Conservative group unveils anti-Hagel TV ad

(CNN) - The conservative group American Future Fund released Friday its first television ad in a multi-platform campaign against former Sen. Chuck Hagel as President Barack Obama's defense secretary nominee.

The spot will air on cable television in New York, the group said, and is critical of the state's senior senator, Chuck Schumer and his support for Hagel's nomination.

"After a career supporting Israel, Schumer now backs Chuck Hagel for defense secretary," the narrator reads. "The same Chuck Hagel who supported direct negotiations with Iran after Iran's President threatened to wipe Israel off the map."

The spot also makes a couple unsupported suggestions: "How badly does Chuck Schumer want to be the Senate Majority Leader? And what did President Obama promise him?"

The ad mirrors the claims against Hagel and Schumer the group leveled in a print advertisement published on Thursday.

Schumer and Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, are perhaps the two highest-profile Jewish senators who have announced their support for Hagel after speaking privately with him in recent days.

Hagel is a former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska and is seen as Obama's most controversial nominee for his second-term cabinet. Hagel has faced criticism some on both sides of the aisle because of past positions he has taken on Israel, Iran and U.S. military action.

Critics have also objected to his description in 1998 of an ambassadorial nominee as "openly, aggressively gay" – for which he has since apologized - and his 2007 remark that the "Jewish lobby intimidated lawmakers."

His supporters recently launched a group to come to his defense, but have not yet announced a pro-Hagel campaign plan.

I can see it now....a hush forms over the crowd...the air is electric and crackling with anticipation....the leader of the conservative nutjob super PAC approaches the veiled table slowly to build the tension....arrives....and with a magnificent flourish, he tears off the veil to reveal:

    A shiny polished turd.

The Neocons will not get their war with Iran. How sad the chicken hawks will not get their war sinc e they won't send their children to war. Iran, a country of 80 million people: Hell we could not handle the 29 million in Iraq with a suicide attack everyday. When the USA pays off the 200 billion dollar Iraq war debt maybe we can think about some foreign adventure. Wars are not free. With over 4, 500 dead Americans in Iraq alone how many would die in Iran ? Just creat a Palestinian state now like Bush II promised. A multi-ethnic Israel between Jews, Christians, and Palestianians would be great. Switzerland works fine. Hagel will do a great job.

  11. Former Republican, now an Independent

This is what the neo-cons that control the GOP do to one of their own when they won't fall in line and submit to them. Hagel has always had a mind of his own and that does not play well with these radical extremists.

The far right Republicon wing nuts eating their own. This is the same self destructive insanity that is killing the Republican party. Hay, this is a Republican that will have the direct ear of the president. The Republicans should cherish this position, and thank God that Obama didn't appoint a feared liberal. But Hagel isn't NAZ! enough for them. The Republican moderates need to step up and take the wheel. These nuts are driving the Republican bus right off the fiscal cliff.

Typical Republican ploy. Throw one of their own under the bus just to be a thorn in Obama's side.

By now we have heard over amd over again about jewish lobbies/ intimidation ( c/f gun lobby intimidation) and that latter position right or wrong does not stop Republicans or Democrats being appointed to comittees or posts. We have also heard about Iran sanctions and Republicans constantly take it out of context i.e . he voted agains US only sanctions as he believes and can point to other areas/ countries where US only sanctions did not work.
Against settlements? Well if you are not say good bye to any solution to the Israel/ Palestinian conflict It will erupt eventually in to real all out war with Lebanese, Syrian support possibly Egypt and Iran also messing around in support.
Time to put more effort into the debt crisis and stop wasting time on these confirmations please.
Whoever is appointed defense chief will do the CIC's bidding if necessary or resign.
    Regards,
    Hodgson.

Chuck Hagel would make an excellent Secretary of Defense. But the republicans don't like him because they want someone who loves the death and destruction that comes from war so they can get no-bid contracts for their companies and they can keep letting Israel dictate American foreign policy.

Why this attack on this individual? Because he's not so lopsided for Israel? So it's not about the best interests of America, but what's best for Israel?

When are the Republicans going to stop their obsessive "If Obama thinks it is good, it must be bad" mentality? Where are the evolved Republican thinkers? Seriously, they can't all be buried under the stacks of bibles and guns bearing down on them, can they?

Hagel is not now, nor has he ever been a Conservative. His actions are more in line with Obama's and will support the gutting of the military.

You have to love the logic of the GOP: "we hate the President so much, we'll block anybody he nominates for a cabinet post". When he nominates a Republican, they look VERY STUPID!

why is it when something ignorant or hateful is said it seems to come from so-called Conservatives that are also supposed to be so pious? I just don't get it and NO I don't think all liberals are goody-goody either but in the past few years the far right and GOP seems to have rallied around stupidity
