Biden gives parenting advice, reloads shotgun line

(CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden explained the importance of gun safety to parents Tuesday with this analogy:

"You keep the cookies on the second shelf so they can't reach and then grab them all the time. People should not be in a position where their children have access to weapons and ammunition," he said.

He advocated for the gun violence reduction proposals President Barack Obama has advanced in an online chat on Tuesday sponsored by Parents Magazine. Biden answered questions submitted to the magazine by parents - including one question on how gun control could reduce individuals' ability to defend themselves.

Repeating advice he's offered previously, Biden again advocated for the shotgun in home defense.

"If you want to protect yourself, get a double-barreled shotgun," he said. "Have the shells of a 12-gauge shotgun and I promise you - as I told my wife … 'Jill, if there is ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony here, walk out, put that double barreled shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house. I promise you whoever is coming in is not going to.' "

The shotgun, he said, is more effective than an assault-style weapon such as the AR-15, which he said "is harder to aim, it is harder to use. … Buy a shotgun."

Biden has become the Obama administration's public face on gun control, first leading a group Obama tasked with meeting various stakeholders on the gun control issue and then promoting the platform in a series of ongoing public appearances. He will attend a gun violence conference on Thursday near Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 students and six adults were killed by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December.

In the online chat, Biden said he does not favor constitutional amendments to refine or adjust the Second Amendment, which as the constitutional source of gun rights is cited by both proponents and opponents to make their cases.

"The constitution does allow the government to conclude that there are certain types of weapons that no one can legally own," Biden said in the online chat. "Now if that were not the case then you should be able to legally go buy a flamethrower that the military has; you should be able to go - if you're a billionaire - buy an F-15 loaded with ordnance; you should be able to buy an M-1 tank; you should be able to buy a machine gun; you should be able to buy a grenade launcher."

The limits are imposed for "public safety," he said, and the Second Amendment allows space to "eliminate assault weapons and limit the number of shells or bullets in a magazine."

An assault weapons ban proposed by Obama and several members of Congress, however, is not expected to pass. The president's proposal also includes making background checks before gun sales universal, increasing police resources, and improving the mental health care and reporting system.

Biden is such a dummy, gaffe after gaffe, and the lamestream media of which CNN is a part just keeps ignoring his buffoonery and pretends the idiot is actually serious. Just like with Obama - lie after lie - yet the LSM pundits keep acting like he's "telling the truth this time". They never learn...or is it just an act for all the rubes watching out in TV land?

Whatever, the lamestream media has no credibility. Their all just propagandists to one degree or another.

Sounds a lot like he's advocating infringement to me...there's no reason the military should be able to have any more or less protection than a citizen.

Humm load the shotgun with 12 gauge? What if it's not a 12 gauge shotgun ? Fire the shotgun & prepare to receive a whole bunch of agitated police responding to your neighbors 911 calls. They will possibly explain that discharging a fire arm in the city & fireing a "warning" shot both illegial. So biden thinks just firing projectials off a good idea? Where do they go? This from obamas gun czar!!??

Shame he doesn't know what he's talking about.
Go to Nevada, there are collectors there with Tanks, flamethrowers, bazookas, and artillery pieces.
These collectors don't have any special permits other than the NFA stamp that any law abiding citizen can get.
So Joe after your wife fires off those 2 blasts what is she going to do when the intruders DON'T go away.
You do know that some criminals can count up to two don't you?

First, Himmden advocates recklessly firing a 12 ga. shotgun OUTSIDE to deter a break-in. Can you say, "collateral damage?" Then, he says the 2nd Amendment allows the government to control what weapons citizens can possess. WRONG! In the 1700s, the government forces had muskets – same as the citizens. It was the authors' intent for the populace to have the same weapons as the government forces. By that standard, we SHOULD be allowed to possess flamethrowers, grenade launchers, machine guns, etc., because the government forces possess them. The populace can't use shotguns & bolt-action rifles to defend against a tyrannical government's forces which are armed with assault rifles, machine guns, tanks, etc.

Millionares can buy machine guns, Mr. Biden – and your laws are the reason why only the rich can afford them.

Shotguns are great, but the government does not get to choose which arms I use to defend my home any more than they get to choose the home I live in or the brand of peanut butter in the pantry.

The government can, Constitutionally, descide that there are some arms that noone is allowed to own – of course that begins with the government not using them (Miller with SBS's). What the government cannot do is say that "these guns are okay for the military, but not for the militia."

Biden needs to read more... US military doesn't use flame throwers anymore, but there are also no issues owning one as long as you're not a felon...Very few restrictions.

    "...you don't >NEED< an AR15..."

