House Democrats huddle ahead of major legislative fights

Leesburg, Virginia (CNN) - Two and a half weeks after President Barack Obama laid out his ambitious second term priorities during his inauguration speech, his Democratic allies in the House of Representatives are huddling to plot how those goals can be met while Republicans hold control of the chamber.

On their plate are proposals enacting new restrictions on owning guns, comprehensive immigration reform and mandatory spending cuts – all issues where Democrats and Republicans have traditionally been unable to find common ground.

Rand Paul carves out own space on foreign policy

(CNN) - Sen. Rand Paul advanced his foreign policy views in a speech on Wednesday that appeared to be aimed at showing his fluency in that arena, particularly on radical Islam, the suspected Iranian nuclear weapons program, and U.S. military involvement.

On some of those issues, he sounded tones similar to his father, the former three-time presidential candidate and Texas Congressman Ron Paul. Rand Paul campaigned for his father, who drew attention for his libertarian views - which he described as non-interventionist but critics described as isolationist.

SI SE PUEDE: RUBIO TO DELIVER STATE OF THE UNION RESPONSE IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida will deliver the Republican response to the State of the Union address next week, House Speaker John Boehner's office announced Wednesday. An aide to the senator gave CNN a preview of his remarks: “It’s worth noting that his speech will focus on the Republican Party’s agenda to grow the middle class. Immigration will likely be mentioned as one way to grow the economy, but the speech really is about the Republican Party’s commitment to limited government as the best way to help the middle class, and how it differs from the President’s plans for bigger government.”
