Washington (CNN) – The National Rifle Association has seen what the organization calls an "unprecedented" spike in membership numbers over the last month, the group's spokesman told CNN Tuesday.
Approximately 250,000 people have joined the organization's existing 4.25 million members, according to NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam, since new calls for gun control began surfacing in the immediate aftermath of the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.
"This is in direct response to the threats and accusations coming from Sen. (Dianne) Feinstein and President Obama," Arulanandam said.
"If anyone is wondering if the American people cared about the Second Amendment ... those numbers give a very clear answer," he added.
The last time the nation's most powerful gun lobby saw a similar surge in membership, Arulanandam said, was during the Clinton administration.
In addition to new members, the NRA is also receiving an influx of financial contributions.
"This is going to be a very expensive and hard-fought fight," Arulanandam said about the upcoming legislative battle in Congress over new gun legislation.
Obama will reveal the administration's proposals for new restrictions on firearms on Wednesday.
Why can't we speak directly with gun manufactures about their ideas for making their products safer. Why are we dealing with a lobbying organization. I would think that gun manufactures are just as outraged that their products were used to destroy the lives of children.
In the case when you see that person or office on the ballot that you know nothing about it is better to not vote than to vote for something you know nothing about. Same goes for guns. If you know nothing about the ban or guns themselves, than for your own sake and others it is better that you do not address the issue.
Hey, "there's a sucker born every minute."
The NRA does not care one bit about an individual's civil rights. They don't care about the safety of individual citizens. They don't care about the violent media that's out there, despite their finger pointing to the contrary. If they were so concerned about violent media, then why did they release today a smart phone app for four year olds. It allows four year olds to practice shooting on a shooting range at targets that bear a strong resemblence to coffins.
"I believe there are more than 5 million Americans who are just as outraged that innocent children were murdered and will demand action, will be willing to contribute financially and will fight just as hard as the NRA."
Yes, but unlike gun manufacturers who fund the NRA and other nutjobs, the rest of Amurika isn't receiving money directly from the government as part of the grossly inflated defense budget that they can then turn around and use to fund lobbying efforts to promote the sale of their products. In greed we trust.
As a gun owner, I cannot fathom the level of stupidity it would take to join the NRA at any time - let alone these days when their goofy, self-serving, propagandist response to 20 murdered children puts them directrly in the camp of Joseph Goebels.
NRA supports the crazies that kill our children. The 2nd amendment give you nut jobs the right to own a musket.
@ Squigman...why would eating a pile of manure even be a considered?
Ed1 - get back to me when guns are subjected to the kind of ownership, licensing, registration and regulation that cars are. Funny isn't it, how all those auto regulations haven't driven us to be a communist country.
Yours is typical rightwing drivel - the country is tired of it, and those who spew it.
Your use of pointless political fear-mongering as an argument for unregulated gun ownership is beyond idiotic, and should be an embarassment to every sentient American.
Thanks Aviator. Some segments of our society dont understand what it means to defend and make sacrifices for those rights they are so willing to give away with their sudden media driven, politically motivated and misplaced outrage.
I run an organization called the ANRA (or anti NRA). We had an increase in membership this month by 1.5 million people, and of course more donations came in as people were horrified by the NRA's calls for a distopian society.
Don't ask me for transparency or to prove this, please just take the press release I've written up and report it as fact. Thank you.
You really think the NRA would come out and say that membership has DECREASED since the Sandy Hook shootings? Sorry but I don't buy this great increase in membership if you can't prove it then this fish ain't biting.
This is a symptom of a very sick nation. Unfortunatelly, people that don't care about othesr are very quick to change their tune only when it hits them. We can say that there are 250K Sara Palins in the country. Not bad, they millions with a brain.
To you 250K, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, over the lives of our CHILDREN and all you are doing is making the CEO's of the NRA richer. I would love you too.
Okay...I got to say something profoundly irritating ... let everyone own a gun or even multiple guns... but outlaw all bullets and other dangerous projectiles...Guns...perfectly legal....Bullets, not so much. The second amendment covers the right to own guns, BUT does not say the right to own 'loaded guns' or bullets. Alright...let the trolling begin.
Gee I wonder wonder whats driving up NRA membership and the rush to buy firearms? I would like to see the new gun puchase numbers nationwilde from these silent consumers on purchases since all this started.
"I would think that gun manufactures are just as outraged that their products were used to destroy the lives of children."
Hahahaha! They don't give a hot, steamy, runny pile of SH-T as long as the defense budget money keeps rolling in.
I love how NOBODY likes to be told what to do, but EVERYBODY loves to tell everybody else what to do. Do not infringe on my rights, and I will not infringe on yours!
OK, ban the so called "Assault rifles". Guess what!?!?! There will still be mass murders. Can't any of you see that?!?! Assault rifles are not the problem and will sot be the solution. Please do not use your lack of common sense to experiment with my rights!