The second amendment is not about needs, it is about rights.

CNN doesn't NEED free speech, but they have and enjoy the right to it.
Women don't NEED to vote, but that is their right.
Slaves didn't NEED to be freed, but they were.
Criminals don't NEED a fair, speedy trial by their peers but they have a right to one.

This is not about NEEDS, it is about RIGHTS. Every American's rights as guaranteed by the constitution. It is not up to the government to determine our needs, although they seem to think it is their privilege.

Wake up America. Whether you agree or disagree about gun control, gun BANS infringe on your rights. Will you give up your rights, willingly? And if it's a specific type of gun, or a particular capacity magazine, will it be a certain religion, or certain topic next?

Punish the criminals who use tools illegally, not the law-abiding citizens who choose to exercise their RIGHTS to keep and bear arms.

"...the Second Amendment allows space to "eliminate assault weapons and limit the number of shells or bullets in a magazine." No, Mr. Vice President, it does not. Please reread the second amendment, there are not exceptions. There is no clause that says unless the government decides it's for "public safety". The amendment is absolute, not conditional. Not anymore than the right to practice any kind of religion.

    "...shall not be infringed..."

If an AR-15 is so hard to aim and fire then why are you trying to ban them, Mr. Biden? And good luck using a double-barreled shotgun against multiple home invaders. Great idea: use 1800s technology against attackers with modern semi-autos. The last 100 years in America has seen massive curtailments of our civil liberties: interment of German- and Japanese-Americans; use of federal troops against striking workers; the Espionage Act; the Red scare; the Patriot Act; NDAA etc. The UK has no guns AND they're living in a police state. That is not a coincidence.

Yes, by all means, don't buy an AR15, buy a shotgun.. because shotguns are used in more homicides than AR15s.. wait.. um.. I meant to say.. all rifles.. er.. I mean several times more often than AR15s.. Did I mentioned how many shotguns showed up at active shootings? I mean, look it up.. AR15s show up at way fewer active shootings. So, thanks Biden for that nonsense.

Tanks and F-15s, Mr. Biden? Why resort to the hyperbole?

DHS just purchased 7000 'Personal Defense Weapons'. I submit that if they're good enough for DHS to use for Personal Defense, they're good enough for me to use.

Biden says "just get a double barrel shotgun". i understand what he means when someone tries a home invasion. But what happens when there's martial law or worse civil war. We have a right to a militia and that militia shouldn't be armed with double barrel shotguns but with weapons that can match others whether it be our own army or another civil army. most likely we will be outgunned because of at-4 and such..just my opinion on the reason we have the right to bare arms, not Biden's double barrel skeet gun. which he said is more accurate. ask any soldier they know their ar-15 is more accurate. Hidden agenda are here. sic semper tyrannis

This article just goes to show how absolutely ignorant Joe Biden is with regards to guns. A shotgun and an AR-15 are two totally different guns used in two totally different capacities. Yes, either could be used for home defense, but a handgun is much more the gun of choice for that purpose. AR-15's are fun to shoot and can be used at long range for varmint hunting. You CANNOT use a shotgun in the same capacity. A shotgun is great for bird hunting or with the use of a slug it is great for deer hunting. It has limited range, a larger recoil (kick for folks like Joe Biden), and to be honest it simply isn't as fun to shoot, in my opinion, at the range. Why should someone like Crazy Joe Biden who shoots his mouth off more than any other politician in Washington, be allowed to tell me what I should and should not be able to do? I think Joe needs to worry more about the misfires from his own pie hole and less about others person hobbies.

If Dick Chaney has taught us anything, it is that Vice Presidents should not be giving any advice about firearms and should certainly not be going near a shotgun.

Moronic. Obviously, B Hussein O gets the lion's share of the advisory and PR money for this administration (not to say he shouldn't). So we should put our guns on the second shelf next to the cookies, and stand on our balconies aimlessly shooting shotguns for the noise effect? Seriously? No wonder our country is in such a state of disrepair. Look at our "leader's" advice, to parents. They shouldn't let this one out to speak even if it's only when the other one's out playing with a cheating, lying philanderer.

No Joe you are wrong AGAIN and as usuall. The Constitution limits GOVERNMENT not citizens and the Second Amendment does not GIVE individuals the right to bear arms it prevents GOVERNMENT from ANY and ALL infringements on the individuals right to bear arms, and yes that means whatever arms the individual is able to obtain within his ability
    .

Classic Biden....which would be funny if he were not a "heartbeat from the Presidency" as they say. Best insurance policy Obama could have received. If you think Obama is bad....just say President Biden in your head....SCARY!
