Washington (CNN) - With a little over two weeks before automatic spending cuts hit all federal agencies, House Speaker John Boehner said they are "bad policy" but restated his position that the House will not act to replace the so called "sequester," saying it was up to the Senate to pass a bill to lay out alternative cuts.
"We've played our cards, we laid out our hand - passed those bills and nothing happened. It' time for the Senate to do its job," Boehner told reporters on Capitol Hill.
Boehner is also expected to send out a letter Wednesday to all House members telling them to prepare for the impact of the cuts, which will also force all lawmakers, committees and administrative offices to cut their budgets.
"We're prepared to deal with it and I would hope that it wouldn't happen," Boehner said.
But when asked whether he would personally take a pay cut, the speaker sidestepped the question.
Even with the deadline looming on March 1st and defense officials and government agencies warning that the impact could trigger another recession and damaging cuts could undermine national security, there is no bipartisan solution on the horizon.
In the last Congress, the GOP-led House passed the same measure twice to replace the across the board cuts with another set of federal reductions, but that bill went nowhere in the Democratic controlled Senate. Senate Democrats are expected to roll out their own proposal this week, with a mix of spending cuts and new revenue. But Congressional Republicans have made it clear any tax increases to avoid the sequester are a non-starter.
Boehner criticized the automatic spending cuts, even though they were part of a debt ceiling proposal he brokered, and has worked to pin the blame for them on Democrats.
"The sequester is bad policy. It's taking a meat ax approach to cutting government spending. That's why the President ought to be forthcoming with a plan to replace his own sequester," the speaker said.
You just have to love the GOP. The bold and outright LIE that they are trying to make truth that the President cobbled together the disasterous bill that is the Sequestration is so bold and without truth, that we really need to think about drug testing these fools, or seeking some sort of competency hearings on then as they are clearly living a rich fantasy life devoid of reality.
The GOP may be this century's ultimate lost cause!
So Bush signed the "Bush Tax Cuts" into law and they became the "Bush Tax Cuts for the Rich" even though Democrats voted for them. Then Obama signed the extension of the "Bush Tax Cuts for the Rich" into law, yet they remained the "Bush Tax Cuts for the Rich" when they were legally the "Obama Tax Cuts for the Rich".
WRong on both counts:
First, the GOP used reconciliation BOTH TIMES to force the Bush Tax Cuts to be passed. Why? To prevent the Dems from blocking them.
Second, Obama signed the extension of the Bush tax cuts solely as a compromise to get the GOP/Teatrolls to stop blocking everything that needed to happen during the lame duck session in 2010...i.e., the new START nuclear proliferation treaty, extension of unemployment benefits for those suffering during the recession, repeal of DADT, etc. You don't get to push relentlessly for something so hard that you force someone who doesn't want it to go along with you, but then turn around and blame that person for it happening.
rs got that one right.....
And NOW, with no George Bush in sight to blame, the "OBAMA Sequestration Cuts" which HE SIGNED INTO LAW,
This one is real easy, Donna. They are called the Bush Tax Cuts, because he called for them, and Congress cobbled the bill together, passed it and he signed it.
The Sequester IS NOT calle the Obama Sequester because it was born in the GOP/TEA Party controlled House, and passed by the Senate. All Mr. Obama did was sign the bill into law- That is what the Republicans wanted.
Note the sublte difference?
Now the fact that the self-paralized GOP is unabe to change their course legislatively or philosophically has them quite panicked. Like their ill-advised Government shut down under Clinton- sending the U.S. economy into a tail-spin (AGAIN) they know will cause them to be the most hated party in American History- Thus they lie, and twist and squeal and call it the Obama Sequester.
Pretty much they are the worst, gutless, cowards on Earth.
rs- Goggle it- the sequestration idea came out of the White House and approved by both houses. Jack Lew was the probable source of resurrecting the idea from 1985.
The Republicans are really off of their rockers. That is all that I have to say here. Such a shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That would make Harry Reid do his job. Listen we are going to go whistling through the sequester and I will be laughing all the way. Its going to be painful on defense but that was by design by the Narcissist and Chief. He is all for pulverizing the military but don't dare touch his handouts. Well either way cuts are coming and Congress can pick and choose what to assist in late March or April. That is the only way with the non-negotiator.
I'm confused. The Republicans say the President refuses to make cuts, then say Sequestation is the Presidents idea. Throughout the late Presidential campaign they said the President "cut" $710B out of Medicare. How much more do they want hinm to cut? Were they lying then, or are they lying now or are they not cronic and habitual liars?
Everything the GOP does is bad policy and bad for our country.
"rs- Goggle it- the sequestration idea came out of the White House and approved by both houses. Jack Lew was the probable source of resurrecting the idea from 1985."
First, the specifics of this sequestration deal were not Obama's idea.
Second, 2/3 of the vote FOR this sequestration deal was GOP votes and Boehner hailed it as him getting '98% of what I wanted."
Fact: There is no honest, non-smirking, non-shenanigan way to argue that sequestration is somehow all Obama's fault.
