Investigation opened into hacked Bush family e-mails

(CNN) – The United States Secret Service is investigating the hacking and publication of private e-mails between members of the Bush family, including former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, which were published online late Thursday.

"The Secret Service is investigating this matter," the agency's spokesman Ed Donovan told CNN on Friday.

Jim McGrath, spokesman to George H.W. Bush, said only that "we do not comment on matters under criminal investigation."

George W. Bush's spokesman also had no comment on the hacking.

The e-mails, which included some private photographs of the political family, delved into personal family topics, scheduling matters and contact information for dozens of extended Bush relatives.

The cache of hacked correspondence was posted on a gossip website Thursday, and included e-mails sent between 2009 and 2012.

Late last year, the elder President Bush spent more than a month in a Houston-area hospital after being admitted with bronchitis. He spent a week in intensive care as doctors treated a fever.

The hacked photographs unveiled Thursday included communications and photos during the time Bush was hospitalized.

At age 88, he is the oldest living president and is four months older than former President Jimmy Carter.

–CNN's Kevin Bohn, Gregory Wallace and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

In reading the comments, I can see that most of you partisans are still wearing blinders in thinking that there are still two sides of the political coin. Maybe its the watered down censorship CiaNN is so notable for or maybe it's just that so many people are still clueless. The smoking gun has this same story with all the lurid details and paints an interesting picture in how "bubba" Clinton is like a brother the "Dubba". These two families are best of friends behind the scenes and laugh at the st upid partisan schmucks that have kept them in power over the last 20 years. I honestly believe that Obozo's real power comes from the BushClinton dynasty. You may now return to your partisan snipping while the elites continue to r@pe and enslave you.

Reading your reactions are very depressing. There would have been a totally different tune if Obama or Clinton's emails have been hacked. Double standard much?

Bush senior brought us the first Gulf War, in service to his Saudi and Kuwaiti Royal friends. That brought us 9/11.
Jr. took us back again to finish off what his father started. He brought us 6,000 dead, 50,000 injured, 200,000 with PTSD and broken homes/ Between the father and son team America has lost $5+ trillion. We are precting the criminalss who nearly destroyed us and put us under surveillence. Only a Republican can do something like this and be proud.

Many haters out there, which is understandable, given the limited intellectual capabilities of the public. The fact is, our country was safe from any other terrorist attack for 7.5 years. Who knows what went on behind the scenes to ensure our safety and protect this freedom to constantly complain and slander political figures. He was probably quite well intentioned, just as most Presidents are, and yet he was placed in a position that no other leader of our country has had to face, along with a global threat unlike any other. Hindsight may show he was wrong, but if more attacks would have occurred on our soil, you idiots would be complaining that he was not tough enough.

    GIve the guy a break.

W's emails must all have been written by Laura because George surely isn't smart enough to learn how to use a computer.

Obviously improper, and perhaps even dangerous.

As an aside, IMO if you compare their pre-presidency resumes, H.W. outshines W. by a wide margin. H.W.'s presidency is underrated, especially by conservative extremists, while W.'s is given too much of a free pass.

History will be the judge. (BTW, I didn't vote for either of them.)

"W" shouldn't worry... You can't hack an Etch-A-Sketch and "Uncle Dick" wouldn't let him use the real computers.

@jkk, if you don't count the many dozens of our State Department people who died from terrorists on GWB's watch, in addition to the trivial events of 9/11. You think the public is dumb because they don't support the mental midget GWB, which only shows your own exceedingly limited capacity. But then being a FUX 'news' minion, we understand your pathetic intellectual ability. But you should stop maligning your betters.

I can not believe the posts condoning this hacking!!!! Why can't you be an American first and a Bush hater second. Just what until Obama and his family's e-mails get hacked......I guess then you MIGHT get upset at this violation.

Huge risk, no reward. This hacker will be very sorry soon. The tricky part will not be catching him but making it look like they catch him in a way that does not reveal how they actually catch him. Your twenty minutes of fame are coming soon!

Chuck .. give it up already .. Bush started the mess and Obama is having to clean it up .. It takes one a second to break a glass window, but takes hours to pick up all the pieces ... there wouldn't be as many individual deaths due to war in Obama's trems if Bush had not started the 2 wars ... no good back to your coloring books dear

Take it easy pal. I kinda like the old fella. I have to admit that though he was considered an average President, Sr. is a good family man and war veteran. We liberals won't forget that.
