Washington (CNN) – Tea party leaders are turning to Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, to deliver their message following President Barack Obama's State of the Union address, a speech that will compete with the official Republican response.
Paul will make his remarks soon after Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, wraps up the GOP response Tuesday night, a Paul spokeswoman confirms to CNN.
"We are giving a voice to the tea party movement when the mainstream media and the Republican establishment wants to write us off as dead," said Amy Kremer, chairman of the Tea Party Express. This is the third year in a row that Kremer's organization has sponsored the tea party response.
The dueling GOP speeches come at a time when a very public rift is developing between the Republican establishment and conservative activists over the direction of the party. Some grassroots activists are specifically angry at Karl Rove and other Republicans for stating that they will choose sides in upcoming Republican primaries and only financially help candidates who have a chance of winning in the general election.
In Paul, tea party leaders have chosen a nationally known senator, who is identified more for his embrace of a libertarian ideology than aligning himself with his own political party's leaders.
The back-to-back addresses Tuesday night also features two young stars in the GOP, each of whom are expected to seriously consider running for the White House in 2016.
Paul will deliver his remarks before an audience at the National Press Club, which is located just a stones throw away from the White House.
"We expect many of our supporters and many of Rand Paul's supporters, freedom loving, liberty loving Americans to be there because this is our time to be heard," Kremer said. "We are proud that Marco Rubio is giving the official Republican Party response because he is a tea party conservative and one of our own. But the Republican Party doesn't necessarily speak for all conservatives and the tea party movement has its own voice and this is our chance to be heard."
Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minnesota, delivered the tea party response in 2011, while Herman Cain gave it last year. Both candidates unsuccessfully sought the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.
I am really confused here. Is Sen. Rand a member of the Republican Party or the Tea Party? Or is it since the Republican Party chose Sen. Rubio to give the GOP response to the President's State of the Union Address and both men have aspiractions for the Presidency that Sen. Rand decided that he needed his 5 minutes of TV coverage and fame to advance his aspirations resulting in becoming a Tea Partier, at least for the night?
I propose that any and all potential politicians with aspirations to occupy the Office of the President of the United States be given equal opportunity to give a nationally televised response to the State of the Union address.
Wha Wha Wha...a black president was not what i grew up believing to ever happen in america...wha wha wha...people of color are destroying this country...wha wha wha...screw science and research, conspiracy theories matter more...wha wha wha
Eventually these baby-boomers will become irrelevant to the conversation when their children start voting on reality based issues.
I basically think almost the entire Congress if more useless than teats on a bore hog. Im all for totally new blood. Im sick of the status quo.
Go away. Go far, far away. No one cares about Rand, what Rand stands for, or anyone that looks like Rand.
In what language.....?
This should be funny.
1, 2, 3, 4, I declare a GOP civil war.
Who's got the popcorn?
I'm laughing already! Love seeing these guys eating there own. Circular firing squad anyone?
Since the TeaParty is defining itself as separate from the Republican party, doesn't that make a Democratic as the majority party in the House?
I wish some of you freedom hating Idiots would at least learn to spell.
First Bachman, then Cain, and now Paul........what a hand to draw to! Kind of makes you wonder what clown will come out of the clown car for next years speech. I don't understand how they got equal billing with the media.......where is the response from the Green Party, or the Libertarian Party, or the Independent Party?
these comments make me not want to live on this planet anymore.
so we have to have a Republican response, then a Tea Party response...heck why not a Green Party response or a Liberterian Party response? This is just plain whack. And the approval rating of the Tea Partyi is so low why should anyone even care.
If gop republican party want 2 have any relavancy they better start voting on the side of the american ppl and let go of tea party strings or they will all go down n flames. Doesnt hurt my feelings any just my country!
I might tune in just to say I heard it with my own two ears – although I am not sure how much I can take. Something about that man's voice and his intonation just makes me crazy(er).
Do you all have your heads screwed on wrong?? First off, I don't give a flying fart in the wind about party affiliation. I lost respect for BOTH parties shortly after Reagan left office. I judge politicians by using a very simple BS meter system. Do they answer questions coherently, or dodge around them and try to change the subject? That weeds out 85% of the politicians right there. Now that we are down to a handful of politicians that you can get a straight answer out of, we simply decide who isn't completely off their rocker. Simple.
Simply put Rand Paul is the ONLY politician these days that makes any sense what-so-ever! While most of congress is busy **** blocking each other, he's actually trying to get something useful done!
All of you need to ditch your labels, left, right conservative, liberal, republican, democrat.. WHO CARES?? The country is going to hell in a hand basket at a quick rate, and if we can't get our act together and start doing something right, then maybe we do deserve an economy that mostly resembles a train wreck!!
That rant was in jest. Maybe.
Might as well give the mic to a dancing monkey.
That wold be more entertaining than listening to that fake doctor whackjob Rand
The comments on here just spew hatred and ignorance, and anybody wonders why the Republic(notice I didn't say democracy) is in such a lovely state of existence.
Here we have an individual that there should be no place for in modern society. My opinion of this gentleman stems from words that have passed through his very own lips, like businesses should have the right to discriminate against anyone they like. A person with thoughts like that will only return us as a nation to the dark ages. Just about everything this person stands for seems to me to be contrary to what this still great nation is all about. The fewer Rand Pauls we have, the better off we will be.
So,now the GOP is a two parties system? Why don't the sane republicans sever ties with the tea people crazies?
Beautifully articulated, James Long! For years I've been saying that there is NO difference between the Repubs and the Dems. They want us "fighting" over nonsense and semantics while they BOTH are busy raping, robbing and pillaging us into eternal darkness,
