Spending cuts: What you need to know

New York (CNNMoney) – The budgets of most federal government programs and agencies will shrink on March 1.

Congress could prevent that from happening, but it's not likely to do so before the deadline.

New Bowles-Simpson deficit plan would cut $2.4 trillion

New York (CNNMoney) – Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson proposed a new framework Tuesday to cut the country's debt by $2.4 trillion over the next decade.

Bowles and Simpson were the co-chairmen of President Obama's bipartisan fiscal commission in 2010, and their recommendations came to serve as a yardstick for other debt-reduction proposals.

House Democratic campaign raises more than $6 million in January

(CNN) - They've set their eyes on winning back control of the U.S. House next year, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee says it started off this year by bringing in cash and reducing debt.

The committee raised $6.1 million in January, a DCCC aide told CNN. That means they have $4.6 million in the bank, but $12.6 million in outstanding debt.
