Christie challenger injured in car crash

Washington (CNN) – The woman who hopes to unseat New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie suffered a cut to her face in a car crash as she left a campaign event Monday evening.

The crash involving Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono happened in Franklin Township, New Jersey. The Jeep Wrangler she was riding in failed to yield to an oncoming Ford Escape when pulling into traffic, according to a statement from local police.

"It was just a minor crash. She was on her way back from a campaign event," David Turner, communications director for Buono's campaign, told CNN.

"An aide was driving the car and was making a turn. And then got hit by an oncoming car," Turner said. Buono was riding in the back seat and was not wearing a seatbelt.

Turner added: "She got a cut on her forehead. And they brought her to the hospital for precautionary reasons. And she was released last night."

Sergeant Philip Rizzo, spokesman for the Franklin Township Police Department, also characterized Buono's injuries as minor.

According to Turner, Buono - who is a New Jersey state senator - is feeling "pretty good" after the crash.

"She was looked at [at a hospital] and given a clean bill of health and then sent on her way," Turner said. "She's working. So I think she's feeling pretty good."

Turner said the candidate does not have stitches.

The driver of the Jeep carrying Buono suffered cuts to his arm but refused treatment at the scene, according to police. The driver of the other vehicle refused treatment at the scene but noted pain from the airbag and seatbelt activation.

Buono is the only major Democrat to announce a candidacy to unseat Christie, the popular Republican New Jersey governor. The New Jersey election will take place in November.

We need everyone to remember that seat belts are for everyone seated in the car. She escaped serious injury but could have been hurt seriously. This is going to be a distraction to her campaign.

Her campaign has to focus hard on what Christie hasn't done - focused on poor and those that aren't making it. His attitude of cutting taxes on the wealthy isn't helpful for what the state needs. We need more efficient government that has all the departments talking to one another when they interact. The state needs to look at programs that help the poor and see how much they pump into the economy. This is just a start.
