Washington (CNN) – Almost six weeks after the Connecticut shooting rampage that killed 20 first-graders, Sen. Dianne Feinstein on Thursday proposed a new federal ban on some assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons, as well as ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.
With assault rifles and semi-automatic rifles displayed on one side and police officers who support her proposal behind her, Feinstein said the goal is to "dry up the supply of these weapons over time."

Assault weapons should only be allow for people who pass background checks. If you are going to ban them, ban them completely in the USA.
Do NOT include a "Grandfather" Clause. These types of semiautomatic weapons will be on the streets for years and years to come if you do this and you will not effect the problems that are faced today. If people ran out and bought these weapons in the last 6 to 8 weeks – TOO BAD. They should have known that there was the possibility that these weapons would be band. They should not have spent there money. DO NOT GRANDFATHER THESE WEAPONS
Please learn the difference between a CLIP and a MAGAZINE. You sound like fools when you say CLIP. They are NOT the same.
Nope- the lady will display some semi-automatic guns that have been around for 100 years before the gunmakers decided it would be cool to make them look like some kind of military scarey looking creation. True assault weapons, meaning one trigger pull and multiple shots, are already illegal.
Weapon used in wars, does not belong in Americans homes. These weapons are not used for sportsmanship, they are used to hunt human beings. Magazines with more than 10 rounds do not belong in American homes. Common sense must be used by all who are capable to use common sense. More emphasis show be given to those in need of continuous mental health help . First thing cut by States, as well as federal government, is mental health facilities and providers Help is given to children , but young adults and older citizens have to fend for themselves.
Most polls show the opposite trends. Support for an assault weapons ban has gone up since late December. One poll showed support for a national background check system to be as high as 90%.

I mean seriously, a .22lr? Because what, its so big, bad, powerful, and scary looking?
She is only concered really with "cosmetic features" and not "functional features" that would technically constitute an "assualt weapon".
This is all an effort to to eventually disarm the American people.

CNN... First off, your stats are wrong for the way they are stated, please correct them.
Second, It is impossible for any inanimate object to be a weapon without a "user". Are you stating people will be using guns at this gathering? I doubt it. Please correct.

I'm not a history major but I'm pretty sure that when the people wrote about guns in the constitution they never thought that assault weapons would ever be an issue. Why would a regular citizen need to possess a gun that powerful. Guns to hunt with check a gun to protect yourself and your family check a gun strong enough to take out 20 people uh it's not rocket science. Yes people have a right to protect themselves within reason. The big guns were made for big fights no one is having WWII in their backyard so why would anyone need a gun to protect themselves in that way. The Army the Navy the Marines if you wanna play with big guns join 1 of them. Just because they are there does not mean they should be available to everybody. I really don't see what there is to vote about if your occupation does not consist of a AK47 then you just can't have 1 period

1,173 Americans are dead because of guns since the Newtown Massacre on Dec. 14, 2012. Congress MUST act. The NRA has lost sight of the needs of gun owners and gun rights advocates and have become a front for gun-makers, and Congress must shake off their poisonous lobbying.
No one is taking about taking anyones' guns. This is about limiting access to the preferred weapons of both single and mass-murders alike. To defend their right over ours to have a safe and orderly society makes no sense.
The Cold War mentality is now costing us all: Police need ever better weapons to be able to go up against criminals; we are paying more as taxpayers for ever more police, weapons, and bullet-proof protection. Never mind the millions (if not billions) of dollars lost through death, medical costs and lost wages owing to guns.
Enact strict background checks, end private and gun show sales, limit clip capacity, ammo strength and tax guns and gun-related material to support police, and public safety initiatives.
Really hoping they ban the scary looking ones. Enough is enough.
If we trusted our government more we might be more in support of things like an improved registration process.
And what exactly gives her the right to determine what is "necessary"?? I'm sorry but, you could ban every type of firearm in this country. Murders will still happen. Deal with the criminals and the criminal justice system. Don't just ban guns and think it will solve the problem.
All I am going to say on this is that I am from a town where everyone literally owns at least one gun, and the amount of gun crime is almost nothing. You would have to be a complete idiot to break into someone's house in Craig. I am not exaggerating or anything.
Sometimes the government has to protect people through legislation, ie: seat belts and this is one of those times.
No civilian needs an assault rifle & this legislation needs to happen.
