Palin urges Obama to express condolences for slain ex-Navy SEAL

(CNN) – Sarah Palin said she hopes President Barack Obama "pays his respects" to the slain former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, who was killed at a shooting range by a fellow veteran on February 2.

In Dallas for the funeral, the former Alaska governor said she and her husband "find it sad to see that flags aren't flying at half staff for this American hero."

"We're surrounded today by American patriots here in Texas – by Chris' fellow veterans and active duty warriors," she wrote on Facebook Monday morning. "In honor of them, I hope our commander in chief pays his respects in some gesture of condolence for their comrade in arms who sacrificed so much to keep him and all of us safe."

Kyle, who was 38, served four combat tours in Iraq and received two Silver Stars, among other commendations. He left the Navy in 2009. He was most known for declaring himself the "most lethal sniper in U.S. history" with more than 150 sniper killings in Iraq, which he described as a record for any American.

"We may never know to what extent Chris kept us free or how many lives he saved by his brave actions in the line of fire. But his fellow warriors know how important he was," Palin wrote.

Shortly after his death, Palin wrote on Facebook that she had lost a friend. She explained that she and her husband, Todd, first met Kyle in Pella, Iowa, when he helped out with security for the premiere of "The Undefeated," a documentary about Palin that debuted in June 2011.

"Later we became friends with Chris when he was on 'Stars Earn Stripes' with Todd," she said, referring to the NBC reality show in which competitors took on missions based on military exercises.

"Chris was a wonderful man, a good friend, and a true American hero who loved our country and served honorably," she continued. "He was loved and admired by so many, and he will never be forgotten."

Gee instead of just spouting off unintellingently why doesn't she look up the requirements it takes about 2 minutes. In this case The Governor of Texas could order the flags flown at half staff within the region. If he [ Chris Kyle] was on active duty, then the president could order the same within the region on federal facilities. Oh I forgot, you don't read.

    Dear Completely Disgusted,

The only disgusting thing here is that horrid Palin finding a way to get her name in the news because someone was murdered. She doesn't any more care about that guy than my cat does. Way to be fooled by one of the worst Americans in the history of our country.

Sarah Palin is a true patriot. That is something you cannot say about Pres. Obama. He went to Las Vegas while our servicemen were being murdered in Benghazi.

Flags are flown at half mast when a verteran dies in the line of duty – not after they have left the service. Otherwise the flags would be at half mast every fricking day.

"it would be impossible to dispute the fact that he was a HERO "

The man murdered insurgents fighting to free their country from illegal invaders and then bragged about it. No hero in my book.

Mr. Disgusted, if we start flying flags at half mast every time a soldier dies, we'd run out of flags.

Obama has probably already commented on this. What Palin thinks should happen is irrelevant.

I beg CNN to stop making our brains shrink fast by bringing whatever this quitter says. We do not gain anything from what she says, instead we are losing.

Yeah, well, we find it sad to see that your inane opinions get flown at full mast all over the freekin airwaves/intertubes by the feckless MSM.

Perhaps Sarah could lobby for better mental health treatment for veterans, but that would make too much sense.

Time to say it. Trying to treat PTSD with firearms is a little kookey. He may have been a fine soldier but should have left the therapy with those who are trained.

the President can order that the U.S. Flag be flown at half-staff whenever he wishes. the problem faced by the President is making everyone happy when such a request has been made. Ms. Palin does/says anything she can to stay in the public eye. If the President did make such a request for this murdered ex-SEAL then she would have found something else to comment about. I have said this before, if one day President Obama was seen walking on water, she would complain that he didn't wash his feet first.

So, "Sarah Palin is a true patriot.".. is she? Really? Could've fooled me. All she cares about is making news, no matter how.

Okay, Sarah. And if Pres. Obama had done what you asked, wouldn't you have accused him of politicizing a tragedy?

    @ Completely Disgusted.

Sorry, dude, but Chris Kyle died as a civilian and not in the line of duty. Granted, he was trying to help a vet with PTSD, but Kyle handed the poor guy a weapon! I remember the story of a WWII vet who came back from an isle invasion in the Pacific. While in a theater watching a newsreel of the very battle he had been in, the sights and sounds triggered a PTSD event where he crammed his wife between the seats, yelling at her "I told you to keep your head down!" as he leaped forward over the seats as if reliving his charge up the beach. He, of course, remembers nothing of what he did until waking up with his buddy sitting on his chest, the movie had been stopped and the house lights were on.

So when Kyle handed the other vet the weapon it was like a game of Russian roulette–it was only a matter of time before a PTSD vet came 'unglued' and turned the weapon on him. So, if anything, it was Kyle's own fault as he didn't realize what he was doing.

So for that, no, I don't think he deserves half staff, especially seeing as he wasn't even in the military any more. I know he was trying to help, but in this case he just poured gasoline onto a fire and the result was tragic for him. I agree it's sad, but not worthy any extra military recognition. IMHO.

For starters, Mr. Kyle wasn't killed in the line of duty. Is dim bulb barbie suggesting we fly the flag at half-staff every time a servicemember dies? Frankly, Mr. Kyle's untimely death can be attributed to his irresponsible actions – had he not brought his killer to the range, most likely he would still be alive, so what does dim bulb barbie think an appropriate condolence should sound like under such circumstances.

That being said, was she invited to the funeral or did she just show up in an attempt to appear relevant?

To me a true hero does his job, serves his country then goes about life's work. They do not go on to capitalize on killing 150 people, not matter how bad they are. The last thing most veterans I know want to talk about is whether they killed anyone.

Why doesn't she stop now? Why doesn't she just go away and stay away from cameras and people. Hasn't she created enough divisions in this country? Why doesn't she simply go back home and do America a favor. Perhaps she can keep an eye on Russia from her porch and let the President know if Putin's coming this way?
