First lady to help promote presidential agenda

Washington (CNN) – A bright spotlight will shine on first lady Michelle Obama Monday as inauguration watchers focus on her clothes, new hairstyle, and to what length she has gone to shield her children from the public eye.

But beyond the pomp and circumstance of the inaugural festivities, the first lady will play a role in helping to try and advance her husband's policy goals over the next four years through a fractured Congress in a divided nation. The first sign of this came on Friday when she appeared ">in a video broadly explaining how the Obama for America campaign will transform into an issues advocacy organization as CNN reported earlier this month. The video was emailed to supporters Sunday afternoon with a note from the organization's new executive director.

A tale of two terms: Obama's unfinished business and battles ahead

Washington (CNN) – What a difference.

Barack Obama assumed the presidency four years ago on a day full of history and hope. The second time around there is less hype, far lower expectations, and no illusions about the capital's political climate.

Is Biden in 2013 the start of Biden 2016?

Washington (CNN) - Joe Biden's manner of celebrating the start of his second term may offer hints of where the vice president sees himself in four years.

The potential candidate for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination gave nods to both early voting states this weekend – attending an inaugural ball thrown by Iowa Democrats on Sunday, and inviting New Hampshire's newly elected Democratic governor to his official swearing-in ceremony on Sunday.

Jarrett: Diversity to come in Obama Cabinet posts

(CNN) - As President Barack Obama prepared to be sworn in on inauguration weekend, the White House continued to promise diversity as the president formulates his second term Cabinet.

"His Cabinet when he's finished - and he's far from finished - will have diversity including women, including people of color," Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett told CNN's chief national correspondent John King and chief political analyst Gloria Borger from the White House shortly before Obama took the Oath of Office.

Shuttling justice: Sotomayor administers oaths, sells books

Washington (CNN) - Justice Sonia Sotomayor has managed a whirlwind few days, and it promises to get even busier. In fact, a traditional inaugural ceremony was moved up to accommodate her busy schedule.

She has a new book released last week, a memoir called "My Beloved World" (Knopf/Random House). To promote it, the 58-year-old justice had arranged several media interviews and book signings. Then came the invitation last month from Vice President Biden to have Sotomayor do his swearing in, for separate ceremonies Sunday and Monday.

Democrats confident in Obama's gun proposals; Republicans skeptical

Washington (CNN) - The package of legislative measures meant to stem gun violence – proposed by President Barack Obama last week - was met with varying forecasts of success Sunday by lawmakers who will take up the plan in the coming days.

And David Plouffe, a senior adviser to Obama, told CNN's chief political correspondent Candy Crowley that he was confident certain measures, like reinforcing laws mandating background checks during gun sales, would succeed in Congress.

Obama to strike 'hopeful' tone in inaugural address

(CNN) – As the hours wind down to President Barack Obama's inaugural address, the White House says they see Monday's remarks as one in a series of speeches laying out the president's vision for his second term that started with his victory on election night.

The tone of Obama's inaugural address will be "hopeful," White House senior adviser David Plouffe told CNN's chief political correspondent Candy Crowley from the National Mall in Washington.
