A refreshed Rubio says 'I needed water'

(CNN) – Sen. Marco Rubio continued to poke fun at himself Wednesday morning after his now-famous sip of water made a big splash during the Republican response to the State of the Union.

"God has a way of reminding us that we're human, every now and then," Rubio said in Spanish on CNN en Español's "Café."

Rubio could be seen wiping drips of sweat off his face a few times during his response Tuesday night. Then at one point, he paused and lunged sideways–still looking at the camera–to grab a small bottle of water and take a swig.

The junior senator from Florida gave his 15-minute address shortly after taping the same speech in Spanish. But, Rubio said Wednesday, he didn't "need the water then."

"This only happened in English!" Rubio joked, adding that his mouth "was very dry from speaking so much."

"These things happen," he continued.

The senator himself acknowledged the awkward break on Twitter after the speech, and the moment instantly went viral.

"It's famous now," Rubio said, referring to the photo of the water bottle that spread quickly online. "And I think they've given that company a lot of publicity."

The water company said they've indeed seen an "enthusiastic response" Wednesday.

"We are delighted that in Senator Rubio's moment and need of refreshment, Poland Spring was right there on hand for him. Just like millions know, water is a great refresher. We think he had a great sense of humor about it all," said Poland Spring spokesperson Jane Lazgin told CNN.

Asked about the thirsty episode on a separate morning news show, Rubio jokingly reached over–out of the shot–to grab a water bottle and take a sip.

"I needed water. What am I going to do, you know?" he said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

On CBS' "This Morning," Rubio was asked if the he needed water because he was nervous.

"No, when you talk a lot, it happens," he said.

During speeches with podiums, he added, speakers normally have some water right there in front of them.

"When you're standing up in front of a camera, you don't have that option," he said. "It had been a long day at work. I already taped an 18-minute speech in Spanish, so I'm just glad the water was nearby, I don't know what I would have done without it."

Really, are we really making a big deal about this? Give me a break. The man was trying to get his point across and maybe he was a little nervous. He had very little time to write his rebuttal and was trying to do the best he could, we have nothing better to talk about. SO WHAT HE NEEDED A DRINK OF WATER. CNN, quit hyping this up. You must really need the ratings.

Yes, I understand. Invisible sky fairies do have to remind us that we are human beings every once in a while, and that we are not the Easter Bunny. Thanks for that profound revelation.

Rubio price to be a member of the GOP; vote against Woman rights, minority rights, senior citizens’ rights, voting rights, education legislation, health care reform, cuts to Social Security, cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, and no tax for the rich, etc. the list is so long that he need to stop take a break and drink some water; and persuade the non-Cuban Spanish Americans to join the party…

Oh my goodness: Another Water-Gate, or perhaps BottleGate?
They taped his statements, but they didn't know where the "pause" button was or how to edit? (our future leaders in technology development?)
Little straight-A schoolboy was caught swigging one?
Of course anyone can get a dry mouth in front of cameras. So why not pause, have a glass or bottle next to you, like Speaker Boehner had on his desk? -AND He sure looked like a dry-mouthed cottonmouth-
Instead Rubio thought he could hoodwink the audience, just like his mediocre SOTU response was trying to pull another one like the GOP has been doing since George W. It's symptomatic for the entire GOP approach to the public and the electorate.

Why is everyone attacking Rubio? Over a drink of water, no less. Why isn't anyone speaking of the President's speech being more of the same. Raise revenue (which we all know is codespeak for raising taxes), spend more, blame someone else for our problems, etc. He is definitely a great speaker but I'm really tired of the rhetoric. I'm also sick of the media trying to tip the scales to the far left and ridicule anything remotely conservative. I'm an independent that likes to look at both sides. This administration (and it's buddies in the media) seem to want to eliminate the party system from our politics and convert everyone democrats. We all need to remember that there is a vast chunk of the country that remains fairly conservative. It just happens to be the part of the country that is portrayed as the wasteland that people only fly over when going from the liberal west coast to the liberal east coast. We have a voice, too, and don't like being ignored by the majority of the media. I'm right down the middle on most issues and I know liberal rhetoric when I hear it. I definitely heard it last night.

He needs a heck of a lot more than water! This sounded more like the typical GOP put down of our President. We need to work together for solutions not continue the polarizing BS. Can't wait until 2014 to vote ass bites like this out! It's about America, not your freakin' obsolete party, Rubio!

You're right this isn't news, the sweeting and going after the water was commic relief; to the otherwise sad commentary that the GOP learned nothing from the election. Guy's it's not the packaging it's the package. If you ever want to win another national election it might be a good idea to adjust your policies. Most people are not stupid enough to believe the GOP is making any substantative changes towards reality.

Easy to explain that "I needed a glass of water," but the appearance was one of nervousness, unprofessionalism, and mostly screaming: I'm not ready for prime time. Rubio was undoubtedly sweating as he betrayed his own family's history and legacy by standing up to be the puppet of those who would have readily deported his own father. Rubio's own politics were implanted in him by his uncle. Look at almost any Republican's history and you'll find some loud mouthed family blowhard who had access to him for programming nonstop for 10+ years.
