveil a new set of proposals that would place very tough restrictions on the ownership and sale of firearms.

In the ad, the narrator only mentions Obama by name, but it also features images of Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NBC anchor David Gregory. Bloomberg is an influential voice in favor of stricter gun laws and has dipped into his personal fortune to help fund a lobby campaign, and Feinstein, a California Democrat, is helping spearhead a congressional effort to enforce tougher gun laws.

Gregory questioned NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre in a December interview about the effectiveness of the organization's proposal to put armed guards in schools. After the interview, the NRA and conservative media outlets noted that Gregory's children attended the same school as Obama's daughters and the school has a security department.

"Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes," the narrator says. "But he is just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security. Protection for their kids and gun-free zones for ours."

The introduction of Obama's children into the gun debate further demonstrates the high stakes in this very complicated and emotional issue about how to weigh Second Amendment rights with the safety of citizens following several high profile killings, including the recent massacre of 20 children and six educators at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school.

As advocates for new gun restrictions pledge to pressure Congress to pass new laws, the NRA and other like-minded gun rights groups and conservative organizations have said they will fight any changes to the current gun laws.

"Stand and fight sums up what Americans need to do to preserve our Second Amendment freedom," NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam told CNN.

The NRA is not ruling out expanding the buy to air the commercial elsewhere.

The group, which had an existing partnership with the Sportsman Channel, has added an NRA hosted daily weekday program to the network's lineup.

And the NRA is nothing more than a corporate version of Grover Norquist. Guns don't kill people, but the NRA helps the people who do.

Just like the NRA. Get all emotional and react before even knowing the facts. These are the last people who should own a gun. These are the type of people to shoot someone in an act of road rage.

Bah! Typical of the limited thinking processes of NRA members. The President's daughters have protection because they are the President's daughters and need protection from the likes of extremists who belong to the NRA. How pathetic that anyone would object to trying to stop the slaughter of innocent children.

And it runs on the hunting and fishing network. You can just see a bunch of tobacco chewing, crotch grabbing, fat guys screaming at the t.v.! What a pathetic attempt by the most successful terrorist group in America: the NRA.

Really? This is a comparison? The President of the largest democracy in the free world, who's children could be the target of kidnapping, terrorists or any host of threats? I'm all for doing whatever it takes to protect our children, but honestly, this commercial is exactly why people are turning away from the Gun Lobby and the right wing. Elitist? He has absolutely no choice and using manpower armed with firearms to protect the first family is part of our nation's law. But putting guns in every school in America as a way to solve a gun problem? Now that is hypocrisy.

What is the problem with these people? Why do we need these weapons in the hands of citizens? They have one purpose, to kill. And I believe there is a "Thou shalt not kill" somewhere in the bible.

Get rid of these dangerous, horrific weapons and stop listen to these reactionary crazy people. There will be plenty of less dangerous yet no less lethal guns out there. Let's just stop the insanity, keep the guns out of the hands of killers and the insane, and stop listening to the gun lobby

It's great that The nra comes out and exposes thes people who aware elitist. It's good enough for them. But not good enough for us. David Gregory broke the law having high capacity mags on his show, no charges. His kids have gaurs protection at their school. Diane fienstien carries a gun but makes it so only movie stares can carry in her home state of california. We are witnessing an attack on our second amendment rights. A civil right. Thousands have died to give us these rights. It is just as important as the freedom of speech.

The NRA is an elitist organization. All you have to do is see where they spend their money and on who. So this is just another pot calling the kettle black statement.

More important? No. More of a target? Yes. Why do you folks at the NRA have to ignore all reality?

Why we need guns. ? It is for people going to war. If you speed or drive without licence you place heavy fine, similarly introduce heavy fine. it will automatically get reduced.

Oh that is just stupid. No, Obama's kids are not more important than yours, but they are FAR more likely to be kidnapped or killed for political reasons. Hostile foreign nations would LOVE to kidnap Obama's children to to enact a ransom from the president. Let's face it, 99.99% of American children aren't at risk of being specifically (I said specifically, not indiscriminately) targeted by foreign powers or other nutjobs trying to make a political point.

He should be removed from his job as he cannot differentiate between president and ordinary citizen. Yes president needs to be protected even if he is Bush. Nobody cares about you but president has all kinds of threat in this crazy world.

The stricter with gun laws, the better. We need this gun law to be put in place, for our protection, Too much killing. Enough is enough. Of course Obama's daughter has security in their school, He's the president. GO OBAMA!!!!

What a ridiculous aurgument. "Are the president's kids more important than yours?" Well, actually they are. If my children where kidnapped it would be devastating to me personally. If the President's kids were kidnapped, they could essentially hold the nation hostage. I don't want armed guards in the schools. That will be far more dangerous than the chance that something like Newtown could happen there.

During the 1760s pre-revolutionary period, the established colonial militia was composed of colonists, which included a number who were loyal to British imperial rule. As defiance and opposition to the British rule developed, a distrust of these Loyalists in the militia became widespread among the colonists, known as Patriots, who favored independence from British rule. As a result, these Patriots established independent colonial legislatures to create their own militias that excluded the Loyalists and then sought out to stock up independent armories for their militias. In response to this arms build up, the British Parliament established an embargo on firearms, parts and ammunition on the American colonies

News flash, we're no longer under British Rule.

The NRA's latest TV ad is ridiculous. Would anyone want to see the children of a U.S. President taken hostage?? What kind of predicament would that put America in? OF COURSE the first family deserves armed protection AT ALL TIMES!!

The NRA thinks it pulls the strings but it does not, America has voted fair and square regardless of what the deranged birther conspirtors think. President Obama was elected TWICE! It is his job as the leader of the majority to protect and serve the interests of the the majority. IF you do not like it try and get your guy elected next time. Oh ya and try and do it legally and with some tact and just maybe you will succeed.

How do Americans have any respect for the NRA? It boggles my mind how anyone sides with this organization. They do not have the best interest of Americans in mind and safety (not gun safety, safety) is far from their concern.
