Poll: Clinton, Rice top list of who would make a good president

Washington (CNN) - The last two secretaries of state top a new list that looks towards the next presidential election.

Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Condoleezza Rice are one and two in a national poll that asks simply whether this "person would make a good president or not?"

Out of a list of a dozen possible 2016 White House hopefuls, 55% of people questioned in a Fox News national survey say that Clinton, who stepped down earlier this month as secretary of state, would make a good president. Forty-two percent said Clinton would not make a good president.

Even though the next presidential campaign is still a long way away, there's already intense speculation over whether Clinton will make a second bid for president. When asked in a recent CNN interview if she's decided against another candidacy for president, Clinton responded that "I have absolutely no plans to run."

But she added that "I am lucky because I've been very healthy. I feel great. I've got enormous amounts of energy that have to be harnessed and focused, so I'm very fortunate. I'm looking forward to this next chapter in my life, whatever it is."

In second place in the survey is Rice, with 43% saying she would make a good president and an equal amount disagreeing. Rice served as national security adviser and then secretary of state under President George W. Bush. Her well received speech at last summer's Republican convention in Tampa, Florida sparked some speculation that she might have designs on running for president, but she has tamped down on such speculation in interviews.

Following Clinton and Rice in the polls at 37% are New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, last year's GOP vice presidential nominee, with Vice President Joe Biden at 35%.

About a quarter questioned in the survey say former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio, the state's junior senator, would make good presidents. Governors Andrew Cuomo of New York and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana were at 16%.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick were at 6%, with Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley at 5%.

Breaking down the numbers, 83% of self-identified Democrats questioned say Clinton would make a good president, with Biden in second place at 60%. Among self-identified Republicans, 62% say Ryan would make a good president, with 54% saying the same thing about Rice.

The Fox News poll was conducted Feb. 4-6, with 1,010 people nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Condoleezza Rice is also qualified but probably won't pass the purity test of Tea Party and social conservatives in the primaries.

I don't know. After her lie about "nobody could have imagined they'd use airplanes as weapons" when clearly that was her concern when she insisted the dauphin prince be sequestered on a private yacht in anchored in the harbor instead of a land-based hotel like all other attendees at the G-8 Summit in Italy ONE MONTH PRIOR TO SEPTEMBER 11, and her fun-filled shoe shopping extravaganze & Broadway play attendances while New Orleans drowned neither she nor anyone else from that eight-year reign of error is fit for anything beyond picking up dog waste.

I think the Clinton has the smart, savvy, experience and insider know-how to be a good leader. If she runs, I'll back her. I also think Rice is a worthy consideration, but unfortunately, she's going to carry the baggage knows as the Republican Party along if she runs. Unless the GOP does an abrupt about face and starts acting like they don't live in the 16th century on social issues, Rice would have an uphill battle.

If Rice would have run, Obama probably would not have had a second term. She will clean Clinton's clock if they both run.

rice, like every other member of the dauphin prince's crew is a war criminal who can't leave the country because she would be arrested on a warrant. Her past is so damning I would like to see her run just to watch her try to defend the indefensible.

Condoleezza Rice??? How could anyone even consider her. She was a big part of the Iraq war. The country we invaded for absolutely no reason. The country where over 3,000 Americans died, and probably around 100,000 innocent Iraq people were killed. Please have some common sense.

Maybe Hillary can turn water into wine according to the Liberals. In my book she can't even run the State Department how can she run the Presidency?

I would gladly vote for Hillary, but Condi, NOT. She spent too many years on her knees for the shrub. I don't trust anything that comes out of her mouth.

What do you have to say about that republicans??? I guess I didn't get the memo that blacks vote for color.

I guess that's why Obama was reelected by a huge margin. Try again.

I have all the respect in the world for Rice. She has a strong education and superior knowledge. BUT, she is not presidentual material. She does not have the command ablity or the strength to carry out the hard decisions. She is too quiet and reserved. There also is the question of her false statements on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. She has said specifically, that she does not want to run for elective office. I believe she knows what she is talking about. Leave her alone and let do what she enjoys. She is doing a good job. While it is true that the Republicans do not have a strong canidate at this time, one could yet emerge.

To hear Wolf Blitzer, taking a drink of water while making a speech disqualifies one for the Presidency, but admitted hard drug use doesn't. Just some of that good old-fashioned logic from the liberals.

Hillary Clinton as President? you've got to be kidding. Her failure to protect our people and consulate in Benghazi, and no where to be found for weeks after, her involvement with the Rose Law Firm scandal in Arkansas and her subsequent coverup, and the fact that when she and Bill were in the White House she would not allow a military person to enter in uniform, and it was reported that she said loathed the military. She is nothing more than an old 1960s reincarnated "Hippie."

Remember the middle ages time of the inqusitions when Good was called evil and evil was called good. When you either agreed with the masters of power or you died. When logig and reason was completely thrown out along with real religious beliefs in favor of fanatic beliefs. Thsi is the same time we went through with Hitler and Benito Mussolini
Now we have another mad man and buch of lunatics follwing the mad man who believes he is GOD and no others can know what he knows or have a better solution than he does or even have the right to disagree with him. If they do they are denegraded, chatized called names and attacked. Same as happened under hittler and other mad men. Welcome ot the new GOD Obama same as the other master haters of world history. Now either Clinton or rice would be better of course but how could anyone compare Clinton a total failure in every way to Rice a toal winner in every way. That is proof of the insanty in America,. Clinton just got 4 people killed. She has been the absolute wose SEC. State ever. Even so she would still be better than Obama.

I wouldn't vote for Condi Rice with somebody else's vote much less mine. She willingly sullied herself and her reputation for a worthless, easily-manipulated, village idiot who left our economy near-death, and who sent our men and women in uniform off to die and to kill innocents in a country that had done NOTHING to us.
A shameful period in our history and she's all over it.
