Investigation opened into hacked Bush family e-mails

(CNN) – The United States Secret Service is investigating the hacking and publication of private e-mails between members of the Bush family, including former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, which were published online late Thursday.

"The Secret Service is investigating this matter," the agency's spokesman Ed Donovan told CNN on Friday.

Jim McGrath, spokesman to George H.W. Bush, said only that "we do not comment on matters under criminal investigation."

George W. Bush's spokesman also had no comment on the hacking.

The e-mails, which included some private photographs of the political family, delved into personal family topics, scheduling matters and contact information for dozens of extended Bush relatives.

The cache of hacked correspondence was posted on a gossip website Thursday, and included e-mails sent between 2009 and 2012.

Late last year, the elder President Bush spent more than a month in a Houston-area hospital after being admitted with bronchitis. He spent a week in intensive care as doctors treated a fever.

The hacked photographs unveiled Thursday included communications and photos during the time Bush was hospitalized.

At age 88, he is the oldest living president and is four months older than former President Jimmy Carter.

–CNN's Kevin Bohn, Gregory Wallace and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

Why do people do appalling things like this? Just because they can?
I say that law enforcement should show no mercy where none has been given.

Congress should pass a law making misdemeanors and minor crimes against a current or former POTUS a serious felony consumate with homicide.

I heard there were emails with angry arguments about how and why the plane to plant the WMD in Iraq failed.

I don't know if this should be classified as a comedy or a tragedy. It is definitely a crime! In any event!! If they are posted on line, I will not waste my time reading them. That was a period of our history that I would like to forget. It is time that we move on, end the wars, and try to rebuild our economy for children and Grand Children.

@Rush Pinhead – You do realize that more toops have been lost under Obama than in all of Bush's 8 years. Also, lets not forget about the American citizens that were killed in Bengazi as well as the ones taken out with the drone strike on his orders.

My sympaty goes out to the Bush family for having to deal with this on top of the President's health issues. It is sad that things like this go on, but not surprising that there are at least a few that are amused by something like this in a society where we not only tolerate the majority of the population being inept but also encourage and fund their breeding.

The sad truth is that there will always be criminals but those who choose to view these emails are just as wrong as those who did the hacking. No different than when terrorists uploaded video of an execution. Those who chose to view that video are just as disgusting.

George W. can write? Who knew?

But as much as I despise the Bush crime family, hacking private communications is a horrible thing. Not quite as horrible as lying about WMD, torture, and the deaths of over 100,000 people in Iraq, and so forth.

I hope they do publish all the emails so they can see George W. was a hero to the Tea Party folks like me. He got us in to 2 wars that have killed or permanently injured our military personnel. Just thing how the economy is moving ahead because of all the government checks going to all these disabled vets and some vets who just claim to be disabled. Lets all support George W. He made Halliburton richer and even found a place for Dick Cheney. So we need to support all these Bush Losers.

I do not understand why the taxpayers' money is being used to pay the Secret Service to investigate this. The Bushes are wealthy private citizens now, let the pay for an investigation. The Secret Service is charted with protecting them, as former presidents, and this is OK ... but hacking their email is NOT an assault on national security.

George Bush pushed for illegal wire tapping while president. The excuse; "if you have nothing to hide, you should not mind". Well, if George has nothing to hide, he should not mind his emails getting hacked.

I'd imagine the majority of these e-mails were discussing how best to approach a culture where so many people just expect hand-outs and want others to work to give them things which they did not earn. They probably discuss the insustainability of such a society and lament the fall of what was once a great country to the lazy, self-entitled, liberal population. If it wasn't so obvious, I'd say they should have voluntarily made these e-mails public.
