(CNN) - Sen. Marco Rubio appears to be capitalizing on his really awkward reach for water Tuesday night on national television, as he gave the Republican response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address.
The senator from Florida and possible 2016 GOP presidential hopeful was quick to react to the much talked about incident, which went viral on-line, and may be able to gain politically from all the attention.
Rubio's political action committee, Reclaim America PAC, which was founded by the senator to help elect conservatives to public office, emailed supporters Wednesday night offering an "official line of Marco Rubio water bottles."
The pricetag? $25.
An official with the PAC told CNN Thursday morning that 2,000 of the water bottles had been sold since 8 pm E.T. Wednesday night.
"If you've watched the media coverage … you might think that Marco spent the entire time gulping gallons of water," the missive to supporters read, arguing the media focus on the sip was intended to distract from the Florida Republican's message.
"What he said was too conservative, too convincing and frankly too inspiring for some in the media and their liberal allies," the letter said. "So instead of attacking his message they attack the messenger. We've seen it before but it won't work this time."
"Don't get angry at the liberals who want to bury what Marco said. Laugh at them," the note concluded, with a link where backers could purchase the Rubio-branded water bottles.
Rubio himself pitched the water bottles to his Twitter followers, and the episode has increased his number of followers.
"Picked up over 13,000 new followers on #twitter since last night! Im going to start drinking #water in the middle of all of my speeches!" said Rubio on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.
- CNN's Paul Steinhauser and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report
A glass of water at the ready would have been nice. A plastic bottle? Really?
Rubio....much to nervous and he spoke from one of Romney's campaign speeches! How sad is that?? And he wants to be POTUS in 2016....ain't happening!!
that sounds so North Korean. "dont listen to what the world says, that is because they are jealous of the developed comfortable life that we N. Koreans live.. ha..ha.. ".
How long it take the police get to botton a simple battery case in this country. Enough " is enough not to mention national security for eyes only with close mouth people.
He was "too convincing," that's why people are talking about the water. Yeah that's it.
It was a standard-issue GOP speech, with the same talking points that Mitt Romney used.If Rubio had been replaced by a GOP bot built by an MIT undergrad, nobody would have known the difference. There was nothing else to talk about *but* the water.
@KP – It's amazing how uninformed most of you who follow cnn are Marco Rubio hit it out of the park unlike The President whos speech was nothing but untruths. I don't understand how you can focus in on ” the water bottle” but not see what's happening to OUR country.
Rubio didn't even knock off home plate.. if you'd watched you'd know that. It was a regurgitated GOP stump speech with nothing new. The fact that the RW supporters can't even recognize that speaks volumes. What Is happening to our country is that the Grand Obstructionist Party is succeeding in its divisive attempt to turn the country into a quagmire and make it ripe for the illuminati's take-over.
