Graham and Cruz not bringing guns to gun hearing

Washington (CNN) – Despite their attempts, Republican senators Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz won't bring firearms to Wednesday's hearing on gun control after an unsuccessful attempt at appealing the security rules on Capitol Hill.

"We have not been able to navigate all the red tape and bureaucracy necessary to bring them into the hearing," Graham's spokesman Kevin Bishop told CNN. Wednesday's event, held in the Hart Senate Office Building, is the first congressional hearing on gun violence since the Connecticut school massacre that left 26 people dead.

Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, will be one of five witnesses at the hearing, along with former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly.

While Bishop, Graham's spokesman, said no one explicitly told the senators they couldn't bring the weapons in, he pointed to bureaucratic hurdles that prevent lawmakers from bringing guns to hearings. One of those is an assault weapon ban in the District of Columbia.

Instead, Bishop said Graham would use posters and photos of firearms at the hearing in place of the real thing

They also sent a letter to Sen. Patrick Leahy, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, requesting measures to help streamline the procedures to bring guns into the hearings in the future.

At an event last week announcing her proposed ban on assault weapons, Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California stood in front of a display of weapons, some of which are currently against the law in the District of Columbia. Democratic sources told CNN that Feinstein coordinated with police on being able to have the guns there.

On one side were pegboard panels mounted with various assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons - including a Bushmaster similar to the one used in last month's Newtown school massacre.

Confirmed. Many members of the Republican Party have lost their minds. Bring a gun into a Senate hearing? These guys really need to rethink their political strategies, especially over the long term. Talk about "stupid party".

Oh puuleeze. Enough grandstanding. Only in the Arizona Legislature do our "esteemed" Republican NRA shills come to work packin'. Mind you the rest of us have to pass through metal detectors and get strip-searched to enter the Capital.

Apparently Americans are going to have toFORCE the GOP to do the will of the people and not another slimely lobbyist like Grover Norquist, or in this case Crazy Wayne and the NRA.

Those two idiots should not be allowed anywhere near guns. Just when you think that those on the right can't sink any lower they surprise and dig a little deeper.

These people just don't get it. The NRA and GOP are only thinking about money, forget the people who are dying because of a fool getting their hands on assault weapons and killing anything in sight because they are unhappy with themselves and mad at the world. There is no need for a civilian to have assault weapons period. Please GOP/TP nut jobs do not come back with the 2 amendment because that song is getting old. Normal thinking people do not need assault weapons.

Ted Cruz has joined the Senate with what we call "Pepsi pressure", which comes in full force and after a short while disappears. Lindsey Graham, I do guess has been attacked with premature dementia, which in the long run will cause severe damage to himself and the entire society around him.

You were'nt able to to navigate all the red tape and bureaucracy??? What?? Isn't that what people in government do for a living?
Here's what really happened: somebody told you "Hell no, you crazy old coot".
    That is all.

  10. Facts don't Lie

maybe allowing guns on the Senate floor or the House might not be such a bad idea........I mean just think of all the possibilities..might be a way to get bills concerning gun violence moved through congress.

Does Graham hear a primary coming? That would explain the removal of common sense from his words in recent weeks. Cruz is a nut job, plain and simple, but Graham will abandon his rhetoric the second he is re-elected.

Feinstein got it done yet Graham couldn't pull it off. Kinda tells you something about the backwater nimrod from South Kakalakee doesn't it? Great at shooting off at the mouth disrespecting his President but yet totally incapable of putting together a simple show-and-tell.
    You elect these people.

There is no need to bring a weapon to a supposedly civil and honest discussion with members of Congress. This is only done to intimidate other people.

Can you imagine the melt down idiots like Graham would have if they applied the same level of anger they have over four dead Americans in Benghazi (because the host government failed to provide protection) to the over 1,400 Americans killed by gun violence in America since December 14. My word his head would simply blow off.
These people (Graham and Cruz) are trash, not worthy of real Americans or their votes!

Glad that security rules on Capitol Hill prevented Republican senators Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz to bring firearms to Senate hearing. Such weapons should not be in the hands of mentally sick/"stupid"/weak/unstable people. Thank you.

I *think* what fools like Graham don't get is that we Americans want the same safety they have- Gun-Free Zones. I shouldn't have to put up with militia wannabees who want to tote rifles and guns around to show off their political intent.

First this ChickenHawk Cruz accuses decorated military combat veterans Kerry and Hegel of hating the military, and then he wants to bring a gun to a Senate hearing??? For once I agree with Wayne LaPierre: mental illness plays too big a role in our nation's gun problems.
Now, if Cruz and LaPierre will get the treatment they need, and stay on their meds, all might be better soon.

  24. Former Republican, now an Independent

Graham is just one more republican in congress that has been "bought and paid for". The NRA is just one of the many big money organizations that "own" the current day republican party.

Nothing was ever said about people bringing firearms a McCain/Pailin campaign rally a few years ago. I was supposedly the right thing to do back then wasn't it. There is no one that is on this planet and I mean no one can explain to me why any person should own an assault weapon. This country has gone to the dogs!
